I do my best to bring the character(s) I love to life, I tend to stick to canon as much as I possibly can, that being said, I will be sticking to the portrayal of Anne that SURANNE JONES brings to life in the HBO/ BBC series, GENTLEMAN JACK. There will be very small nods to MAXINE PEAKE'S portrayal of Anne in THE SECRET DIARIES OF MISS ANNE LISTER (2010). ⟢ HISTORY. As you may or may not know, Anne Lister was a real person, she existed from 1791 to 1840. She was a diarist, a landowner, and a business woman, but most importantly, she's dubbed 'the first modern lesbian'. "Anne was known in her time for dressing always in black, without bothering to indulge in the feminine frills like the others of her sex. She was the 19th century equivalent of a “butch” lesbian, and she became known to locals as ‘Gentleman Jack.’ Her lesbian lifestyle, however, was one of the best kept secrets of her time." [annelister.co.uk] Within the pages of her diary Anne wrote about her day to day life in great mundane detail, however, the code in which she created to hide her lesbian lifestyle was the COMPLETE opposite. Anne Lister is an unwavering force of confidence with a tender heart that yearns to be loved and accepted in a world that rejects her and singles her out. She is a force that I, and millions of others, are forever inspired by. I wish to do nothing more than to make her existence known as SHE passionately wished for.
