I believe that nobody ever stops being a student when it comes to witchcraft, as there's always more to learn. That being said, I'm primarily a green witch that has some hedge witch inclinations, but I'll dip my toes into any area, really, if I think it will fit my practice. My main focuses are spellwork, divination, and plant knowledge, though I am always working to expand my knowledge into other areas.

Book Rec - Land Healing by Dana O'Driscoll
For anyone looking to cultivate a deeper relationship with their local land spirits or to engage in more active stewardship of their local biome, I'd like to recommend Land Healing by Dana O'Driscoll.
A follow-up to her other fabulous book, Sacred Actions, Land Healing is a comprehensive guide to land healing for neopagans and earth-based spiritual practitioners who have a desire to regenerate and heal human-caused damage throughout our world. The book presents tools and information to take up the path of the land healer with care, reverence, and respect for all beings. This book also puts tools in your hands to be an active force of good and learn how to actively regenerate the land, preserve life, and create sanctuaries for life–in your backyard, in your community, and beyond.
Dana O’Driscoll has been an animist, and bioregional druid for 20 years and currently serves as the Grand Archdruid in the Ancient Order of Druids in America. She is also a druid-grade member of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids and is OBOD’s 2018 Mount Hameus Scholar. Dana took up the path of land healing because of the deep need in her home region of Western Pennsylvania, which is challenged by fracking, acid mine drainage into streams, logging, and mountaintop removal. Dana sees land healing as her core personal spiritual path, and has done both individual work in her home region as well as spearheading larger-scale land healing efforts at druid events and through the Ancient Order of Druids in America. Dana is a certified permaculture designer and permaculture teacher who teaches sustainable living and wild food foraging. She lives on a 5-acre homestead with her partner and a host of feathered and furred friends.
You can find out more about her practices and her publications by visiting The Druid's Garden and you can also hear more on this recent episode of Hex Positive, where Dana talks about her newest book and the inspiration behind it.

Book Review
Title: Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs
Author: Scott Cunningham
Genre/Type: Herbal Magic, Reference
My Personal Thoughts: This book is more of a reference book than a usual book on witchcraft, however I think it is a very good book for beginners and have been using my own copy as a reference for years. The information is a little outdated, and there are places where it is outright incorrect, but I have found in my own experience that correcting those small bits of misinformation with other resources is easier to do than finding another reference book that is as detailed as this one is. The book has sketches of most of the plants discussed, and goes over a variety of correspondences as well as a few examples of what they can be used for.
Technical: Based on Cunningham's own background as a Wiccan, the book does cater to that tradition, though he seems to have made an effort for the book itself to be fairly neutral even if some of that influence shines through in places. The book is well organized by the common name of plants, and it has multiple indexes in the back that group plants by their uses, elemental correspondences, etc for easy reference when planning to use the book more practically. It has an extensive bibliography and was well-researched, and I genuinely think it's one of the best reference books out there for using plants in witchcraft.
Overall Rating: 4/5

I've had this conversation on the topic before, but not on this platform, so I'll say it here too. Maybe this is a controversial take, but genuinely I think a decent chunk of the reason witchblr has gone... stagnant? downhill? in the last few years is truly laziness. If someone is capable (this is Tumblr, so again, CAPABLE not unable for various reasons) to dig deeper and do the research, then I personally think it's beneficial to.
When I share pages from my grimoire on correspondences, the reason I go into the history, biology, psychology, etc of it all was because I got sick of seeing lists of the same information everywhere and no explanations about why those lists existed. It can be a long process to do the work to understand those whys. It can be hard work to do the research and practice to get answers. It can be frustrating to run into dead ends and fact check all the time.
But the results are a much deeper understanding of witchcraft and the connections between things than a simple list would give you - and that's why it's worth it. Not to say lists are bad as a quick reference, I just think people need to move beyond those relatively quickly to get to the meat of what witchcraft really looks like and means. I don't understand people who are fully capable of being a witch with all that entails, and they just simply... choose the shallowest option and do no more digging.
Those appropriative practices stem from larger issues that should definitely be addressed, but I think part of how they end up being so popular is that enough people are lazy enough to question nothing about their practice or the origins of things.
And I don't mean that in a way where "everyone is awful always if they do this", but in a "hey, please look at this/your practice and question the things you're told" kind of way. It's not a bad thing to be misinformed, but it becomes one when someone intentionally refuses to learn.
Witchblr: Remember that African Diasporic and Latin American spiritual practices are closed!
Also Witchblr:
*regularly appropriates limpia con huevo*
*regularly appropriates copal*
*regularly appropriates John the Conqueror root*
*regularly appropriates African Diasporic and Latin American spiritual oils (many of which are tied to very specific plants native to Latin America and/or the Caribbean your average Tumblr witch or pagan has literally never even heard of)*
*regularly appropriates Florida Water*
*regularly appropriates cascarilla*

Witch's Runes
The Witch's Runes are a set of 13 pictographic runes. They are cast similarly in fashion to Futhark runes and interpreted using one's intuition.
To use Witch's Runes for divination, form a question in your mind and push that thoughtform into your runes. When this is complete, cast them all at once, like dice. Only the face up runes are relevant to the reading, disregard any that fall face down. The most significant rune in the reading is the one furthest from you. If all the runes are face down, you aren't yet meant to know the answer (if this happens don't attempt another reading for at least a week). You can also seek general guidance by drawing a single rune.

You can write down as many correspondences as you want, memorize entire lists from someone else's blog or book or whatever, but none of it will matter if you do not understand those correspondences. It's so critically important to ask "Why?"
Why is spirit purple? Why is love red? Why is chamomile calm? Why is quartz "all purpose"? Why does cinnamon speed up a spell?
Why, why, why?
What do you actually believe? And why?
#this is part of why I started my Color Magic series#and my Overview of Plants series#early on I got tired of seeing lists all the time with no explanations#so I found the explanations myself and eventually decided to share them here too#in case they were useful

Color Magic: Green
Below I have included a list of correspondences, the history of the color, the biology and psychology of the color, and the magical uses it has. Enjoy!
Correspondences
Associations: Abundance, luck, money, success, greed, jealousy, ambition, fertility, health, growth, rebirth, hope
Element: Earth
Planet: Jupiter and Earth
Direction: North
Season: Winter and Spring
Day: Friday
In Tarot: Pentacles
Jupiter is associated with green because astrologically, it is the planet of abundance, and I personally also associate the planet Earth with green as well, even though Earth is not really a part of astrology for obvious reasons. North is associated with green because that is the direction where most earth is. Winter is the more traditional seasonal correspondence for green, because when nature is resting, what remains is the earth, however, I also believe that spring is a correspondence for green as well due to it being the return of plantlife. Pentacles is also the tarot suit of green, due to it being the suit of earth and also of material wealth/goods.
History
The color green has been alongside us since humanity’s beginning, due to it being commonly found in nature. As a pigment for human use, it started in ancient Egypt by using copper to make a green that eventually faded to black. In ancient Rome, they figured out how to use copper and wine to make the pigment verdigris, and this technique was used all the way through medieval times to color a variety of things.
In Renaissance times, green was usually only worn by those who worked with money - merchants, bankers, etc. They also figured out how to make more green pigments, but those tended to fade over time. In the 1700s, it was discovered that the toxic substance arsenite could be used to make a poisonous looking green that many people used in clothing and toys despite the health effects it caused. A different shade using a variation of arsenite also became highly popular despite causing similar health effects, until it was banned in the mid-1900s. Most modern pigments are made using variations of chlorine, but green is still a difficult color to make safely to this day in a way where it doesn’t fade.
Green has a long history of being connected to wealth, rebirth, nature, and even danger. Whether it be through religion, culture, or something else entirely, green has followed humanity for years, and will likely continue to do so even if that connection gains new layers.
Psychology and Biology
The primary known effect of the color green is that it is a relaxing color for our bodies. Muscles have been shown to relax, and breathing tends to be slower and deeper when people are exposed to the color green. It has also been known to slow the heartrate to a calmer level, and has been shown to boost recovery times after medical procedures due to its positive effects on the body. Because of its relaxing effect on the body, sleep can also sometimes be improved through exposure to the color.
Psychologically, green has been shown to create feelings of comfort, calm, and relaxation in most cases. Psychologists believe this is due to how green the natural world is, however they have also noted that certain shades have an opposite effect on people. Darker and greyer shades seem to remind people of death and decay, creating discomfort in those exposed to the shades. Generally though, green has been shown to create more positive feelings in those exposed to it.
Magical Uses
Green is frequently used in witchcraft for money spells, fertility spells, and luck spells. It can also be used in earth magic, or for use in health magic or creating less stress in a witch’s life. Aside from money, it can also be used in spells to draw in abundance in a more general sense as well. As with most color magic, there is not a real limit to the ways that color magic can be added to other magic, so when using green as a component in a spell, there is no strict limit to what can be done with it.

Types of Ancestors
We're approaching Samhain so a good time to resurface this one because every year people ask - but what if my ancestors were terrible people?
So a quick rundown of other types of ancestors that we can work with. (The terms aren't mine but rather used in the community. They should help if you want to find more info on a specific type to work with.)
Ancestors of Flesh and Blood are biological ancestors (shared DNA)
Ancestors of Milk and Honey are those who nourish us (adoptive ancestors)
Ancestors of Bone are the ancestors of the land (bones of the earth connection)
Ancestors of Breath and Bread are those we share a vocation, craft or interest with.
Ancestors of Spirit and Soul are those who we share a spiritual path with.

What Native people say about the use of sage: you can use sage, but you cannot smudge as nothing you are doing (waving sage around) is actually smudging. Smudging is a ceremony and you are, we promise, not smudging. Please buy sage from either us, or someone who sources the sage from us. White sage may not be considered endangered by the US government but corperate sourcing is making it difficult for us to source sage for our own religious purposes. Let alone to sell it.
What white people hear: never use sage ever, don’t ever buy it, don’t own it, don’t even look at it.
Look, y’all. There’s a couple of facets to my talk today.
1) Yes! You can buy sage! You really, truly can! Buy it from either native sellers (go to a powwow! Eat our food, buy our stuff, watch some dancing!) Or buy it from a seller who sources the sage from native people. Pick one. And no, buying it from 5 Below doesn’t count.
2) you CANNOT smudge. This isn’t just you “shouldn’t”— this is a YOU ARE INCAPABLE OF SMUDGING. Waving a sage stick around your doorways IS NOT SMUDGING. It is smoke clensing. Smudging, depending on the tradition and tribe, could easily have dancing and drums involved. You, as a white person, do not have the cultural BACKGROUND to even know how it works. At all. Period.
3) please, for FUCKS SAKE, stop making posts here on tumblr where you tell other white people about cultural appropriation and what they can and cannot do. Please stop, your license has been revoked because none of you bother to get the facts right. We native people are FULLY CAPABLE OF DOING IT OURSELVES. Consider instead: a) reblogging our posts where we talk about it! We’re here! We have made posts!! b) Making a post that states what we said and then LINKS BACK TO US. Screenshot with a link if you must. Stop centering your own voices in these conversations. You are already centered in everything, stop centering yourselves in a native space.
I’m tired of this nonsense, y’all.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk ™
