Rewatching s1e2 and finally understand why the thing that finally got through to Jake was Holt's comment about how the deputy commissioner bailing his son out shows how little he cares about him... I love how this is a subtle way to show the audience that there's more to Jake's character, but it's also a subtle way for Holt to let Jake know that the reason he's on his case for his sloppy work is because he actually cares about him

Rosa: Your existence is confusing. Charles: How so? Rosa: Your presence is annoying, but the thought of anything bad happening to you upsets me.
