Yaodong 窰 (in native Jin Chinese) or 窰洞 (in Mandarin) Is a particular form of earth shelter dwelling common in the Loess Plateau in China's northern provinces, Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Ningxia.

The history of Yaodong goes back centuries, and they continue to be used. As of the early 2000s, between 30 and 40 million people in northern China still lived in Yaodongs, a number rapidly decreasing as millions move to more modern dwellings nearby or move away as part of urbanization in China.

Tour of the Guqin workshop/studio where I'm learning.

My teacher rents this large house out in the countryside of Yangzhou (China), the front area is the kitchen and practice area, the back are the work rooms to make Guqin.

In southern China there's no heating in the buildings (of course you can install your own heater) so only the main practice room and the dormitories upstairs have temp control machines (they warm the room in winter and cool the room in summer, but the area they can reach is limited). It's usually about 5-15C during the daytime and -10-0C at night. Normally we just wear our winter jackets + insulation layers indoors. If you're working in the back, digging the wood or shaving it down, you don't feel cold.

I've been told in summer Yangzhou can get up to almost 40C, and with no AC in the work rooms you sweat buckets O.O;; I'm someone who starts feeling hot at anything over 25C, so...should be interesting this summer.

I’m sick to death of hearing “see! Accessibility benefits everyone, not just disabled people/mobility aid users/chronically ill people/etc!!” That shouldn’t matter. Even if the only people in the world that would benefit from an accommodation are disabled people, we still deserve it. I’m sick of non-disabled people constantly being centred and catered to with accessibility content. Every time someone makes an add-on to a post about an accessibility device or whatever, it just feels like they’re saying that our needs aren’t enough to warrant accommodations, it has to benefit non-disabled people too. We deserve accommodations no matter if non-disabled people can benefit from it.
