I can’t believe the growing season is almost over:( I am already getting a little sad about it and although I’ve got a fair amount of house plants, I know I’ll miss the wild piles of leaves and all the creatures I see when I’m outside. I’ve been drawing a few little things lately to practice making stencils for tattooing that are plant and mushroom related. Here’s a little one I did last week in ink! . In other news, the #WorldRoulette Kickstarter is still happening and it’s been so exciting! We’ve done a lot of work on the project and are excited that we’ve reached the goal to unlock the foil and book cloth cover! Very cool. Anyway- if you get a chance to check it out, please do, it’s a project I worked very hard on this summer amidst the craziness of 2020. Hope you’re having a great Tuesday so far:) . #sketch #kickstarter #kickstartercampaign #mushroom #illustration #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #art #blackworktattoo #tattooartist #penandink #tattoo https://www.instagram.com/p/CFcgGuzjdfJ/?igshid=10zvt250dkvsj

A few funny carrots from the garden:) Its root vegetable and squash season! . I have a creepy room in my basement that’s always felt a little uneasy to me. I’m sure it is a root cellar, but when I go down there to do my laundry, I get weird vibes from it and have kept it closed and have always pushed boxes or big furniture in front of the door so that I don’t have to remember it’s there. It’s dark and damp and once, 15 years ago, when I moved in, my neighbor told me there was a vortex in my home but she sealed it up and buried the stone she used in the yard somewhere. I thanked her but never forgot she said that. . So yesterday, for the first time ever, I thought about going down there and opening the door to see whether or not it still creeped me out and wondered if it could eventually be a place where I store my root/squash vegetables. What would you do?? 🤔Do I go look? . #garden #root #rootvegetables #carrot #homegrown #homegrownveggies #creepycellar https://www.instagram.com/p/CFaLnkTjGuC/?igshid=18mvumhfdvpij

I’ve been making all these patterns for the inside of the Word Roulette book— here’s a little mushroom pattern for the Blight chapter! If you haven’t seen the Kickstarter, definitely go check it out @lightgreyartlab or just stick World Roulette Kickstarter into google and you’ll find it! We are trying to reach the first stretch goal to get the cover upgraded to book cloth and 2 foil stamps! 🤞🏽 . Last year I inoculated a bunch of logs with oyster mushroom dowels and I have no idea if I’m going to get mushrooms this fall or not? But still, it was a fun project and at the end of the year it seems like the right thing to do. I’ve seen all of these really great ideas where you put a bunch of straw or hay in a laundry basket And grow tons and tons of oyster mushrooms that way, and that looks like fun too. . Anyway, if I ever decide to expand my garden to basement mushroom growing, I’ll let you know--but for now I’m just waiting around to see what happens and drawing them instead. . #mushrooms #illustration #patterndesign #pattern #patterns #worldroulette #lightgreyartlab #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CFM8CF-DSX5/?igshid=bkzq9f4uwxk5

Here are a few little planted pots I drew the other night! :) Fun news— I’ve begun apprenticing with @manchubaby and am looking forward to adding tattooing to my multi-faceted art life! It’s been great getting to know more about the field— I’m very excited as it’s a great blend of the things I love (people, art, and projects) it’s also been cool seeing some art friends tattooing recently, too! . Looking forward to learning more and hopefully I’ll see a few of you for some tattoos when I get my sea legs! 🤍 . #tattoo #tattooideas #art #blackworktattoo #drawing #illustration #penandink #botanical #tattooartist #plants #drawing #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CFIMakKDhJ9/?igshid=1rqqttp7rd80e

The buns are still enjoying my yard, but they’ve moved on to a different series of snacks— it seems they’re leaving my garden alone except to relax a little and come back for old times sake. I can’t believe it’s half way through August! Time really does fly. . I’m keeping up with the produce, just barely. I’ve already for 3/4 of the big freezer filled for the winter, which is really nice:) I can already tell the squash is taking over. That’s what the plant is that this bun is hiding under! It’s butternut squash! . I’m up late tonight taking 5 minutes from the World Roulette book designs (whew! It’s a marathon!) before another hour of drawing. I used to be able to do the all-nighters but I think I’m done with that for good. I can only do what I can do while I’m coherent. The rest is staying up for no good reason. Anyway, enjoy the bun! :) I’m glad they’re still visiting. . #garden #bunny #bunnies #nature #minneapolis #minnesota #squash https://www.instagram.com/p/CED4Qz9D3rh/?igshid=5lnre8feyrz2

🌱🧩🎾🏓🍅 Garden colors! . Quick question for anyone else that might know how to alleviate this— maybe it’s carpal tunnel? Or repetitive stress injury or something but I get really bad burning feelings on the tops of my hands from computer work as of this year, and sometimes they go numb, which is bad, I know:(. I get some pain in my underside of my forearms too and I am trying all sorts of ways to solve it including taking breaks, having several different setups for computer work, and trying not to have bad posture. . I’ve tried ibuprofen to help a little, am currently trying stretching more, and I’m really open to hearing anything that has worked for other artists or folks that use their hands a lot. As you know this is a dreaded curse, and I would love to continue using my hands to do things for as long as possible! . Thanks for your help and here are some more garden pics from yesterday evening: https://www.instagram.com/p/CDy3VPnjZZ7/?igshid=kaqdb3xn9r0e

Yes, it’s possible. I figured this out today. . It is like coming out of a dreamless sleep and being so sensitive that everything seems hyper real and sharp and clear. It’s like finally opening the car door after hours of being on the highway, and suddenly noticing the horizon. It’s like finding the one radio station that works in the middle of nowhere. That’s what today feels like. . These little pieces of clarity pop out of nowhere, but they empower and stabilize and promote investigation. I think they show up when we need them most. . And I feel good today. Maybe because I waded through a huge messy blob of ideas and came out excited, or maybe because I taught today and got to help inspire people that might have been in their own fog about one thing or another. I don’t know. But I feel good, and strong, and excited about what I see now. . This photo is of @janeaubourg reappearing from a misty walk near Dettifoss in Iceland. What an incredible space that was. . #iceland #contemplation #mist #fog # (at Iceland) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnYAmfvhY9a/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xg009heidt3b

Thinking back to this last month and everything it taught me. I’m thankful for every single learning experience, and for the lessons I didn’t know I needed to learn. . This was my 5th year leading the Light Grey Iceland Residency Program, and this summer I spent my time in the lonely North, where we had plenty of space, culture, surprises, and incredible views. I am thankful every day for the chance to travel with people that are so kind and generous, and I go home with new goals, a change of perspective, and I learn so many things about myself. . Right now the applications are open for 2019 and I totally encourage anyone that is looking for an opportunity to grow, learn, and transform— to apply and share this experience with others looking to do the same. Details /links (and more great photos) for the program can be found on the @lightgreyartlab Instagram page. . Anyway- lots of love to all of the amazing folks over the years that have traveled with me all over the world. I owe you so much, and have learned so much from you! <3 . #lightgreyicelandresidency #lightgreyartlab #iceland #siglufjörður (at Siglufjörður) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnSv3X0BieN/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=m9miqn407h9q

I’m slowly trying to get back into ultimate productive mode, and it’s hard! Traveling is incredible but it takes a lot to feel like you’re back in the groove after being gone so long. I think I’m getting closer. Comfort is important, and although it always feels like a tidal wave of responsibility hits me upon every return, I appreciate a space where I can say: “I am home.” . I caught Merlin trying hard to understand what it means to be comfortable. . #cats #home #comfort https://www.instagram.com/p/BnEzmUDlI5h/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1lc3xawokhwy4

I wrote 5 postcards today to people I miss back home. I love postcards and writing and find it therapeutic to just put things down on paper and then send it into the world. Once it’s out of my brain and on to a piece of paper, I can often just move on, clearing room for other thoughts and explorations. . I’ve had a permanent scowl (please see photo for reference) for the last several weeks, plus an eye twitch that won’t seem to go away. I sometimes dream of hot baths and late night sushi, and new t-shirts that I haven’t worn a million times, and that’ll all be waiting for me when I get back to Minneapolis! . But! Until then, I’m planning adventures for some wonderful people, and listening to their incredible stories, and capturing adorable images of them drawing and painting and climbing and in different stages of wonder, and that is such a privilege. . I am lucky to be here, old shirts or not, and I’m thankful. I’m learning a lot about myself and my stamina, my coffee tolerance and my ability to multitask:) . #lightgreyicelandresidency #lightgreyartlab #contemplation #iceland #hverir (at Hverir)

Little oasis’s. . Today I watched some smart people talk about emotions, and keeping records of our experiences, and self care, and finding oneself in their work. I needed that in so many ways. . I think recently I’ve felt a little overwhelmed with a couple things: getting disappointed when my high expectations aren’t met, stressing that I can’t see the future, somehow thinking that everything needs to be buttoned up to be right. I feel like some of these are just things normal people feel, yet I’m finding it easier today to do the old shrug and let go. Trying hard is great. Having goals is great. And learning to know when to recognize when to move forward is great. . So, that’s exactly what I’m going to do, but without dragging all sorts of my past thoughts around while I try something different. . Always grateful for the conversations on this residency! Thanks to everyone thus far that’s given a piece of themselves so we can all learn from your perspectives. #contemplation #lightgreyartlab #lightgreyicelandresidency (at Krafla)

Cleaning up the house today and relaxing a little after the first amazing group in Iceland. It’s a grey day out, but this country is incredible and even the everyday moments feel a little magical. Im feeling a little sad— can’t tell if it’s because I’ve just met all of these wonderful people and they’ve had to head back home to other lands, or if it’s because I miss Minneapolis and the people back home, or maybe even because I don’t know what exactly will come next after this month is over. Maybe all of those things combined. Ok— chin up, me, another exciting set of things are on the horizon. Better make a coffee and get on with writing this book I need to write. . Here is a photo from the other day’s walk to Dettifoss. This is Selfoss— the smaller of the two waterfalls and probably my favorite of the two:) . #lightgreyartlab #dettifoss #wanderlust #waterfall #moody #lightgreyartcamp (at Dettifoss)
