one of the most painful but necessary bits of the later seasons of black sails is how eleanor loses all her power after she marries rogers. before, she had this sort of masculine position in which she had real personal power. she had, first and foremost, money and property that weren’t technically hers, but which she could use at her discretion. after she gets captured and marries rogers, all her power comes from him. she never learned to be like max, whose power comes from her ability to make herself necessary and respected. eleanor is still used to using the kind of power she had before, and once she doesn’t, she’s forced to resort to begging rogers and max and berringer to please be reasonable, please listen, and she’s trying so hard to be respectable and reformed and it turns on her in all the worst ways. when the mask slips, when she curses in front of her husband’s soldiers, when she and max review their shared history - when she reminds everyone who she once was- those are the only times she seems to have even a shadow of her former power. she gets to live, but at the cost of her freedom.
