Keen to learn – A 11-year-old migrant boy topping Coding classes
Harsh, a 11-year-old migrant boy from Bihar came to Literacy India to learn coding, but unfortunately all the seats were taken by then.
The facilitators always support children, and seldom refuse anyone. However, this time all the seats were taken, and since a lot of focus is on individual learning – the facilitators hesitated as they wanted to make sure all students receive the necessary attention, including Harsh. Harsh was one keen student, and his persistence to join the course compelled the facilitators to include him in the ongoing batch, even though seats were taken.
Harsh is especially gifted in science, and decent in other subjects. He started to enjoy the coding classes by code.org immediately, being one of the first ones to complete the coding projects. Since then, he has always topped the class. The child’s determination and the facilitator’s sense of direction has secured the future of this bright student, true to Literacy India’s mission.
“Harsh loves science, and we made the decision to move to Delhi to help our children get proper education. We always support them to do their best and fuel their curiosity.
Now he is very interested in coding and is excited about his projects and often talks about them. “I’m happy to see my son happy. A big thanks to Literacy India for providing such a good platform to our kids,” said Pankaj Mishra, Harsh’s father.

Rajvi’s journey to academic excellence with Gyantantra Digital learning
Rajvi, a fifth-grade government school student, comes from a modest background with her father working as a self-employed carpenter, and her mother taking care of household responsibilities. Rajvi has two siblings, and her family’s monthly income fluctuates and is roughly around 10,000 rupees in a month. Despite the financial challenges, Rajvi’s parents are supportive of her education.
Rajvi’s journey at Gyantantra began when she, along with her older brother, sought admission. The initial days were promising as Rajvi displayed enthusiasm and diligence in her studies. However, her sudden disappearance from the learning center raised concerns. Our team at the centre reached out to Rajvi’s family and followed-up with them. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Rajvi’s family faced housing issues due to a sudden eviction by their landlord. The landlord’s decision was influenced by the controversial situation surrounding Muslim communities in Delhi. With the hope of seeking safety and comfort, Rajvi’s family decided to return to their village in Bihar for a brief period. The family eventually moved to another accommodation in Chhawla, and Rajvi resumed attending the learning center regularly.
Rajvi’s pre-test scores were below average. She scored an aggregate of 21 out of 100. Her value education and environmental studies scores were also low. Despite her academic challenges, Rajvi’s remained resolute and her teachers noted her proactive approach to completing tasks ahead of schedule, reflecting her determination and efficiency. Her mid-test results demonstrated substantial growth. She scored 79%, showing her commitment to daily learning, consistent effort and hard work.
Gyantantra’s digital and interactive mode of learning helped enhance Rajvi’s academic development. The incorporation of technology provided Rajvi with the opportunity to access educational resources beyond traditional classroom settings. This flexibility allowed her to continue her studies even during the challenging period when her family faced housing issues. Interactive learning tools and resources offered by Gyantantra engaged Rajvi in a more dynamic manner. The use of multimedia, educational games, and interactive lessons made the learning experience enjoyable. This approach not only captured her interest but also facilitated a deeper understanding of challenging topics.
Rajvi’s educational journey reflects perseverance and determination. Despite facing external challenges, she has shown commendable improvement and a commitment to her studies.

Within Every Challenge lies an Opportunity for Growth
In the heart of Mohammadpur, Delhi, where hope is as vital as the air we breathe, there lies a beacon of opportunity — the Mohammadpur Community Center. Here, amidst the bustling streets and daily struggles, individuals find not just solace, but a platform for transformation. It is a place where stories of resilience, determination, and empowerment unfold daily, each narrative echoing the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. Within these walls, Neha and Harshita found not just refuge, but a pathway to reshape their destinies. Their journeys, marked by hardship, loss, and uncertainty, stand as testimony to the power of community support and skill empowerment. Through their perseverance, they emerged as symbols of hope, proving that with the right guidance and determination, one can overcome any obstacle. Neha’s story exemplifies the strength born from adversity, as she defied societal norms and financial constraints to carve a path towards independence. Meanwhile, Harshita’s journey showcases the transformative impact of skill training, illuminating the way towards a brighter future despite the darkest of circumstances. These tales remind us that within every challenge lies an opportunity for growth, and within every setback, the seeds of triumph are sown.
Neha’s journey at the Mohammadpur Community Center is a story of determination against odds. With the responsibility of supporting her family, including a brother and two sisters, Neha faced early marriage immediately after completing her 12th grade. Post-marriage, financial pressures intensified as she grappled with her husband’s limited income. Seeking to contribute to her family’s financial stability, Neha approached our community center. After counseling, she enrolled in the Front Office Skill Training program. This 3-month course provided her with comprehensive skills in front desk management, customer service, and administrative duties, equipping her for the professional world. Upon completion, with our support, Neha secured employment as a Front Desk Executive at the Step edge outlet in Palam, Delhi. Her role involves managing the billing counter, where she excels, earning a monthly salary of 13,000 rupees. This job has not only improved her family’s financial situation but also marked Neha as an example of empowerment through skill development. Neha reflects, “The training gave me more than skills; it gave me a sense of self-worth and independence.” Her story is a powerful example of how skill training and personal determination can facilitate breaking barriers and transforming lives.
Before joining the Mohammadpur Community Center, Harshita faced a life-altering challenge. The loss of her parents to the COVID pandemic left her and her brother in the care of their aunt, struggling without proper guidance and support. The turning point came when our coordinator identified her need and guided her towards our skill training programs. Harshita chose the Beauty Wellness Training Course, a comprehensive 3-month certificate program that promised a new beginning. Despite initial hesitations due to travel issues, her understanding of the program’s potential benefits led her to commit wholeheartedly. The course covered various beauty techniques and customer service skills, taught by experienced professionals. Harshita’s dedication was evident as she attended classes regularly, eagerly absorbing knowledge and skills. Her transformation during the program was remarkable. Not only did Harshita acquire technical skills, but she also developed confidence and a vision for her future. “This training has opened new doors for me. I see a path to support my brother and help my aunt,” Harshita shared. Her goal is clear — to achieve financial independence and ensure her brother’s education. Harshita’s story is a testament to how targeted skill training can empower individuals, change trajectories, and foster self-sufficiency.

Transforming Challenges into Opportunities for Visually Impaired Youth
Over the last 3 decades, Literacy India has remained committed to transforming the lives of underserved children and underprivileged women through quality education and skill training. This journey towards self-reliance and empowerment is built upon the robust pillars of Education, Empowerment, Employability, and Environment. Their innovative approach extends to nurturing a culture of environmental responsibility among those who have been educated, employed, and empowered. The educational methods are dynamic and interactive, encompassing workshops, theatre, dance, and group learning, effectively steering clear of traditional rote learning techniques.
For several years now, Literacy India has made strides in championing social inclusion and financial independence for the transgender community. Offering an entire spectrum of services such as placements, skilling, communication training, profile building, etiquette, and grooming, all at no cost, Literacy India stands as a pillar of support for the transgender community.
Literacy India believes that inclusivity isn’t just a virtue; it’s the cornerstone of a thriving society. Embracing diversity, irrespective of abilities or backgrounds, fuels innovation, fosters understanding, and paves the way for a harmonious world where every voice is heard, and every individual is valued. This commitment to inclusivity is further evident in its involvement with the visually impaired youth in their Call Centre Lab, a groundbreaking initiative that exemplifies the shift from social exclusion to an inclusive framework.
Despite Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) making up 7–8% of India’s population, their representation in the workforce is less than 1%, a gap Literacy India is determined to bridge. By debunking myths about the employability of PwDs and showcasing the benefits of a diverse workforce, Literacy India aims to encourage companies to embrace inclusivity, resulting in reduced staff turnover, higher customer satisfaction, and a more sensitized organizational culture. This holistic approach requires collaboration from companies, government, like minded non-profits, and individuals, involving workplace modifications, training process adjustments, and societal sensitization.
Introduction:
Literacy India Call Centre Lab is an innovative initiative designed to address the significant challenges faced by visually impaired youth in securing employment in the customer service sector. Recognizing the lack of accessible workplaces and the need for inclusive employment opportunities, Literacy India Call Centre Lab offers a specialized solution to bridge this gap.
The Problem:
Visually impaired individuals often encounter significant barriers in the job market, especially in fields requiring extensive use of computer systems, such as call Centres. This lack of accessibility in workplace technology has contributed to a high unemployment rate among visually impaired youth, leaving a vast potential workforce untapped.
The Magnitude of the Problem:
Millions of visually impaired individuals struggle to find employment due to these accessibility challenges. In many regions, the visually impaired youth unemployment rate is significantly higher than the national average, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue.
Our Solution:
Literacy India has adopted NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access), a free, open-source screen reader, to empower the visually impaired. This tool aligns with their mission to provide equal technology access, crucial in regions with limited resources.
Easy to install and user-friendly, NVDA offers a seamless experience, essential for those new to screen readers. Its portability allows use on multiple computers, ideal for educational and workplace environments. Supporting various languages, NVDA caters to a diverse user base, including minority language speakers.
As an open-source project, NVDA benefits from ongoing improvements by a community-driven development process. This aligns with Literacy India’s commitment to community involvement and empowerment.
The solution’s impact is significant, enabling education, employment, and independence in daily tasks. It’s a key tool in Literacy India’s efforts to enhance access to technology, driving change towards a more inclusive and equitable digital world.
Further, Literacy India Call Centre Lab has developed a comprehensive call Centre solution tailored to the needs of visually impaired individuals. Key aspects of our solution include:
– Voice modulation training typically includes exercises that help in understanding the nuances of voice projection, clarity, and enunciation. Participants learn how to emphasize key points and how to adjust their speaking style according to the context of the conversation or the customer’s mood and needs.
For the visually impaired, training also includes developing heightened listening skills to compensate for the lack of visual cues. This helps them better understand a caller’s tone, mood, and intent, allowing for more effective and empathetic responses.
Additionally, stress management and breathing techniques are a part of the training. These techniques help maintain vocal health, a critical aspect for professionals who rely heavily on their voice.
Voice modulation training for visually impaired individuals in call centres is not just about developing effective communication skills; it’s also about boosting confidence. Being able to communicate effectively is empowering and plays a significant role in the successful integration of visually impaired individuals into the call centre workforce.
– User-Friendly Interface with complete keyboard navigation with shortcut keys, simplifying operation and reducing complexity.
– Cloud-Based Accessibility for remote access capabilities, allowing visually impaired youth to work from home or any location with internet access.
– Quality Management Tools like screen and call recording for effective supervision and support of remote agents.
Implementation and Impact:
Currently implemented in Jaipur, Literacy India Call Centre Lab aims to expand its reach, targeting to impact thousands of visually impaired youth. By providing them with the necessary tools and training, we are enabling them to enter the workforce and become self-sufficient.
Sustainability of the Model:
The sustainability of the Literacy India Call Centre Lab model lies in its ability to fulfil the dual objectives of corporate social responsibility and business efficiency. Organisations partnering with us benefit from tapping into a skilled, yet previously overlooked, workforce, while contributing positively to social inclusion. The revenue generated through our services is reinvested in training more visually impaired individuals, ensuring the longevity and growth of the initiative.
Literacy India Call Centre Lab is more than just a workplace; it’s a movement towards creating inclusive employment opportunities for visually impaired youth. By turning challenges into opportunities, we are not only empowering individuals but also enriching the customer service industry with untapped talent.
“Presently, the BPO industry stands as a significant employer, and we foresee a substantial increase in employment numbers by the end of this decade,” remarks Capt. Indraani Singh from Literacy India. “This growth presents immense opportunities, especially for the visually impaired youth of India, not only offering them employment prospects but also a platform for skill enhancement and valuable work experience. Importantly, their active participation and inclusion in the workforce is vital for their personal growth and for contributing to the country’s economic development. It plays a crucial role in fostering an inclusive work environment, underscoring our conscious aim of promoting inclusiveness in society.”
