I know we’re enjoying all the fanart of smiley, happy Dick as Robin to complement a shy, broody Battinson. But I definitely prefer angry, vengeful Dick, at least to start out. Angry Dick Grayson is not only more tonally compatible with the Batman, it has the capacity to be incredibly funny.

Things a rage-filled Dick could entail for the Battinson universe:

Bruce having to employ the “learn one, do one, teach one” method to the concept of “you cannot live for vengeance alone” like… thirty minutes after figuring it out for himself.

Alfred radiating UNIMAGINABLE smugness in every scene in which all three of them appear. As far as Alfred is concerned this is karma for all the shit Bruce pulled at that age.

A Bruce who is suddenly acutely aware of exactly what it is like to be in charge of a highly intelligent orphan hell-bent on revenge. He keeps shooting increasingly panicked looks in Alfred’s direction.

Alfred is very pointedly not returning these looks. After all, as Bruce keeps moodily reminding him, he is not Bruce’s father. Therefore, that’s not his grandbaby.

Unfortunately while Bruce and Alfred were engaging in their nonverbal argument about the pitfalls of impulse-adoption, Not-His-Grandbaby has climbed onto the chandelier. He is now refusing to come down.

All suggestions that maybe he should come down are met with incredibly moody scoffs and incredulous barbs along the lines of, “what, do you think I’ll fall?”

The chandelier is over a hundred years old. The Manor, which stood abandoned for almost a decade has only just been re-opened since Bruce has Ideas about the Appropriate Place to Raise a Child. It has not been very well maintained. The entire ceiling is creaking ominously.

Battinson on Twitter Part 3: Common Interests

Tonight Dick accompanied me on patrol to help with a minor investigation. He sat on my shoulders and pretended my Bat-ears were joysticks. I saw some of the officers laughing at me. I hid away in the shadows. I am a phantom.

Dick wanted McDonalds on the way home. I said no, because we have chicken nuggets in the freezer. He bullied me until I relented and we both got Happy Meals. I asked for no onions. I got extra onions. The toys were Sonic the Hedgehog themed. I wanted Shadow. I got Tails. Dick would not trade with me.

Bruce finished his journal entry and shoved the notebook away with a sigh. His phone was buzzing again and he recoiled. What did Michelle want now? He stared at the screen until the call went to voicemail and grimaced when he saw a number of texts popping up.

Michelle (PR): Mr. Wayne it's time for your weekly social media engagement.

Michelle (PR): As per my last email, please try to be more friendly this time. Even though last week's tweet went viral, it didn't give a very friendly impression. No one knows if you were joking or not when you said "Don't talk to me." That's one of the no-nos I was talking about.

Michelle (PR): I know you're screening my calls. I know you're awake.

Michelle (PR): Please just share something pleasant about yourself. A hobby (golf, polo), art you like (nothing risque or controversial), something you ate/cooked. Focus on *common interests.*

Michelle (PR): I look forward to reading your next tweet! :)

Agent Starlight (real name: Anya Forger) and Agent Midnight (real name: Damian Desmond) are given a task: to pretend to be a married couple. The catch? They’re feuding highschool exes.

“And,” Anya continued, voice softer now, “you kept my secret even when you hated me. I don’t think I’ve ever properly thanked you for that.”

Damian’s heart clenched. All those years of betrayal and pain and nostalgia rose like a wave. “I… I just didn’t know what else I could do,” he said truthfully. 

W.I.S.E. also liked pairing them up for missions, presumably so they could learn to pass as a lovey dovey couple. Damian always felt useless and he was just tagging along. Anya’s problem-solving skills were something else and he had a vague feeling he was dragging her down. However, Damian was more careful than Anya, so he’d always had multiple plans in his head and spare weapons hidden in his clothes. It didn’t appear Anya needed anything he prepared, which was both irritating and relieving.

You can live on without me, Anya. You never needed me outside of the mission, whether Strix or this one. I should be happy for you, but I’m a horrible, selfish creature. I need you. Being hated by you is better than having you out of my life. Is it bad that I want you to want me too, even if I don’t exactly want you? Also I forgot you can read minds so you probably know all of this already.

Loid was smiling and misty eyed when he walked Anya down the aisle. “Don’t do it,” Anya almost wanted to plead. “I’m not really marrying Damian. I’ll be your daughter forever.”

But those thoughts faded away when she saw Damian standing in front of her, so close yet so far. The audience was entranced by them, every pair of eyes on Anya. The wedding march should have sounded like a mockery but Anya gave in. She let the warm swell of the music envelope her. The sweet scent of the flowers didn’t seem so saccharine after all. This was supposed to be fake, fake, so fake.

So why did Anya want to cry?

Hot take? Batman meta? It's absolutely Batman meta lmao.

Here goes:

I've seen quite a few posts (including my own) stating that the Robert Pattinson version of Batman is THE Batman that we could imagine taking on Robin. And as much as we joke about it being because it would be adorable and that this grunge man needs a sunshine child, there are some big reasons why we believe it. Recently I read someone say that they don't think this version of Bruce is ready to be a father yet.

That's the point.

He's not ready to be a father.

I think fandom Batfamily (and some canon now) give us an expectation of how Bruce was, with Dick specifically, that isn't always true. To be fair, because there's so much lore and reset timelines, I work off the point of view that canon is really whatever you personally choose it to be. That being said, in my personal interpretation of the Batfamily (and in particular Bruce's relation with Dick) is that Bruce absolutely was NOT ready to be a parent when he offered Dick a home. Dick was his most impulsive decision. He saw this kid about to go through the same thing that he went through and offered him a home. Bruce never took in Dick under the understanding that he would have to be a responsible parent. I 100% believe that Dick taught Bruce a lot about being human, about being a parent, and about being someone that those you care about look up to.

Moreover, Dick Grayson wasn't always the "sunshine child". Especially after the murder of his parents. Dick was angry, irrational, he was willing to get himself killed to get revenge on the man that killed his parents (Zucco). In all understanding, Dick becoming Robin wasn't because Bruce thought it would be cute or because HE wanted Dick anywhere around the criminal element of Gotham. It was because if he DIDN'T, not only was Dick going to do it regardless, but Dick probably would have died in the process. Or become a very dangerous criminal. Bruce weighed his options and because he was, himself, for lack of a better term, unstable, decided that training Dick, teaching him restraint and rules, was the best and only option available. In doing so Bruce ended up acclimating himself to having a partner that can pull him back when he's going too far into vengeance.

I don't want Battinson to have a Robin because I think it'd be cute. I want it because I think this is the Bruce that is most likely to make that sort of moral judgement that even he ends up admitting farther down the line (when he IS ready to be a parent, when he's learned a lot more) wasn't the one he should have made. On top of that, I think this is the universe where Dick Grayson (one of my absolute favorite characters) could get the most accurate representation and growth.

Bruce Wayne didn't have much hope, or exist much at all, until he learned how to exist for someone else, until he learned hope from this kid that's lost as much as Bruce did and is determined to find joy despite that. In many ways, Bruce and Dick saved each other. Bruce learns how to heal himself by watching Dick heal (and then it all gets torn away, to a point, after Jason dies but that's a discussion for another time).

I think it would be amazing to see on screen - the Bat being saved by a kid. Robin no longer being the butt of jokes. A complex relationship that ends up defining an entire universe - after all, at this point, there is no Batman without a Robin.
