Start by standing in one spot with your feet shoulder-width apart and holding the ball out in front of you with both hands. Have a partner throw you passes from different angles while you are moving around the court. As soon as you catch the ball, square up to the basket and shoot it without hesitation.

3. Tip Drill: This drill helps you learn how to properly tip the ball when it’s close to going out of bounds. Have a partner stand out of bounds with their arms extended, holding the ball above their head. As they toss the ball back in towards the basket, tip it off the backboard so it goes back out towards them. Catch it on the fly and repeat. If done correctly, this drill will also help improve your timing and coordination.
- Defense Drills
To be a great basketball player, you need to have great defense. These defense drills will help you stay in front of your man and become a lock-down defender.
1. One-on-One Defense: The first drill is one-on-one defense. This is where you will learn how to stay in front of your man and not get beat off the dribble. You will need a partner for this drill. Start by getting in a defensive stance and have your partner try to dribble past you. As they try to dribble past you, stay in front of them and don't let them get by you. If they do get by you, reset the drill and try again.
2. Defensive Slides: The second drill is defensive slides. This drill will help you work on your lateral quickness and footwork. For this drill, you will need some cones or markers to set up a slalom course. Start at one end of the course and side shuffle to the other end, making sure to keep your feet wide the whole time. Once you reach the other end, turn around and shuffle back to the start. Repeat this for 10-15 reps.
3. Box Outs: The third drill is box outs. This is a very important skill for any post player or anyone who wants to rebound the ball effectively. For this drill, you will need someone to rebound the ball for you while you box out an imaginary opponent.

Can I make the School Team without being on an AAU team and Travel Basketball?
So, you’ve come here wondering “Can I make my schools basketball team without playing AAU?”. The short answer is yes, but it can be extremely difficult to do so without some sort of playing background.
On average, a High School basketball team roster carries between 12-15 players and only 5 of these players play at any one time. For some schools they can get 25-40 kids that try out for these teams.
Overall, as a player you have to be in the top 25% of players that try out to make the team for good. Most of the players that try out, either have played AAU basketball in the past or have played from a very young age. So, what can you do about it if you have never played AAU?

That’s like working a full-time job.
