SOLOMON JOSEPH SOLOMON - AJAX AND CASSANDRA, 1886
The painting shows an intense scene in the Trojan War where Ajax the Lesser abducts Cassandra from the Temple of Athena. In this moment, Ajax commits a brutal act of violence against Cassandra, who is desperately holding onto the statue of Athena as a form of protection
The setting is a dim temple, highlighting the difference between Cassandra's fair skin and Ajax's flushed complexion. Dark backgrounds make their skin tones appear brighter and highlight the vibrant colors of their clothing - Cassandra wearing white and Ajax clad in blood-red. The sense of movement is created by their dynamic poses with flowing draperies and the cauldron falling to the ground.
The god Apollo loved Cassandra and agreed to grant her the ability to foresee the future if she accepted his wishes. Cassandra agreed to the proposal, accepted the gift, but ultimately denied the god her affections. Apollo got back at her by making sure no one believed her predictions. Despite accurately foreseeing events like the fall of Troy, her cautions were ignored. Ajax the Lesser seized Cassandra from the altar of Athena during the fall of Troy and raped her. Athena punished the Greek fleet with a storm for their impiety, causing most of the ships to sink on their way back home.
This painting inspired artists because after seeing Ajax and Cassandra as a young child, Norman Lindsay dedicated his life to painting and became one of Australia's most significant artists. Lindsay's work was extremely scandalous, to the point where American authorities confiscated and burned it as pornography when he sent it to the USA for safekeeping during World War II. His response: “Don’t worry, I’ll do more.”Lindsay recalled that he had “tender memories” of this painting as a young boy.
