Concept Development
Final Folio Task 01 The brief of this task was to create a scene only using paper as the subject and this time I decided to create an abstracted geometric image instead of trying to mimic a real life scenario. I had no real concept for the shoot but I wanted to experiment with gently fold the paper without creasing it to create natural curves whilst still having the hard edge of the piece of paper. The implementation of both a natural curve a sharp geometric shapes excited me and I began to staple paper together to fasten the adjacent sides to make a permanent curve without creasing the paper.

Final Folio Task 01 For his task I was influenced by the photographer Owen Gildersleeve and his simplistic but striking still life images he creates using paper. The delicate yet sharp geometric shapes are exactly what I was trying to achieve in the image I was attempting to create.

Final Folio Task 01 For this task I use an extremely basic one light set up with no reflectors or any thing of that like. This simplicity allowed me to quickly adjust the lights positioning without having to thing of how it was going to affect the other elements of the lighting set up, this allowed me to fine tune the lighting and achieve the striking appearance of the paper.

Lens Choice
Final Folio Task 01 For this task I decided to use a 70-200mm lens with a macro extender attached to allow me to focus closer and compose a much tighter frame with no excessive negative space. This was an interesting task as I hadn't used a macro set up in the studio before which ended up being a very fun challenge. The limitations of using a macro extension tube were fairly apparent as the depth of field is extremely shallow which makes obtaining focus far more difficult. Having the camera in such a close proximity to the subject created challenges too

Final Folio Task 01 For this task the exposure I achieved in camera was fairly average so this particular image needed fairly drastic exposure adjustments.

Reflection and Self Critique
Final Folio Task 01 The outcome of this task was much more polished and refined when compared to that of the initial paper shoot. Choosing to create an abstracted scene was much more achievable with my skill level as I found it challenging to light and edit the initial shot in such a way that removed the paper like qualities from the image. This development in the removal of the paper as the obvious subject matter greatly enhanced the mood and the overall presentation of the image.

Final Folio Task 02 For this task the concept was to create a character portrait in the studio. After a lot of thinking I had the idea of creating an image based upon myself but an exaggerated version. I have an affinity for shooting film and old cameras on a whole and own too many to use regularly. I had the idea of creating a mysterious yet ridiculous looking character wielding an excessive amount of cameras lit in a retro inspired fashion.

Final Folio Task 02 For this shoot I was inspired by the LA based photographer Elena Kulikova again due to her masterful use of coloured lighting in her portraits as well as her masterful post production.

Final Folio Task 02 The lighting set up for this shoot was fairly elaborate as it featured 3 lights and two gels. I initially was going only use one colour in the image but had the idea of experimenting with both a cool and warm gel. After picking the colours I then developed the lighting arrangement and decided in splitting the image with the colours. I wanted to give off the appearance of neon lights from a building so variation in the heigh of the lights was essential. After establishing the initial set up it was decided that a slight fill was needed to to bring back some natural colours so a third light was placed behind the camera with a soft box.

Camera Settings
Final Folio Task 02 For this task fairly rudimentary studio settings were used. The light meter reading for the shadow side of the subjects face was ISO 100 F 4 and a shutter speed of 1/80th of a second where as the highlight side was ISO F 16 and a shutter speed of 1/80th of a second. The final exposure was captured at ISO 100 with an aperture of f8 and a shutter speed of 1/80th of a second.

Lens Choice
Final Folio Task 03 For this task I chose to use a 50mm in order to allow me to move around the studio more freely as I was continuously toying with the subjects orientation and the light placement. This lens proved to be very suitable as the 50mm focal length provides a very balance perspective with little to no distortion depending on the lens.

Final Folio Task 02 For this task I decided on doing a composite image after the initial shoot was completed as during the initial editing process I decided that the image was lacking depth and the introduction of some out of focus city lights would complete the scene. After refining the colour palette and the exposure of the image in Lightroom I took it into photoshop and composited an Image and went and captured of the city from a vantage point in Bardon. I overlaid it multiple times and duplicated the original image whilst messing with the opacity and erasing certain elements to blend the two images and give the appearance that the lights were behind the subject.

Reflection and Self Critique
Final Folio Task 02 The outcome of this shoot was extremely satisfactory and I was somewhat surprised with the quality of the result. I believe that throughout the trimester my use of gels has developed and I’m very happy with the aesthetic I was able to achieve. I have a tendency to not composite images as I’m not overly confident doing it so committing to compositing the image for this task was a good challenge. I feel that the introduction of another prop in the scene could have improved the separation of the image from a studio setting but I believe I was fairly successful in doing so without.

Final Folio Task 03 For this shoot the task was to create a fashion portrait, in the previous task I used a female subject so I decided to choose a male subject to take a different approach. I decided to create a much more stylised portrait this time round and utilise a more developed fashion sense. I wanted to create a fairly high key and intensely coloured image that would really catch the eye of the potential consumer of the product.

Final Folio Task 03 For this shoot I chose to take inspiration form Terry Richardsons simplistic images but wanted to develop the lighting and overall look of the image further. His most recent work for Supreme was probably the most influential out of the work of his that I was looking at during the research process.

Final Folio Task 03 I decided to utilise the book end lighting set up again as I was very pleased by the qualities of the lighting in the previous shoot but I felt that I could refine it more after a second attempt. Using a more reflective and colourful subject really exaggerated the aesthetic that this lighting technique provides and greatly enhanced the overall outcome of the image. As opposed to the more balanced lighting of the previous shoot I decided to vary the output of the flash’s casting greater shadows on one side.
