Observing and Describing
The place: The street near my childhood home
The time: December 12, 2:36 PM
The weather: Chilly breeze but fair overall
The street: The streets are empty, which isn't that weird considering that my neighborhood is never really all that active. People have set up Christmas decorations on their front lawns and I’m enjoying looking at them as I walk around.
The buildings: They are homely but quiet, my best guess is that everyone is out grocery shopping (said as someone who was raised to grocery shop on Sundays, haha.)
Rhythm: There is one person roughly every four minutes of wandering, and one car roughly every three. Every once in a while it gets really crazy and I might see a person and a car at the same time.

Doing Nothing.
This assignment was an amusing thing to receive as someone who has struggled with paying attention to anything longer that a minute all of their life. I honestly could not do this, I think the single rule in my own existence is that at any given time I have to be doing something. That something could be as small as picking at my nails but it is still a comically intense battle for me to not do even that. I guess my definition of doing nothing still has me receiving mental stimulation in some way.

Skeumorphs
Tumblr media
My group discussed skeumorphs for our topic this week. We went over how skeumorphs are objects that replicate other objects/elements of objects but lose their function. For our example we chose a dollhouse because everything in the house as well as the house itself are skeumorphs, objects depicting other objects sans their original function.

These three images all picture something that is a representation or is a representation itself.
Image #1- This image is a picture of my cat (named Smudge!) that my mother sent me from home. The picture itself is an extremely accurate representation of him, with no omissions of information towards his appearance besides his size (he’s a Maine coon so he’s huge). The smaller size he appears to be is a distortion from the distance and environment he was photographed in. The representation is successful in its function.
Image #2- This is a digital painting I did of Kali Uchis in high school that I have hanging in my room. The picture is a representation of Kali Uchis, and though she is recognizable, the portrait I made definitely omits information about her appearance. Seeing the portrait alongside the reference used makes that clear. I do, however, think the representation is successful overall.
Image #3 This is a photo of the mouthwash I am currently using, which is coconut lime flavored (It tastes awful don't buy it). The label is a representation of the flavor the mouthwash is supposed to be. The distortions come from the painterly style the limes and coconuts were painted. The representation is however accurate to the flavor being described, making it successful in conveying the information.

Short Writing Response (Intro, #1)
What is your current understanding of, or experience with, Design Theory?
My current understanding of design theory is very minimal, but I want to expand it.
What do you expect to get out of this class, and how do you expect it to help you as a designer?
I'm hoping to leave this class with new knowledge of design theory that helps me grow as a designer.
