$50,000 for abortion funds by 1/1/2025
Organizers I really respect have launched a campaign that I wanted to share about. I've mostly seen it on Bluesky so far, but I thought people on Tumblr might be interested. There are many worthwhile causes to throw financial support to right now: I hope you'll consider if this one makes sense for you!
Local abortion funds in the USA are experiencing a severe funding shortage. Can you help by donating the cost of at least one drink (or more) by January 1? Or share with your friends and networks?
People across the country are aiming to collectively raise $50,000 to donate to over 90 abortion funds through the National Network of Abortion Funds by January 1 2025. Local abortion funds offer vital financial support to help people who need assistance paying for their abortion, whether that's the cost of the procedure itself or associated costs like travel and housing (with these costs getting higher and higher as more states pass abortion bans and restrictions).
Donations will be split between 90+ independent local abortion funds, many of which are run by VOLUNTEERS, and bring decades of experience to the hard work of providing logistical and financial access to abortion care for marginalized people. As of 12/25, the campaign is $20,000 of the way there.
More information about abortion funds and why they matter below under the cut—but if you're already convinced, you can take part here. Gifts of any size make a difference!
Why local abortion funds?
Because they’re made up of local organizers and advocates, they’re the best experts on navigating the landscape of shrinking abortion access, with decades of collective wisdom and practice getting people over many types of barriers and to the abortions they seek.
The people most affected by legal and logistical barriers to abortion access are folks of color, people who face documentation barriers, transgender and gender nonconforming people, and other people who are routinely denied access to healthcare.
Funds were seeing doubled call volume before the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision. It’s only increased since then. Abortion funds need more $ to act in these unprecedented times.
Abortion fund leaders published an open letter in The Nation about what they’re up against. Here are 3 of the many points they made:
“Local funds know their unique community needs best and work tirelessly to meet them through case management, emotional support, arranging travel and logistical support, and directly covering the costs of abortion care."
“Abortion funds exist because governmental and political systems have failed our communities—primarily Black, Indigenous and Native, immigrant, rural, and low-income—and abandoned us in times of need."
"Without the ability of those at the grassroots to sustainably do their work, the already fragile abortion access landscape is at risk, and abortion seekers are positioned to lose the most."
Local abortion funds need more support and help. Let’s each do what we can to help resource them.
