Can you ‘drink’ your oats?
Today, I found a new smoothie recipe to try.  I’m going to give you the original recipe and then how I tweaked it to the ingredients that we had at home at the time.
One of the challenges that I really enjoy is finding a new (to me) smoothie recipe and making it fit to the ingredients that we have on hand.
Please remember, if you are just starting out making smoothies, don’t be so concerned right now with the type of blender you have.  Eventually, I would recommend that you look into a Nutribullet, but for now, use what you have.
Now, here is the recipe I found and haven’t ever tried before.
1 cup Spinach or other leafy greens ½ Frozen banana 1 ½ cups Unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or other milk/milk alternative) ¼ cup Oats 1 TBSP Peanut butter (or other nut butter) 1 TBSP Honey 4 Ice cubes
(TBSP = tablespoon)
Basically, I stayed with these ingredients.  I always have frozen one-inch pieces of banana in a gallon sized ziplock bag in the freezer.  We keep baby spinach on hand too.  We have chosen to go with unsweetened original almond milk due to health issues.  The oats that I use are steel cut and we are using almond butter nowadays instead of peanut butter.
So, I used the same amounts in the original recipe and only altered the peanut butter to almond butter and steel cut oats instead of rolled oats.
Someone is probably asking what’s the difference between rolled and steel cut oats?  Rolled oats and steel-cut oats are both popular choices for a hearty breakfast, but they differ in their processing. Rolled oats are steamed, flattened, and dried, resulting in a quicker cooking time and a smoother texture. On the other hand, steel-cut oats are simply chopped into pieces, giving them a heartier, chewier texture and a longer cooking time. Think of rolled oats as the go-to for convenience, while steel-cut oats are the choice for those who prefer a more robust and nutty oatmeal experience.
Hopefully this has been helpful to you for your encouragement to tweak a smoothie recipe even if you may not have all the exact ingredients.

Let’s dive into the wonders of chia seeds and why they deserve a spot in your daily smoothie ritual.
Chia Seeds 101: A Nutrient-Packed Superfood
Derived from the Salvia hispanica plant, chia seeds have been revered for centuries. Despite their minuscule size, chia seeds pack a substantial nutritional punch:
1. Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Chia seeds are an excellent plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids, promoting heart health and reducing inflammation.
2. Fiber-Fueled Goodness: These tiny seeds boast an impressive fiber content, aiding digestion, promoting a feeling of fullness, and supporting a healthy gut.
3. Protein Powerhouse: Chia seeds are a complete protein source, providing all essential amino acids. This makes them an excellent choice for those following vegetarian or vegan diets.
4. Loaded with Antioxidants: Chia seeds are rich in antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress and protect your cells from damage.
5. Bone-Boosting Nutrients: Calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium in chia seeds contribute to bone health, making them a valuable addition, especially for individuals with dairy-free or low-calcium diets.
Chia Seeds Meet Smoothies: A Perfect Harmony
1. Texture Magic: When added to a smoothie, chia seeds absorb liquid and take on a gel-like consistency. This not only adds a delightful texture but also enhances the overall mouthfeel of your drink.
2. Satiety Savior: The high fiber and protein content of chia seeds contribute to a feeling of fullness, making your smoothie a satisfying and nutritious meal or snack.
3. Energy Boost: Chia seeds were historically known as “running food” because of the sustained energy they provide. Including them in your smoothie can give you that extra burst of vitality for a busy day.
4. Omega-3 Infusion: For those looking to increase their omega-3 intake without relying on fish, chia seeds in smoothies offer a convenient and delicious alternative.
5. Customizable Flavors: Chia seeds have a mild, nutty flavor that pairs well with a variety of smoothie ingredients. Whether you’re a fan of tropical fruits, berries, or greens, chia seeds can seamlessly blend into your preferred flavor profile.
Chia Seed Smoothie Hacks
1. Pre-Soak for a Creamier Texture: Soak chia seeds in your liquid of choice for a few minutes before blending to achieve a creamier consistency.
2. Blend or Stir: Depending on your texture preference, you can either blend chia seeds into your smoothie or stir them in afterward for a delightful crunch.
3. Chia Pudding Parfait: Take your smoothie to the next level by layering it with a chia pudding made by soaking chia seeds in your favorite milk.
In conclusion, chia seeds are a nutritional powerhouse that can effortlessly elevate your smoothie experience. From enhanced texture to a nutrient boost, these tiny wonders are a must-try for any smoothie enthusiast. Embrace the goodness of chia and sip your way to a healthier, more vibrant you!

Golden Goodness: The Power of Ground Turmeric in Your Smoothies
Are you a smoothie enthusiast looking to elevate your blend with a dash of health and vibrancy? Look no further than the golden wonder – ground turmeric. This ancient spice, renowned for its earthy flavor and vibrant color, isn't just a culinary delight; it's a nutritional powerhouse that can transform your daily smoothie into a concoction of wellness.
The Golden Touch: Nutritional Benefits of Ground Turmeric
Ground turmeric, derived from the Curcuma longa plant, has been a staple in traditional medicine for centuries. Its active compound, curcumin, is celebrated for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Incorporating ground turmeric into your smoothies introduces a burst of health benefits.
Anti-Inflammatory Marvel: Turmeric's curcumin is a potent anti-inflammatory agent, helping to combat inflammation at the molecular level. This is particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with conditions like arthritis or general joint pain.
Antioxidant Boost: Free radicals, the culprits behind aging and various diseases, meet their match with turmeric. The spice's antioxidant properties neutralize these harmful molecules, promoting overall well-being.
Heart Health Guardian: Turmeric is associated with improved cardiovascular health. It helps lower cholesterol levels, regulate blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Brain Booster: Some studies suggest that curcumin may cross the blood-brain barrier, with potential benefits for brain health. It is believed to boost levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a growth hormone that functions in the brain.
Digestive Harmony: Turmeric has been used to aid digestion for centuries. It stimulates bile production, essential for the breakdown of dietary fats, and can alleviate symptoms of indigestion.
Why Turmeric in Smoothies?
Flavorful Twist: Ground turmeric brings a warm, slightly bitter flavor to your smoothies, complementing the sweetness of fruits and the creaminess of yogurt or plant-based milk.
Vibrant Hue: Who doesn't love a colorful smoothie? The golden hue of turmeric adds visual appeal to your concoction, making it an Instagram-worthy treat.
Easy to Incorporate: A little goes a long way with ground turmeric. A teaspoon or two is sufficient to infuse your smoothie with its goodness. Start with a small amount and adjust to your taste preference.
Versatility: Turmeric pairs well with a variety of smoothie ingredients. Whether you prefer tropical fruits, berries, or green veggies, turmeric can seamlessly enhance the flavor profile.
Post-Workout Recovery: The anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric make it an excellent addition to post-workout smoothies, aiding in muscle recovery and reducing exercise-induced inflammation.
Golden Rule: Tips for Using Turmeric in Smoothies
Pair with Black Pepper: Enhance the bioavailability of curcumin by adding a pinch of black pepper to your smoothie. Piperine, found in black pepper, enhances the absorption of curcumin in the body.
Experiment with Complementary Ingredients: Turmeric plays well with ingredients like ginger, cinnamon, and a touch of honey for a flavor-packed smoothie experience.
Include Healthy Fats: As turmeric is fat-soluble, including ingredients like avocado, chia seeds, or nut butter not only adds creaminess but also aids in the absorption of curcumin.
In conclusion, ground turmeric is a small but mighty addition to your smoothie repertoire. Elevate your daily blend with this golden spice and embark on a journey of flavor and well-being. Cheers to vibrant health and delicious sips!
