My Name is Elizabeth Lowrey. I am a Junior Psychology major and hope to pursue a Masters in Social Work. Team #35 , Non-Newtonians “An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate those who do.” These are the 2 questions I will be answering in this blog. 1. How might your field or domain change, morph, or disappear with the advent of the singularity? 2. Based on your answer to the first question, what would, could, should, or might you do to prepare for it?

What to do
Even though it might be difficult to implement or find a system that works for the field I think it is important for people to accept that the way we work is changing. Some for the good and some for the bad. If it is going in this direction we need to make sure we understand and know how to use technology the most efficient way.

National newsmagazine committed to enhancing the entire social work profession by exploring its difficult issues, new challenges, proud past, and current successes.
"Just because many industries in the corporate sector have embraced computerized records does not mean such a switch is as easy in social work. For example, it is difficult to codify social work services in a way that can be easily entered and tracked in a computerized system. It’s one thing for Walmart to use technology to track each jar of pickles it has in stock, but social work is something “you can’t put in a jar.” - Dale Fitch
There is much resistance in the field. It is not because they don't think it is a good idea, but because the way it is step up for other companies and organization won't be as efficient for the social work field. The technology is here it is just a matter of how it is implemented and integrated.

Communicating is key in the field of social work. There is already technology out there like Skype that allows us to communicate with someone miles away. This technology is already in many offices around the world. If it were implemented along with other technologies in the social work field it could make the field more efficient. There is already technology out there that needs to be implemented to get to this idea of singularity to happen in more fields of work.

Typist of the Future
This picture shows how far we have come. This is what people thought we would be doing. Instead we have computers as phones and much more. Singularity has already been happening it is just a matter of time for more new things to come into the market and progress us even further. I believe that people just need to be careful with what they are getting into. Taking a risk is something people have to do, but knowing what can happen by taking that risk is just as important.

Having technology take over certain aspects of the field might even cause random dancing in the office. Making it an even happier place to be.

I believe the advent of singularity in the field of social work will help the field and will not cause the end of this kind of work. I think more social workers will have more time to focus on clients and patients rather the paper work and technology side of the job. Technology could not fully take over this job, but it can take over some aspects. Technology will allow social workers to spend more time with clients.
Many people in the field do not get a lot of free time or down time. Technology could benefit how efficient they are during the day so they can come home and not worry about work. These steps toward a singularity in the field can not only benefit in work life, but can help with home life and emotional well-being.

We say Singularity is here and will help, but how is it helping 3rd world countries
We say we have all this great technology and we are the generation that will change everything, yet we have situations in the world that are worse off than before. We might have the technology to better fields of work in the US and other 1st world countries, but people who don't have money or countries that are not progressing will never see this benefit. How can we be so accepting and excited about something that could possibly increase unemployment rates, cause less human interaction and not actually fix the true problems we have going on in our society and around the world. I think the advancement of technology is the key to our future, but there is much more than just technology that is important to our future. Technology and singularity is not the answer to most of the pressing issues we have in our world today. Most are band aids to make sure the problem is contained.

This article is about how singularity is already here and being integrated into our way of life. Most of it is entertainment e.g. iPhone, iPad, Kindle. This technology might seem like a hug step because we are use to it, but if you think about how far we have come with technology it is crazy. To think this is where we are today just shows how far we will keep going. And singularity will be even more integrated into our systems.
The downside to this new technology is that it will always be expensive. While some countries progress others won't have enough money for any of it. It won't happen everywhere and not all fields of work will have technology integrated because the money won't be there to progress.

Welcome to a world through Glass.
The idea behind Google Glass would be an example of a balance of technology integrated into a system. If Google Glass were to be used in my field it would be beneficial. There would be person to person contact and dealing with documents and paperwork would be much faster and efficient. Having the technology on you can help with how much a social worker could get done everyday. Technology can not fully take over this field, but if there were a balance more could be done. Social Workers do not have it easy. They have a lot of cases to deal with during the day and even more paperwork to go with it. Having more efficient technology integrated in would allow social workers to get more done during the day and maybe have time to work on getting a pay raise. Economically Social Works don't get paid enough for their hard work. If they could get more done during the day and not have to worry about little details that technology can fix then as a group they might be able to fight for better wages.

Technology can't give a hug to a person they are helping. It might be able to talk to you and calm you down, but it won't ever be able to give people physical touch. Social workers are hands on people who I am sure have given hugs to many people they have helped.

What would happen if technology took over my field?
If my domain were to change because of technology I think the field would crumble. There would need to be balance. More advance technology could help with the parts of the job that take social workers away from the people. The job entails a lot of paper work and many other document heavy tasks. Having technology that could help social workers have more time with the people they are trying to help would be more efficient and beneficial. If technology were to totally take over the field it wouldn't be as personal. There is an aspect of compassion and human contact that is needed. Technology can't do that. Even if you say, what if technology could do that someday, I do not believe if would really help. No matter what human contact will always be better then technology that is acting human like.

One of the things that make me happy is helping others. I have always had a gift for helping and being there for friends and family. As I have gotten older I have realized I want to help more than just close friends. I want to help those who don't have anyone to stand up for them, people who don't have families to take care of them, people who haven't felt loved. I know it is not an easy career and I won't make a lot of money, but it is something I want to pursue. Having the drive to help others and the patients for dealing with hard situations will help me pursue this goal.

Who am I am what do I want to do with my life
I am a junior psychology major and geography minor at Texas A&M University. I plan to pursue a Masters in Social Work when I graduate in May 2014. I hope to become a Medical Social Worker. I have always been interested in the medical field, but never wanted to be a Doctor or Nurse like my parents. This field of study seemed perfect for me.

People are afraid that technology taking over is a bad thing. Like everything in life there should be a balance. The idea of singularity is scary, but it will happen sooner rather than later. I don't believe it could turn out like this picture, but if taken to the extreme we might not even run our own lives anymore. Having technology integrated into our system of living is Darwinism at its best, but precautions must be taken.
