Request: OMG I’m so happy to see that the requests are open again! I want to say that I LOVE your writing and I was wondering if you could do a Steve x reader smut where they have a strained relationship but then they have to share a bed during an undercover mission and that leads to sex, possibly with rough/Dom!Steve after all the tension (maybe they had to pretend they were a couple for the mission or something). Feel free to change this if you want I trust your writing genius :)

I want to see how many people are out there who still want redemption for him, like me.

The weird thing about Grant Ward is that the show went to a lot of trouble to make him a sympathetic villain and, in season 2, to set up the beginnings of a redemption arc. He has a backstory where he was abused as a child by sadistic family members, and we’re shown multiple characters purposefully shaping him into a villain despite his better nature (perfectly exemplified with the scene where he has to kill his dog). He has his positive qualities established prior to his betrayal, and many (if not most) are qualities that remain even once his villainy is revealed (the negative/evil qualities are just added to those, twisting them). And at the end of season 1/beginning of season 2 there are two details that are very explicitly stressed: he doesn’t have any personal animosity toward the team, even caring deeply about at least some of them (albeit in a twisted way that leads to him still betraying them utterly), and he is NOT actually Hydra- he is complicit with Hyrda, works for them, furthers their plans yes. Which is terrible. But he himself does not hold to Hydra ideology. 

Then season 2 sets up a redemption arc, he’s kept close to the team, he regrets hurting them, he became suicidal after his betrayal, he promises never to lie to Skye, he actively tries to help the team, he is bent on helping Kara recover her life, he expresses regret. He even shows himself to be much more understanding and accepting of Skye’s new powers than most of the team. It seems like he’s on the path to at least becoming a rogue anti-hero. 

But then this path is suddenly aborted (it was either a red herring or they changed their minds) and Ward is sent to work for Hydra again in season 3 (in an act of inconsistent characterization. Despite all this, it wouldn’t be nearly as strange or frustrating, if it weren’t for the attitude of “why would anyone like ward?” taken by much of the cast and producers/writers.

They worked hard to create a sympathetic villain, started establishing a redemption arc and then act shocked and scornful when people find him sympathetic and expected a redemption arc.
