Robert Mapplethorpe
Robert Michael Mapplethorpe (/ˈmeɪpəlˌθɔːrp/; November 4, 1946 – March 9, 1989) was an American photographer, best known for his black-and-white photographs. His work featured an array of subjects, including celebrity portraits, male and female nudes, self-portraits, and still-life images. His most controversial works documented and examined the gay male BDSM subculture of New York City in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A 1989 exhibition of Mapplethorpe's work, titled Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Moment, sparked a debate in the United States concerning both use of public funds for "obscene" artwork and the Constitutional limits of free speech in the United States.

If you woke up and realized you had traveled back in time and were in your high school self’s body but had all the memories and knowledge that you have now, what would you do?
How can we think about translanguaging as a beneficial tool in expressing ourselves on the AP test?
 How do you rework deficit thinking that Spanish isn’t allowed? 
What are all the levers of change that you can pull at different levels of the system?  In the classroom? In the school? In policy? How to support translanguaging at different structural levels? 
What should we do as educators when an authority in a higher position of power doesn’t value or presents roadblocks to translanguaging within the process? 
How can we think about teacher education toward translanguaging? What do we do when some teachers are taught that translanguaging is burden to them if they don’t speak the language?
what is our linguistic tool kit for replacing deficit-based talk with strengths based discourse?
what are the confounding variables — when does she most strongly feel this way?
How can we not necessarily position or put on a pedestal edited American English as the style that is most prized—how do we value other styles in the writing/mentoring context?
How do we value the type of verbal communication while transitioning to the paper if the putting it down is the stressful part?
How are we supporting mentees not with individual assignments but as writers and people more generally?
How can us as mentors, as opposed to teachers, best let the student know that the teacher is not the driving force of the writing?
How do we as mentors identify goals for students that transcend these individual assignments?
What are the linguistic strategies we have as mentors to help us with this dilemma?
Linguistic and discursive/interactional strategies. 
How should we scaffold their thinking and processes so they can develop and maintain skills to help mentees reach their goals?

If you were transported into the body of any character from a book/movie/tv show/etc. for one day and then were returned to your own world/timeline/body afterward, what character’s body would you choose to inhabit and why?
I think that if I were transported into the body of a fictional character I would choose Peter Pan.  Just the ability to fly would alone be enough to justify this choice.  I would soar over the treetops and the lagoon in Neverland and I’m sure for me it would bring back feelings of going on the Peter Pan ride at Disney World where you “flew” in a ship seeing all of Neverland before you.  And being Peter Pan would really be all about harnessing that kind of nostalgia.  Nostalgia for the innocence of childhood, the simplicity of play and fun, but also nostalgia for a time before coronavirus.  Now our world feels more like Alice in a topsy-turvey encounter than it does like Peter Pan. It seems that Peter Pan’s vivaciousness and indefatigable, if slightly naïve spirit, would be helpful in these dark days.
Today’s Central Question: As justice-driven writing teachers how do we value students’ myriad linguistic resources, support their linguistic dexterity, and value linguistic pluralism while also teaching students how to navigate multiple audiences, purposes, and contexts?
Affordances of some languages, codes, registers, etc…..what can you say with some linguistic registers that you can’t say in a standardized form?
Why is it the assumption that we should be the ones to control mentee’s navigation through linguistic terrain?

Lion Feuchtwanger
Lion Feuchtwanger (7 July 1884 – 21 December 1958) was a German-Jewish novelist and playwright. A prominent figure in the literary world of Weimar Germany, he influenced contemporaries including playwright Bertolt Brecht.
Feuchtwanger's Judaism and fierce criticism of the National Socialist German Workers Party, years before it assumed power, ensured that he would be a target of government-sponsored persecution after Adolf Hitler's appointment as chancellor of Germany in January 1933. Following a brief period of internment in France and a harrowing escape from Continental Europe, he found asylum in the United States, where he died in 1958.

WIth mentees - strengths-based means that we are building on the awesome genius that is already there. Be vigilant about how to support people to the fullest extent!  How to build skills and build on strengths? Discovering the awesome genius of mentees. Point out the seeds of powerful ideas in their writing. Being supporting is central to this work. Encouragement leads to building writerly identities and not just writing. Getting words on page is central to building writers. Writing mentoring is about being with our writers during the process of writing. The professional development of us is so important.  We must not forget what we need to do to reflect back on our mentoring process. Dialogue is central to this work. In dialogue, the mentee can converse with you, explore different ideas, figure out the words that they are trying to say and put it on the page. Synchronous conversations are central. Productivity can look like ideas being developed together. Text-based or content-based writing that talking about the reading is actually writing.  It might not seem like writing process but it is. "Building upon the idea of dialogue a bit, I think one central idea about it is the dissolving of the power dynamic. Feedback changes from attempting to please an authority without any real connection to conversing with a peer about how to improve and develop what their working on. It's no longer just throwing ideas into the void hoping that it fulfills a set of demands."
Dilemma: How to separate my writing style from my mentees.  How to develop their style without pushing my own style onto mentees. Dilemmas: The instinct is often to go to fixing things and changing writing, how to work against that instinct — active listening is one strategy, what are others? Dilemma 3: How to improve writing without interrupting the writer’s creative vision? Dilemma 4: How do I help to improve writing that I am not entirely familiar with (e.g. comics) Dilemma 5: How do we deal with things in the creative writing that are uncomfortable for one reason or another — how to avoid judgement when mentoring "Yup, mentor texts have pretty much all I've been able to do at this point. The hardest thing has been commenting on worldbuilding and plot development that tries to follow or sometimes even deviate from the norms of the genre." Dilemma 6: How do you go about mentoring and assuring that what the mentee is saying fits the assignment without doing the work yourself? Dilemma 7: Power dynamics between mentor and mentee - how to navigate the conversation for equity of talk in the dialogue.
Ask your mentee what kind of feedback do you want here? Some choices might be: 1) tell me what is good 2) give me critical feedback for surface issues 3) probe with me to think about deep surface issues 4) tear apart a small section in every way and then let me figure out how to go from there. 5) talk about just problems experiencing as readers

EMILE BOCIAN IN CHINATOWN
Emile Bocian photographed Chinatown from 1974 to 1986, a period of extreme transition for the community. During the 1980s, the neighborhood saw rapid growth due to an influx of immigrants from Guangdong and Hong Kong. The New York Chinese community has continued to evolve and grow, expanding into Chinatowns in Brooklyn (Sunset Park) and Queens (Flushing).
Bocian used to tell actress Mae Wong that he was taking pictures of the streets of Chinatown because he thought they would be a valuable reference, and he hoped to return in the future to document the changes. He was unable to complete that task in his lifetime, but images displayed here reveal the present-day appearance of selected sites.
