hey everyone, i’m back with some more hot takes™! well, not really hot takes, but some loose instructions if you’re planning on submitting your MS to an agency! this is just from what i observed reading manuscripts for MONTHS
1. ALWAYS check the agency’s website for any specific instructions.
most won’t have any, but some will, and it’s important to follow what they want you to do, even if it goes against some of the things i’m about to tell you!
2. Times New Roman, font size 12, double spaced. Black font.
don’t try and get fancy—save that for when it’s actually being published, and the design dept at the publishing agency will give you a nice pretty font or fun colors if you need (think marie lu with legend)
3. Title page!
this is important! include your name, address, email/phone number, the genre and the word count (to the nearest 100) in the upper lefthand corner. in the center of the page, have the title (in a slightly bigger font). you CAN put your name under the title, too; it’s up to you. this is before the first page of your MS.
4. page numbers!
you should include page numbers, but also include your name and the title! the manuscripts i read had the page number either at the bottom of the page, or at the top with their last name (like a book report would have). my recommendation would be to have the page number at the bottom, and then your name and the title at the top.
5. spacing and whatnot
i mentioned double spacing your MS, and that is still true. the rest of the spacing? the standard on microsoft word is fine. keep the margins how they are.
6. microsoft word!
send your MS as a .docx file, NOT a pdf. unless the agency website says otherwise, they are going to want it sent as a word document. the agents/interns will be reading it from word.
7. naming the file
the file name of your MS should be the title and your name, or something similar, as long as it looks professional! some of the manuscripts i got didn’t have the author’s name in the file name, and that was fine, i just preferred to have it!
8. other things
– start every chapter on it’s own page!
– make sure your chapter numbers are right! ive read a couple where the numbers were off and it drove me crazy bc i kept track of the plot based on what happened in each chapter. if you’re using chapter titles, i would still include a number.
– alignment: i like things with the justified alignment, but most manuscripts i got had left alignment. either is fine; i just think justified makes it look neater, AND published books are usually justified. just a thought, but really it’s up to you
remember, these are just general guidelines, but highly recommended as they’ll aid in professionalism. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, and i cannot stress this enough, ALWAYS check the agency website to see if they have different guidelines for submission! make sure you check the specific agent you’re querying to see if they have specific submission guidelines! usually, the tips i just shared will be fine across the board, but check anyway just to make sure.
and finally, here are some more resources if you need!

Things to avoid as a new witch ✨
Cultural appropriation
don’t incorporate the practices of closed cultures into your craft - it’s not your place to do so; this includes “smudging,” the use of dream catchers when obtained from non-natives, engaging in practices that are exclusive to poc if you are not a poc, etc.
Stereotyping
don’t buy into the idea that all witches are evil, female, worship the devil, are wiccan, etc.
on the same note, if you follow the wiccan ideology of the rule of three and “harm none” and all that jazz, don’t assume that everyone follows your path because, and this might be shocking to you, we don’t
Over-harvesting
refrain from using herbs that are endangered, threatened, or even sacred to some cultures, such as white sage or palo santo
there is always an alternative and an endless amount of herbs you can use in place of the popular ones you see floating around the internet
Purposely posting harmful information
before you freak out, hear me out: there is so much awful information out there, and part of me wants to believe that these people just don’t know any better but the other part of me knows that they legit believe in things like essential oils as a cure, and that vaccinations and healthcare providers are evil
don’t be that person
know that science and witchcraft can exist in the same world, and that you should not ignore medical advice in lieu of a magickal cure
Content theft
even if you’re saving things for your own use at a later date, tumblr has this nifty feature in which you can “reblog” things rather than save them and reupload them yourself - don’t repost, reblog
also please don’t screenshot popular posts and reupload them to places like instagram, pinterest, or facebook; rather, reblog our posts or find our instagram accounts to follow and support the original creators
it may seem utterly ridiculous, but believe it or not, content authors like myself put a ton of work into the stuff we post here - don’t think that because you reuploaded our work elsewhere that you’re “doing us a favor” and “helping to spread information” because you’re absolutely not
if you see content theft, please tell OP so they can report it and help put an end to the seemingly never ending content theft in this community
Gatekeeping
know that your path will likely differ from the next witch, and understand that there’s a difference between belittling someone for their beliefs and having a mature, educated discussion about it
the same goes for correcting actual misinformation or information that can be deemed harmful
it’s 100% okay to have different beliefs than what you see presented here on tumblr, just don’t be a dick about it
don’t like emoji spells? don’t use them. not a wiccan? who cares. perform curses? great!
in the grand scheme of things, we are all users on the same website - what we do with our practice in our own space is our business so, ultimately you should do what works for you but be open to criticism if you decide to post it publicly

I'm having problems communicating with my spirit companion. Like, I just can't do it. Maybe it's because I'm new, maybe I'm rushing it. But, opening my third eye and telepathy are things I don't know how to do. And everything I've seen so far is either too vague or something I haven't even heard of. So, could you help me? You could link me things or just write it out. P. S. Astral travel is scary but if I had more info and more real life stories I feel like is be more comfortable. Thank you.
Hi there! I know this is an extremely belated answer, and I really hope you were able to resolve this situation. But I’m going to go ahead and answer it anyway, since it may be helpful to someone now!
If you’re new to the idea of witchcraft, opening yourself up, astral travel, and the like, it can be really scary and overwhelming. If you’ve already gotten yourself a spirit companion, it may be the first time you’re introduced to any of these things. But there is no rush - your companion likely knew this going in, and they are not desperately trying to batter through your natural psychic barriers! They are on the other side, being just as patient, waiting for you to be ready.
One of my all-time favorite books about opening yourself up psychically, which has exercises I still use to this day, is You Are Psychic by Debra Lynne Katz. The book preaches an end goal of clairvoyance, but I find that even its first few exercises teach a lot about visualization, and its importance in energy and spirit work. I recommend starting there.
The thing about spirit and energy work is that it is often going to feel like it’s “all in your head,” especially when you are starting out and don’t yet have the skills to tell the difference between yourself and “the other.” But the most important thing for me is being able to explain this in a way that feels logical, even to those who might never have touched any kind of new age thing before. So, yeah, I’ll say it - sometimes it feels weird and out-there. It doesn’t make the most sense in a real-world context. It doesn’t always feel real, you don’t always see visions clearly or in real-time, most people can’t hear the voices of their spirit guides in their physical ears. Almost none of it is physical, actually. A lot of it feels internal.
Telepathy can feel like you’re talking to yourself in your head. Astral travel can feel like daydreaming. Witchcraft can feel like saying silly words over silly items. What brings it gravitas and power is what you bring to the table - how seriously you’re going to take it. How frequently you’re going to show up. I consider it to be a lot like this: I played in bands and orchestras for years. Before, all instruments sounded the same to me, or I didn’t care to differentiate, even if I knew what they looked like and what they were supposed to sound like. But I showed up every day and participated and listened for years, and now I know what each instrument sounds like, what it sounds like combined with others, and how that differs from my own instrument’s timbre.
So, if you’re just beginning to develop your psychic skills, start here. It will take time, and practice, but your patience will reward you in time.
Learn how to ground:
Visualize a cord, or roots, stretching from the base of your spine and down into the earth.
Breathe deeply. As you breathe in, imagine energy from the ground pulling up through that cord, filling you with light. As you breathe out, imagine that light washing away any darkness or blockages with you.
Work from your toes to your head. Take your time. If you feel you need to spend more time on one section, stay there for a while.
When you feel you are done, imagine the cord detaching painlessly from your body.
Learn how to stimulate your third eye:
The third eye cannot be forced open (or if it can, it’s not extremely beneficial for you). When doing the grounding/cleansing exercise I outlined above, take time to focus on the point in the middle of your forehead.
It might naturally tingle, and one day you might feel its sensations come naturally to you. But very few people can physically see with their third eye. It’s going to be more about spiritually seeing - not with your eyes, but with your non-physical sense.
Throughout the day, imagine energy swirling around your third eye, like one of those twirling loading circles.
Interact with your third eye. Press it with your thumb. Think about it casually. Put your palm over it and imagine giving it a warm glow of energy. Put diluted oil blends on it (and be sure to wash them off later, if your skin is sensitive). Take time to take care of it.
Repeat this often. This is an elongated process with no specific end-point.
Create a psychic space for yourself:
Learn to enter and craft a space inside yourself. This is especially helpful as a meeting place for you and your companions. A good friend of mine calls her “The White Room.” Mine looks like a treehouse. Allow yours to fit your needs, and your personality. Let it change and evolve as you do.
Find some quiet time to meditate. You can use free, guided meditations on YouTube to help with this. Once you’ve gotten yourself into a meditative position and a quiet mindspace, imagine going somewhere in your mind. Open a door, go down or up stairs, climb a ladder - whatever feels right. Once you have done this, you will find yourself in a space.
This will feel like daydreaming, and it may not be entirely solid. But you can make it your own place, and over time, with practice, it will solidify. Fill it with furniture, paint the walls, fill the pantry with food. Invite your companions over. They may not feel tangible or may look/feel fuzzy. That’s okay - they’ll get more solid over time.
Ah - whoops! Surprise! You just did your first astral travel! Really! It was inside yourself, but it was real.
And since you were looking specifically for other people’s astral experiences, this blog is pretty cool, although it’s not active anymore.
Practice telepathy with your companion:
This is not going to be like telepathy in the movies at all. It’s a subtler form of communication, and if you struggle with it, you can always try other communication techniques like pendulums, tarot cards, and automatic writing.
Notice your thoughts throughout the day. If you have unusual, stray thoughts, if you catch your thoughts responding to themselves, if you have strange urges to look at or interact with things you might not normally interact with, these are all signs that your companion may be attempting telepathy with you.
Like meditation, sit in a quiet space and let your thoughts drift. Invite your companion to join you, and just let your mind go. Are there any ideas or thoughts that feel out of place? Anything that sounds like not your own internal voice?
This can be a very hard process, especially if you’re not using any other communication method. I personally learned to perform telepathy with my companions by first using a pendulum and alphabet board to talk with them. Eventually, I was able to recognize what voices sounded like “theirs,” and differentiate them from mine.
You can read my post on communication for more info on this!
Above all, I feel I need to emphasize this: Your practice does not have to look like anybody else’s who has written their experiences on the internet. It is allowed to be imperfect, unfocused, messy, and fun. A lot of people, myself included, sometimes go to great lengths to make it seem as though when they are astral traveling, they feel as though they are physically there. That level of immersion is very difficult to reach and can take years after years of practice. I am not even there, I promise you.
Anyway, now that I’ve written an Entire Novel, I hope this was helpful to you or to somebody! Thank you for asking!

You have multiple “bodies”. Bodies meaning centers of consciousness. You have a physical body, etheric body, astral body (higher astral body and a lower astral body), a mental body, and a casual body. When you sleep you leave the physical body and do many things and go many places. The reason you don’t remember your nightly projections is the bulk of your consciousness is in the physical body and remains there most of your life unless you consciously transfer it elsewhere.

what's seidir and how do you start out doing it?
Hey Nonny!
Seiðr (pronounced seeth-ur) is Norse magic that is rooted in astral travel, trancework, astral work, Wyrd (fate), and altered states to gain information, knowledge, and to project your will into manifestation.
The exact practices of Seiðr are lost to time, but we can piece together some idea of what might have been done using a historical understanding of pre-Christian practices in the region.
Seidr Today
We know that dance, drumming, and singing would have been used to reach altered states. Odin himself spoke of frenzied dance and Galdr (singing of magical tunes). Psychoactive herbs would have also been used - and local herbs would have been Bog Bilberry, Crowberry, Labrador Tea, Obligate Fly Agaric, and more. Not all psychoactive herbs necessarily produce extreme symptoms. Technically, even chamomile is psychoactive. Always use herbs with caution and with the input from a licensed medical professional.
My Experience with Seidr
I personally practice Seiðr by journeying into the astral, into different times (energy knows no time or distance), and to speak to different beings/deities on various planes for lessons and information that further my personal and spiritual growth.
I experience these things through meditative states and bilocation. Most people don’t know this but bilocation is probably the most common way of practicing trancework. A great way to start is with having a goal in mind with where you’re going and some basic protections or a Guide to accompany you. You can reach meditative states in a variety of ways. I personally do it by taking mugwort tea or a combination of mugwort and a Sativa cannabis (this isn’t required but I live in a legalized state) and then listening to drumming tracks specifically meant for meditation.
Other methods can include: listening to binaural beats, breathing exercises, and repetitive actions like spinning yarn, crocheting, knitting, etc (Fiber crafts were intimately entwined with magic for the Norse).
Dancing in a frenzied and free manner can also produce an altered state and is a favorite of Odin. Anytime I’ve been moved to dance for Seiðr though it’s been with Odin. 🤔 I’m not sure if the other Gods inspire dance the same way for anyone else. I only experience it with The Old Man.
Spae Work
Another type of Seiðr is called Spae which comes from the ancient root to speak. And this refers specifically to the practice of reaching into the Well of Knowledge or speaking to the Norns and speaking the truths that you learn into existence here.
A subgenre of Spae work is Skaldic work which involves reaching into that same well and speaking truth through story. This was the method by which we were gifted the original oral traditions that inspired the Eddas and the Sagas. The ones we have written down are Christianized fragments, but originally these would have had much less Christian propaganda flavor and were carried into Midgard on the silver tongues of Skalds.
This is getting long so I’ll wrap this up. I could literally talk about my Seiðr practice all day.
Remember with starting Seiðr…
Don’t overthink it! You can write down or record what you feel you’re experiencing as you’re experiencing it, which can help lend weight and value to what you are experiencing. .
Anything and everything you experience is valid, but discernment is important. Pay attention to the individual phenomenon, sensations, thoughts, and pieces of information you’re getting. Trust those are happening and avoid try to force-fit them into a conclusion. Analyze it later, not during so that details aren’t altered or changed subconsciously
Best of luck!
💙 Elisa

🍁Samhain🍁
🍁Samhain activities and traditions🍁
The air is changing, with a crisp smell of leaves and a wind that tickles your skin! This is the time of year where the veil is thinning. Autumn is coming and the sun is ready to rest. This is third harvest, and the last one. The meaning for Samhain (sow-in) is that summer has come to an end.
🧙♂️🧙♀️This time of year is also known as the witches new year. 🧙♀️🧙♂️
What is the veil? 🌫
During times of the year the veil can thin. We are coming up to Samhain, which means the veil is thinning. The veil is where the seen meets unseen, form meets spirit, known meets unknown. During meditation or rituals, you can find yourself gazing into a place between worlds. The reason it gets thinner is because there is a transition with the days getting shorter, nights getting longer. The natural world is withdrawing from the realm of life and growth. With this, the veil thins.
🎃 Set extra places at the dinner table for returning spirits, feast of the dead!
🎃 Samhain night is a great time for scrying
🎃 This is a good time for some reflection.
🎃 Meditation outside with fire and leaves! Or ground yourself.
🎃 Decorate your alter
🎃 Celebrate the cycle of life and death
🎃 Take a nature walk
🎃 Bonfire magick
🎃 visit a cemetery
🎃 Have a bonfire
🎃 Have a ritual to guide the dead home by opening the west facing window and putting a lit candle there.
🎃 Samhain ritual calling upon the gods and goddesess.
🎃 Clean or renovate a space in your house or room.
🎃 Write things you want to release in your life and burn that paper in a bonfire.
🎃 Connect with your spirit guides.
🍽Samhain food🍽
🥧Turnips, apples and apple cider, gourds, nuts, mulled wines, beef, pork, poultry, ale, bram brack (dark loaf or cake made with dried fruit), corn, mugwort tea, pumpkin, squash, and colcannon🥧
🍎 Apples- Cut an apple in half to see five seeds. This represents the pentacle. They are also divination tools. They are also considered the food of immortality.
🎃 Pumpkins, gords and turnups- Carve them and light them up! Tools for protection.
🌰 Walnuts, hazelnuts, and chestnuts- used for divination.
🥖 Bread and grain- using the harvest from mabon.
🌿 Rosemary- Dispells negative energy. Also used for remembering the dead. Amazing to put into your bread.

Witchcraft: Some Basic Terms to Know
ENERGY MANIPULATION:
GROUNDING— To ground is an exercise that is used to clear and release excess energy, as well as to renew the energies within oneself and clear out the old. Traditionally done by envisioning roots stretching out from oneself into the ground, like a tree, and connecting through them to the earth. However, it can be done with simple visualization, and does not need to include nature, as long as the cycling of energy is completed. Various techniques will be mentioned later.
CENTERING— Usually done after grounding. To center oneself is to organize and become aware of the energies within you, and overall be magically aware.
CLEANSE— To remove negative or unwanted energies, spirits, and imprints from an object or a space. There are a number of simple rituals and actions that are done to cleanse. This is often done to rid an object of past memories or uses, to make it spiritually new.
CHARGE— To infuse an object with personal or external power/energies/intent. There are vast many methods that can be used to charge an object, water, or crystal.
VISUALIZE— Similar to imagining, the intended conjuring of images in one’s mind that are accompanied by energy, and used to help conduct one’s intent.
INTENT— Your goal, or purpose behind casting a spell. The emotions and power within you that power the spell and bring about the effect of the spell.
BEWITCHED OBJECTS
CHARM— Any object that is worn or used that is meant to have magical effects on the holder/user.
AMULET— Usually a natural object, worn to ward off illness, evil, and possession. Often crystal-based, for protection.
TALISMAN— Typically gives power to the wearer, often a crafted object that has gone through a consecration ceremony.
MISC.
SABBAT—Witch festivals/holidays, based off the changing of the seasons and equinoxes. Wiccan influenced, celebration is not mandatory.
ESBAT— Full moon celebrations.

I hope this isn't rude, but I'm following a LOT of witch blogs. you being one of them. yet, when I look at the witch-related asks & answers for all of those blogs, other blogs are helpful and list spells and such. you just "no" whenever someone asks? Can I ask why you reject magic for a lot of your situations, considering you run a magic blog and are quite literally a creator of a magical how-to book?
simply because magic is not needed in every situation, nor is it advisable. recognizing when magic is and isn’t needed, or even a good idea is important in the life of the witch.
here are a couple of examples of such:
things i have answered “no” to today:
bewitching your significant other (consent issues anyone?)
bewitching a non-signif to find out personal things (consent again)
asked for a spell for communicating with spirits (just because a skill isn’t developed doesn’t mean a spell will replace experience)
weight loss spells (dangerous and against my personal morals)
however, the one outlier i include is this, because it’s important:
easily google-able question (as stated in previous posts, i encourage people to develop their own research skills so they can grow in their craft when they reach an area of their path where there isn’t someone around to hold their hand and slip them the answers)
as for your “other blogs are helpful and list spells and such”, i’d like to direct your attention to the many posts of lists and ~stuff~ i make for people. such as the:
