So after seeing Nico Hischier yapping at Leon tonight and the beat writers saying they were yelling in German, I’m wondering if Leon would be able to understand much of what he said? I am not a German speaker but I heard that most Germans can barely understand Swiss German.

Ohhhh, what a great question, anon. Don’t ask me questions about languages, I could talk about this for hours. In fact, I used your ask as an excuse to go and watch some Nico Hischier clips (for research purposes only ofc *cough cough* jk, I’ve read a few Nicojack fics recently because I was starved for content and now I’m suddenly, for some reason, very fond of Nico Hischier) and the answer is, I’m conflicted.

The thing is, I talk to a lot of Swiss people in my job and Swiss-German people generally are able to speak Hochdeutsch “High German” very well in my experience. Nico does too, like in this interview with the German NHL YT channel. It’s typically something Swiss Germans can just “turn on and off”. Most of the time, when I’m talking to a Swiss person (a Swiss German, that is, don’t forget that there are parts of the population in Switzerland that speak French or Italian too!) they will immediately clock that I’m German and start speaking Hochdeutsch perfectly. And Nico does have a strong Swiss accent when he’s speaking Hochdeutsch, so I definitely wouldn’t think he’s German, but I can understand him perfectly in that interview.

In other videos, specifically for Swiss media outlets (like this interview here) when Nico is speaking actual Swiss German, he is much harder to understand for me. I really have to listen closely and even then I don’t get everything he’s saying. It does feel a little like listening to Dutch, in that way. It kind of “sounds” like my language when I’m not actively trying to listen, but it takes an effort to actually understand what’s being said.

Long story short, if it’s true that Leon and Nico were yelling at each other in German, then I’m sure Leon understood what Nico was saying, because I would assume Nico would speak High German (is it just me or does this sound really offensive lol) with Germans instead of Swiss German.

Living as a resident in these states means you are protected by state's rights and state government to continue or begin receiving trans healthcare. These laws have been codified in their states so everything has been a-ok'd by their state governments.
