When the weather permits, undergraduates are seen scattered around campus with their heads bent over their reading material, and when it does not, Lethbridge Library and Danier Reading is packed from wall to wall with Volitionists working diligently at their coursework. One such group — not unlike that of their fellow classmates — come together to better grasp the content of their assigned readings, but what first begins as a standard scholarly practice soon thrusts them into a rabbit hole of strange and inconceivable discoveries

Pressed against the edge of a sable horizon, a tall structure looms in the distance. Its windows are all aglow, the scorching light from a dozen candles flickering behind a sumptuous wall of heavy curtains. Like the many eyes of an enormous spider, the rows of polished glass gaze upon a tiny slit in the skyline where the muddy earth touches the frenetic heavens, the gap exposed by a sudden burst of lightning. The air is heavy with the aroma of imminent rainfall — a slow procession of distended clouds, the howl of a north-eastern wind — and after a moment of enduring hesitation, the sky opens up

Ribbons of water lash against the windows, beating a steady rhythm into the frosted glass; the prim silence of the campus library is torn apart by the scratch of upholstered chairs against imported rugs and the echo of textbooks stacked haphazardly on top of one another. One by one, a smattering of students turn their backs upon the endless rows of ancient publications and smoking candelabras and squeeze through the rain-slick doors of Lethbridge Library like a colony of ants. The silence that follows is temporary, the hush perforated by the slow approach of Oxfords on slate and sandstone

A silhouette emerges from between the crowded rows of limited edition encyclopedias; they raise a hand and tuck their thumb and forefinger between their lips, the gesture captured in flickering relief upon an adjacent wall. They whistle once and wait in the ensuing silence, eyes sweeping the endless cache of ledgers and literature until they land upon the rounded edge of a shoulder, the pointed toe of a maroon brogue, a hand skimming the edge of an old banister. One by one, an assortment of wry smiles are exchanged in quiet greeting before the quartet moves as a single shadow to navigate the narrow arteries of mahogany shelves and scalloped pages

In a remote corner of the library — beneath an unassuming square of old stone — a labyrinth of filing cabinets and empty sconces await. One after another, the motley group of scholars descend into the darkness, their eyes straining against the endless black, fingers grasping for the metallic edge of a locked drawer or for the dog-eared corner of a manila envelope. And once the oil slick black softens into charcoal, they pick through the underground maze to a quiet litany of “watch your head” and “look at this”, ineffably swept away by a dangerous curiousity

Growing in excess along the remote mountains of Aberdeen, P. atrabilious is a hallucinogenic fungus with its earliest known usage on campus dating back to the sixties. The magic mushrooms — colloquially known as ‘psi’ — experienced a short period of circulation at Galloway before it was prohibited under the administration of then Vice Chancellor, Alfred Bray. Now, decades later, ‘psi’ has since been reintroduced to the student body and carefully curated to only affect those with Volition at their disposal While the long-term effects of ‘psi’ remain largely unknown, what toxicology has been documented lists the following adverse effects:

nausea and vomiting

High above a labyrinth of pointed arches and stained glass windows, a January sun glows bright — a half-formed eye peering through a collage of passing clouds. The sky is painted in shades of eggshell and stone, and the wind blowing in from across Otter Creek is cold and unrepentant, forcing the scholars scattered across Galloway’s acres to turn up the collars on their coats. They move as one — a herd of polyester, faux leather, and cashmere, their hands and faces chapped from the elements, their shoulders ladened with knapsacks and the weight of expectation. The cobbled walkways leading from one stone structure to the next is an endless tide of stiff limbs and rime-slick shoes, and Gregory Reynolds is buoyed along, freckled hands red with cold

His head is bent low against the wind as he schlepps along, desperate to escape the bite of winter. He moves as fast as his legs can carry him, elbows flared outward for added momentum. The Lyceum looms in the distance, its ancient face framed by glittering icicles and tufts of snow. Breaking away from the herd of chattering teeth, Gregory picks his way through puddles that have frozen over and a sizeable mound of snow; he can almost feel the warmth of the foyer against his face and the hard plastic of his assigned seat beneath him, but the mental image is dashed when he comes to a sudden stop 

The cold of the salted ground draws an anguished sound from deep within him as he shoves against the weight on top of him. “Oh, shit — my bad.” He leans back onto his elbows and grits his teeth as the student sprawled over his thighs scrambles to their feet and then extends a gloved hand. Gregory hoists himself upward with their help and sweeps the mangled surface of his palms against his damp jeans, another apology fast on his tongue. His words are dismissed with the wave of the student’s hand and then a hastily made peace sign before they shoulder by and disappear into the surging wall of students

Gregory — head bent once more, his cheeks high with the colour of embarrassment — shakes off the collision before something catches his eye; he watches as a shimmering square of plastic is almost crushed underfoot before darting forward to retrieve it. His brows pinch together and then his mouth opens. His studies, he decides, can wait

In the warmth of his dormitory, Gregory breaks the seal on the tiny gold bag; he rolls what appears to be a stem between his thumb and forefinger before consuming it. The minutes tick by with little fanfare and Gregory exhales an exasperated breath. “This shit is garbage,” he mumbles, moving to his feet and reaching for his coat. But then his hand stills and his eyes widen — his fingers multiply in length and number, and a pale light blooms between his knuckles

The room turns onto its side as he steps forward and the door is thrown open into the wall. A jagged line runs through the picture frame mounted on his bedside table. His four-poster levitates

The floor beneath his feet shudders, rising and falling as if a giant breath is being taken. He can hear chatter from all across the campus — a moment of hesitation before a question is asked in a far off classroom, the hushed concern of his housemate in the room over. Gregory is on his knees, nails digging into the floorboards, his head thrown back onto his shoulders

In the late evening of Friday, January 31st, lacrosse captain, Matthias Carver, was last seen hastily leaving a party hosted at Paragon House — since then, his whereabouts have gone unknown, inciting concern amongst his peers. His teammates, however, suspect that there is more to Matthias’ disappearance — that something sinister had set its sights upon him and that it is only a matter of time before one of them falls prey next

The atmosphere is thick with the intermittent outbreak of laughter and the pungent aroma of marijuana; Paragon House throbs in the early minutes of midnight, the walls and floors trembling with the force of a frenzied beat; in a dimly lit corner of a densely occupied room, a small group of upperclassmen watch the festivities from their vantage point of scarlet cups. They’re all carbon copies of one another, each one draped in the heavy fabric of a maroon jacket, heads bobbing to the music with practiced disinterest. They whisper amongst themselves, a mob of handsome demigods basking in the attention of hopeful admirers and eager peers

Collin Forsythe yawns. Dante Harris drinks deeply from his cup. Patrick Morris deposits a small tablet onto the flat of his tongue. Nathan King reaches for the hem of a pleated skirt. And Matthias Carver goes pale

His face empties of all colour, the flush of alcohol consumed disappearing beneath the collar of his varsity coat, the breath in his lungs catching as he slides his thumb downward; the digit hovers over the screen for a moment before he presses ‘play’. Bile begins its slow ascent into his throat as realization and dread descend upon his shoulders. The sophomore’s hand begins to shake and the phone tumbles free from his sweat-slick fingers onto the sticky floor below. He retrieves it — inspects the screen and cameras for damage — and swallows, the cartilage in his throat bobbing at the sound of an incoming notification 

Matthias’ thumb makes contact with the screen again and he gasps. Collin turns to him and Nathan raises an eyebrow. “You good, man?” Dante asks, leaning over his teammate’s shoulder. “Bro, what are you watching?” 

A large hand emerges from the shadows, thick fingers closing around his wrist; the phone is held aloft for his peers to see. A look of confusion ripples across heavy brows and jaws flecked with stubble before a rumble of laughter bursts forth from each male in turn. Matthias shakes himself loose from his teammate’s grasp and disappears into the impenetrable throng of students, a large hand pressed to his mouth. The contents of his stomach spill between his fingers as he makes his way to the nearest door, the remnants of a hastily made dinner and vintage liquor speckling the front of his letterman, slicking the edge of his wrist

Panicked, Matthias disappears into the night, phone limp in his hand, the sound of his footsteps dampened by the fixed chorus of a single metallic note. He wanders the empty grounds of the academy until he’s grown tired of his hand vibrating with the urgency of unanswered phone calls — until desperately, an idea takes root. Yarrow’s Loch stands black and still against a backdrop of frostbitten grass, its surface gleaming beneath the moon. The heel of his sneakers splinters the thin patina of ice spread across the stagnant water before he tosses his phone into the unseen depths — before he steps beyond the silt and into the bottomless cold

Soused in mystery and perennial vines, Paragon House sits on the edge of Old Campus overlooking Yarrow’s Loch. The three-storey mansion was first used to house Galloway’s founders, but upon expansion of the academy, it has since been reserved for Galloway's most zealous Volitionists. A spot within The Dionysus Chapter is highly coveted and underclassmen are recruited based on their academic standing and merits accrued. The Chapter’s initiation process remains a topic of campus gossip and speculation as initiates who have failed the process conveniently struggle to recall what took place. Upon successfully completing their initiation, aspiring underclassmen are moved into Paragon where they will remain for the rest of their enrollment

The hush swells to a crescendo — bloated by the indigo and carbon of approaching nightfall — before it’s thrust aside by the hiss of a match

In the paltry darkness, the entrails of Paragon House begin to stir; there’s a litany of hushed voices, the crackle! and pop! of a distant — but blazing — hearth, and the solemn ascension of flickering shadows. The air is taut, its invisible tethers yoked carefully around bent heads and sweating necks; in the cold dark of the basement, an ancient tradition is maintained, its origins conceived of crystal glasses, distilled wormwood, and the wink of signet rings

Mouths run slick with saliva and the emerald foam of absinthe, bruised and chapped and sworn to secrecy. One by one, those who wish to solicit glory within the hallowed halls of Paragon House step forward, determined to test their Volition against that of their peers. Names are drawn and twitching fingers are forced towards the leaping inferno of the fireplace. The room begins to smell of smoking flesh and scorched bone, the low-hanging ceiling of the basement swallowing whole the intermittent cries of anguish, the frenzied apologies galloping across panicked tongues, the echo of muted laughter behind scarred knuckles

Those who have failed — their palms blackened, the flesh on their wrists and fingers blistered and bubbling — are herded away, the weight of a mocking hand heavy upon their trembling shoulders while the triumphant remain, sweat collecting on their furrowed brows, a voracious appetite evident in the whites of their eyes. The words that they have longed to hear remain unspoken, and instead, waft into the air — a celebration of cinders and ash

In the late seventeenth century, what was first believed to be the onset of enduring mental illness would later be recognized as a rare endowment of the human mind. At first, Volition — which was misinterpreted as psychosis, witchcraft, demonic possession, and pious fraud — was believed to be a condition that required neurological intervention. Those who were suspected of performing extraordinary feats of the mind were subjected to invasive physical therapy that often left the recipient incontinent or lacking significant cognitive function.

The smudging and attempted erasure of Volition was eventually met with resistance by those who understood that select minds had developed in such a way that deserved to be sanctified and explored. Soon, conversation surrounding Volition was prohibited and individuals who claimed themselves proficient in the craft were barred from practicing, but in 1697, practitioners new to the colonies elected to document this “cerebral anomaly” and build a sanctuary where they could indulge their curiousity without fear of consequence, criticism, or interruption. And while decades of observation did little to provide a substantial explanation into the origins of shared metaphysical abilities, with their resources combined, New England’s most accomplished men conceived Galloway Academy in the quiet town of Aberdeen.

In the years that have since passed, the art of Volition has been further studied and divided into four major disciplines, and practitioners — otherwise known as ‘Volitionists’ — are given the privilege of mastering all four competencies during their tenure at the Academy. Prospective students are first sourced from home where their abilities are observed from afar over a period of five to seven years; thereafter, they are then given the opportunity to participate in an assessment of their character and abilities — individuals who possess a negligible amount of Volition or test poorly on their personality assessment are subject to removal from the university.

Upon successful enrollment, students are provided hands-on experience as well as theory-led instruction; at the end of every second term, pupils may apply for Matriculation with an appointed instructor. Aspiring Volitionists that maintain an exemplary grade point average may continue their personalized education with an instructor for the remainder of their enrollment before obtaining further tutelage from the Vice Chancellor.

It is believed that many of Galloway’s alumni often obtain a position of significant influence within the broader society upon completion of their studies. With a resounding return on intellectual investment, it has been — and continues to be — Galloway’s mission to take the sharpest minds in North America and mold them to perfection

𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐔𝐋𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍

A divisive use of Volition among scholars, Volitionists possess the ability to manipulate the thoughts, actions, and emotions of others. The duration and intensity of this experience is dependent on the level of skill applied by the practitioner; a novice may lull their subject into a state of hypnosis while an adept user might assume complete control over their target. In Who Are We, If Not Gods? (Greene, 1999, pg. 402-403), Volitionists that have mastered the grim art of compelling those around them often develop the ability to manipulate the primary senses, and with dedicated practice, may produce a number of hallucinations, thus subjecting the mind of their victim(s) to an infinite loop of terror

𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐀

With this ability, Volitionists may impede the movement and traveling speed of objects or individuals at their behest. In the associated literature, Volition: A Case Study in New England (Butler, 1943), there are numerous accounts of practitioners silencing their peers by inhibiting the mobility of their tongues (colloquially known as ‘tying’) or otherwise rendering their bodies immobile for extended periods of time. With prolonged use on a specific target, users run the risk of inflicting irreversible damage to an affected individual, such as poor cognitive function or atrophy of the muscles

𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐉𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

Using a sufficient amount of mental force, practitioners possess the ability to impose their will against obstacles both inanimate and sentient. This use of power is most often associated with prolonged concentration or heightened emotions, and without sufficient care and dexterity, users are susceptible to ‘weeping’. In the posthumous publication, Dare To Know, Dawson Abernathy alleges that Volitionists who have refined the art of projection are capable of infiltrating the mind of their target without alerting them to the intrusion, and adversely, can wield their mind in such a way that any harm they inflict upon their victim may bear the same results as if they were created during a physical altercation

Upon joining our Discord server, members will be given the opportunity to declare their activity level(s) via server roles in order to establish transparency and manage expectations with their peers. Activity levels are not static and may be changed depending on the demands of a member's real-life beyond this hobby. The activity levels are as follows:

low — one (1) full-length post every three (3) weeks

medium — five (5) or more full-length posts every three (3) weeks

high —ten (10) or more full-length posts every three (3) weeks

Informal activity checks will be conducted on a monthly basis. In order for members to uphold activity standards, an in-character post must be written every three (3) weeks per character; members who have characters involved in a subplot will be expected to post every fourteen (14) days. The criteria for maintaining sufficient activity includes active participation in a full-length thread — while communication threads, development forums, and out-of-character games contribute to MERIT (otherwise known as course credits) earned on-site, those mediums will not be used to measure character activity 

Upon failing to meet activity standards, members are allotted seventy-two (72) hours to respond to or create a long-form thread. If the character(s) remain inactive and there is no effort to communicate with staff after being notified of inactivity, the character will be archived and the face claim made available for use. Members that wish to restore their character(s) may publish an open thread or reply to a thread that they were a participant in; once proof of resumed activity has been received, members are expected to re-submit their claims 

If members anticipate a change in their activity, we encourage them to make use of the ACADEMIC PROBATION thread on-site and partner with a member of staff to discuss extensions if they are required. Members who are absent from the site during an activity check will be exempt from the sweep and the associated requirements; however, members on a consecutive departure from the site will not be excluded unless they have maintained activity during the cool-down period 

While we do not want to place strict limitations on character creation — and encourage members to conceptualize as many characters as they can reasonably manage — members are entitled to four (4) free characters; additional character slots are subject to purchase in THE GUILD (alongside proof of established character activity) in order to minimize the likelihood of abandoned plots, inconsistency, and recurring activity notices

While joining our Discord server is compulsory for individuals who have submitted a successful member application, we encourage members to interact with the community in whatever way serves them best; however, members who opt to take their leave from the server will have their absence interpreted as a departure from 𝑳𝑰𝑴𝑬𝑹𝑬𝑵𝑪𝑬 and their written content archived. Members who wish to return must wait until the application process re-opens

We understand the dynamic nature of online spaces and the opportunity for conflict to arise therein, and so, there is a withstanding expectation that members conduct themselves in a manner that does not disrupt the broader community — concerns and conflict are to be handled in private with staff if our involvement is deemed necessary or in direct messages between the affected individuals

There is a zero tolerance policy for behaviour beyond our story-telling that is intended to cause distress, intimidate, or otherwise elicit harm; members who fail to adhere to this rule will have their access to the site and server revoked. That being said, we operate on a three-strikes system with minor misdemeanors: a first infraction will warrant a gentle warning issued in a ticket between the member and staff; a second infraction will warrant an official warning; and a third infraction will be subject to removal from the server and accessibility to the site revoked. Members who have been issued a final warning will have two weeks to retrieve their published work via view-only access and then their content will be removed indefinitely

With the influx of artificial intelligence, we discourage the use of online generators to assist members in the creation of their character(s) and their published work; if suspected and confirmed, staff will extend a one-time courtesy to have the associated material re-written and re-submitted for approval
