I get it, and I do that too, and I don't think people using what has become THE unescapable feature of all social media ever are wrong to do so, I just wish it had never been implemented so widely

I think that having 'likes' - by design measured and comparable - makes 'giving my mutual a little heart' feel so much weaker than it actually is - a comment like this ⬇️

is saying the same thing as clicking the like button but it feels more (at least to me) like a person reaching out and sending love and that's immensely meaningful to me,

Meanwhile the 'like' button removes the person from the interaction and leaves the measurement and comparisons. Every single thing you can post is measured and this makes it comparable to everything else from yourself and from others, no matter what it actually is, making every single thing you ever say in these spaces feel like taking part in a competition, like you're on a stage and need to entertain your audience. It's an applause meter!
