Mikulas Party (St. Nicholas)
Tumblr media
In Hungary, December 6th is celebrated as Mikulás Nap or St. Nicholas Day. This tradition is rooted in the Christian feast day of St. Nicholas, who was a Christian bishop known for his generosity and kindness. According to the tradition, St. Nicholas visits homes on the night of December 5th, leaving small gifts, sweets, or treats in the shoes of well-behaved children. Children typically clean and polish their shoes the night before, placing them by the windowsill or the door. In the morning of December 6th, they wake up to find small gifts or candies left by Mikulás (St. Nicholas).
In Elte TÖK we were so lucky we had an amazing party with traditional hungarian dances, instruments, and cookies. It's was a pleasure to a be part of it!

The Scavenger Hunt
A scavenger hunt is a game where participants are given a list of items to find within a specified area. They often work individually or in teams, and the goal is to locate all the items on the list. Sometimes, clues or riddles lead participants to each item or task location. It's a fun way to encourage problem-solving, teamwork, and exploration!. Here are some pictures I took while finding the spots and discovering Deak Ferenc.

“Fi-de-di, de-dah-doo, dah-de da-do Fi-de-do, de-da-dee, de-da-day I will sing all the while ‘neath the sunshine! ‘Neath the moon, I will dance, I will play!”
In the autumn the ants were still working But the grasshopper still did not care The ants asked “Why don’t you store food for winter?” “When it’s cold, you’ll have no food to spare.”
“Fi-de-di, de-dah-doo, dah-de da-do Fi-de-do, de-da-dee, de-da-day ‘Bove us all, there will always be sunshine And there always will be time to play!”
Time went by, and along came the winter And the wind gave a cold icy chill Snow fell down, and there was no more sunshine So the grasshopper went up the hill.
“Fi-de-di, de-dah-doo, dah-de da-do Fi-de-do, de-da-dee, de-da-day I am cold, I am wet, I am hungry And I’m sorry I played the days away.”
In the valley he went to the anthill He was cold, and embarrassed, and sad But the ants told him that he was welcome Then he thanked them and felt really glad!

Is learning through playing relevant in the development of the children?
As I child, I remember i really enjoyed playing games in class, sometimes it was due to free time but other times games where incorporated in the lessons. There were years in which school just seemed like something I must do, as I didn't enjoy the process, but there were some others years, in which playing was highly involved, that I really enjoyed and I have good memories about them. In those years I was motivated to go to class, not only to see my friends, but also because I was excited as to what were we going to learn that day and how. Basically, I was looking forward to it, and I think as teachers this is a very valuable lesson. To make the learning process enjoyable. And that's why I read an article to dig into the concept of playing a little further. I would like to share the highlights of said article, in accordance to the question "is learning through playing relevant in the development of the children?"
Tumblr media
Well, first of all, if we want to apply a meaninful playing we have to take a few things into account. Children should be given a choice about what to play, and for me, this means that we should take into account what they like or how do they like to play and incorporate it into our classes. This type of play feels fun and enjoyable for the child and is driven by intrinsic motivation. The final tip is to create a risk-free enviroment in which kids can experiment and try new ideas.
Of course we can use guided play but we need to remember that the students are the active participants. Playing is essential because through this students get to know the world around them by comparing physical experiences, and themselves and others by their own interactions and feelings. The aim is to give kids the opportunities to wonder, question, work as a team, and experiment maximazing learning through play. So, to sum up it incorporates multiple aspects of learning and development, promoting skills such as language, critical thinking, teamwork, and cooperation.

Goodbyes
Tumblr media
The end of the day in any early childhood classroom can quickly become chaotic. That is why it is important to incorporate goodbyes to our routine, as they usually have a calming effect on kids.
Here are a few good examples of ways of greeting which I like (click on the name to watch the videos):
Listening to a short storie with life-lesson: these stories provide an engaging and relatable way to impart important values and moral lessons. Through narrative scenarios, students can learn about empathy, kindness, perseverance, and other virtues in a context that is accessible and enjoyable. Short stories also enhance language development, vocabulary, and comprehension skills as students listen to and discuss the narrative. Furthermore, these stories often feature relatable characters and situations, making it easier for young learners to connect the moral lessons to their own lives.
Relaxation with story: This relaxation meditation helps students to cope with waves of big emotions hit through deep breathing and yoga inspired stretching. This one in specific is called called "Sloth Breaths" and it takes place in a rainforest where they take a flower a sniff it thus to help the inhale - exhale proccedure. But we can do a brief meditation with or without stretching of various topics, in which students find their happy place, let it loose and relax.
Goodbye song: It can be effective to use a song which incorporates some movements to conclude the class. In my opinion, as teachers we should to make our students leave the class with a fullfilment and happy sensation, and we know most of the children love a good song. By incorporating movements we can also help them release strenght.
Afirmation song: Using an affirmation song to conclude a class is beneficial for students' self-development. The rhythmic and repetitive nature of affirmations in song form can help internalize constructive beliefs, promoting a positive mindset and resilience. By using this students are reminded of their capabilities and strengths, contributing to the development of a positive self-image, thus encouraging emotional well-being.

Greetings
Tumblr media
When we start a class, we want our students to warm up and to catch their attention. Doing a greeting sets a positive tone, and allows the student to transition into the school enviroment. It is also very important understand how the children are feeling and to talk with them about how their day / weekend was, but I will do another post for that called Spanish methodology: The children assembly.
Here are a few good examples of ways of greeting which I like (click on the name to watch the videos)
Spreading love good morning poster : Students start they day by choosing between a variety of fun greetings to say good morning to the teacher, so this method encourages positive interactions. It can be a fist bump, a little dance, a hug, a handshake... basically what ever variation you come up with. In my opinion it would be interesting first to do ir yourself as a teacher but then also letting the students be the ones who greet their other classmates if they want to.
Warm up names and dance movements: With this warm up students have to tell their names and make up a dance movement to do while their say their name. I think this activity is specially good at the start of the course, when students don' t really know each other. It can be a great way to introduce themselves. I also found interesting how the leader of this activity starts by shaking different parts of the body, in my opinion this is an interesting icebreaker to release tension and start the warm up.
Hello, who are you?: This one is a greeting I've done in class and it consists of walking around the class imitating whatever you feel like been and saying hello to everyone. Once you have done that you can do another round including now a variation in which you start by doing what you were in the round before, but then, when you start walking around the class you have to copy the moves of somebody else.
Using a good morning / welcome song: I consider that the rhythmic and melodic elements of a song can enhance children's mood, making them feel welcomed and excited to participate in classroom activities. Additionally, these musical greetings promote a sense of community and shared experience, fostering social bonds among students and creating a supportive atmosphere conducive to effective learning and emotional well-being.
