The small chirps that came from the little insect would have before been such a wondrous thing for the boy. He would have taken the little cricket and called out to his mother and father that the little cricket was trying to talk to him. But Geppetto wiped his tears and dug the heels of his feet into the mud. “I don't....” He shook his head trying to figure out what the other was saying.
“I want them back... I want my mama and papa back...someone was there at the house. I recognized his face. I saw him there. And there was someone else. He took the things that were my mama and papa...I know he did. He took them away.” He wanted to figure out what had happened but all he could really think about was that he was alone. There was no warm smile when he would enter his home nor would there be a savoury smell of broth from his mama's cooking. Â
He ran his fingers through his hair then buried his face in his knees. Holding his legs close to his chest, he began to rock and sing a lullaby his mother use to sing to him when he was afraid. Geppetto didn't want to be afraid  but the song wasn't working. It brought little streaks of tears down his face. “Why did ...how come? Why? If I would have stayed with them then....we'd all be together...wouldn't we? If I would have stayed with them and whatever happened to them happened to me too then, we would have all been together....”
Oh, if only he could. He would give anything to grant Gepetto’s wish; the wish they shared. The boy needed his parents, and Jiminy would do anything for them to be reunited. But it didn’t work that way. He couldn’t undo what he’d done, all he could do was be here for the boy now. So he shook his head, chest aching from the sorrow and guilt of knowing Gepetto would never again have his parents. “I cannot. I am so sorry,” he whispered, which came out as a faint chirp.
But, he had to let Gepetto know what he was here to do. That he was here to help him to the best of his ability. But, how? He couldn’t even speak to the boy; he couldn’t help him. None-the-less indicate that he wanted to help him. Jiminy flew a little closer, looking up at the boy’s tear stained face. And he wanted nothing more than to fly away, to leave the boy to grieve in peace and to try to wrestle with his own guilt. But he couldn’t abandon Gepetto. So he stayed, trying not to let his emotions overwhelm him. Everything he was feeling would be so much worse for the boy, after all. Besides the guilt, that was.
“I cannot grant your wish. But, I want to help you. I’m not going to leave you, Gepetto.” He knew the boy couldn’t understand what he was saying, but perhaps he could understand the meaning behind the chirps. If not, Jiminy would try something else. He’d try, until Gepetto understood. He would try his hardest, because Gepetto needed someone to be there for him. Even if it was just one, tiny cricket.

He couldn't really believe what had happened. There was going to be soup and bread. They were all going to eat. It hadn't even been that long but he felt as if his memories were beginning to fade. They weren't it just hurt too much to remember the good times he had. When he had gotten home there was no sweet smell from the broth. All the little boy could recall was silence, the silence he heard when he walked into his home. His mother wasn't laughing and his father hadn't been humming a song as he always did.
There was just silence and that ate up at him. He couldn't' stay at home, not with the silence that kept running across the small rooms. If he pretended long enough then maybe his parents might come back but after a day, two days he knew nothing was gonna change.
Geppetto marched to the pond every day and stared at the tadpoles that swam by. He would pick up a few stones and remember when his father had brought him there. Geppetto was playing along the water while his father attempted to fish. “Papa....” He furrowed his brows and brought his knees closer to his chest then began to throw stones in an attempt to release some of his own frustration.
The little boy heard something from closer to the ground, his eyes were red and his cheeks were flushed. “Hello....” He sniffled and turned back to hold himself once more, “Are you here to grant my wish?”
Jiminy really had not thought his request through. Sure, he’d been able to escape his parents to go find Gepetto. However, since becoming an insect, he’d had more near death encounters per day than in the rest of his life combined. Birds trying to eat him, people swatting him away, and hidden spider webs were challenges he hadn’t thought he would ever have to worry about. But, none of these things could stop him on his quest to find Gepetto.
It had been about a week since … that night. So Gepetto couldn’t have gotten much farther than this. Unless the boy had gone in a different direction; meaning Jiminy would have to backtrack and check a different way. At least by now he’d gotten the hang of flying, and his search should go much quicker. But the world was huge, and Jiminy was starting to doubt if a name and appearance would do him much good, especially when he had no way to communicate with others. He was essentially looking for a needle in a haystack.
Which was why the cricket was absolutely shocked when he accidently stumbled upon the boy. He’d been flying by a lake, knowing the water there was clean from past journeys and wanting to get a drink before continuing on his way. But there was Gepetto, sitting by the lake, tossing rocks in and disturbing it’s smooth surface. Perhaps he was tossing rocks for the purpose of disturbing its surface, so the water better reflected his own mood. Just the thought made Jiminy’s heart break even more.
He approached the boy slowly; guilt eating at him. But he had to guide Gepetto, he had no one else. So Jiminy landed near him, and chirped. Hopefully Gepetto wouldn’t try to squash him; he had said he liked crickets, after all. He held his umbrella; or, the boy’s umbrella, out in front of him, hoping he’d see it and know the cricket in front of him was intelligent. Perhaps he’d even realize who Jiminy was. It would be better for Gepetto to find that out now rather than later, even if Jiminy didn’t want the boy to hate him. “Hello, Gepetto,” he sighed, knowing the boy would only hear the rather loud chirps of a cricket, and not his words. “I’m so, so sorry.

"I make things, like chairs, tables, wardrobes. " The older man was quite proud of himself, "But I do dabble in toy making, a little."
"What do you sell here then? Puppets? Old trinkets?" James asked with small interest as he looked at the small trifles in the shop.Â

'Sweetheart, you'd be just fine because you're an excellent mother. And my wonderful ----daughter in law.'
"Kiernan really likes you. You make him smile. How'd you learn to communicate without words?"
"It’s all in the kisses, and of course just laughing."

He nodded , his head. "I have most of that in my tool box. I don't sell it but you can visit the small hardware shop nearby."
"Needle. Thread. Scissors." James stated absentmindedly as he looked at the different trinkets. "Anything to make a hat."
