a deacon once told me that herodias, salome’s mother, was the only woman named in mark’s gospel until the resurrection (besides mary). herodias made salome dance for the head of john the baptist (seen at her feet in the painting). mark purposefully names herodias to highlight the evil of her actions: she forced her—child—daughter to dance sexually for her stepfather, herod, in order for herod to kill john the baptist
