Shoutout to interdisciplinary conversations and collaborations!! Let’s keep having them 🙌
I saw a very good post on why learning literature is important and not at all about "oh the curtains are blue because the character feels sad" and it made me think about math. I didnt want to hijack that post bc it delves on racism and I dont want to speak over them on that.
But
Math isnt about if you can add 674 to 734 very quickly. It isnt about if you can find the x on an equation or if you know what the sin of an angle at a triangle is. Math is about logic. When you learn to look at geometrical problems and its ridiculous angles and sines and all that shit what you actually should be learning is how to interpret a problem. How to look at a situation and understand its roots and understand how that helps you solve your original question.
Not learning basic math is a cute meme, but the consequences are the avalanche of fake information and pseudoscience we have now. The anti vax movement is a great example of a group that just fails to see the roots of an issue, that lack the logical skill to see the faults in their speech. Their hatred against autistic people is fed by that lack of logical linear thought. Its very easy to forget how to argument when you're angry and bitter.
It's a dangerous combination
That's why fake news spread like wildfire even if they are bananas. Because if you don't train your brain to understand logic puzzles you dont use it on other situations.
Of course math isnt the ONLY SUBJETCT WITH LOGIC OWO. That would be stupid to say. But the fact is that is a very direct way to aproach logic that we usually neglect bc its thought to us that all it matters is that you can find x by the end of the day. Especially because our educational system is super kin on pretending humanities and stem dont interlapse. Like if you enjoy history or physolophy or arts you cant enjoy math and physics and chemistry. Like there isnt logic in history and philosophy in science.
This separation is on purpose. Logic in and of itself means nothing if you don't know the historical settings on where to apply it. If you cant do both they can control you.
