I was thinking about character and shipping playlists recently (I'm team "songs that remind me of the character" and not "songs they would listen to" because I want to be able to enjoy the playlist myself lol) and I was wondering about their history.

I'm assuming they've always existed, with people making mixtapes for all kinds of things, but were they commonly shared with wider fandom? I know fanvids used to be very difficult to share, but I guess one could publish it in a zine, via mailing list or on a web shrine. Or is sharing playlists publicly a newer thing?

There's a Miami Vice zine that would come with a mixtape of songs chosen by the individual fic authors as the soundtrack to their fics.

I think sharing fanmixes really took off in the early 00s with the availability of easy music piracy via limewire and such. People would zip these downloads of the whole mix and make a journal post with the song list and reasons for including each or some other bit of info with each plus the link to the zip file.

My girlfriend reminds me that people used to screencap their winamp playlists, partly to show off their cheesy custom anime skins.

If fanmixes were big in the 90s, I wasn't aware of it, but I also might just not have known. Certainly, mix tapes were big during the whole cassette era outside of fandom. Video editing was relatively hard to do. You could get two VCRs or various specialty equipment, but it was expensive, and only a few people did it. But lots of people had tape decks with two tapes where you could record from one to the other. Audio editing was a lot more accessible. I don't know if fandom did a ton of mixtape trading outside of that one Miami Vice zine, but it would have been relatively easy technologically compared to many things.

Sam course corrects like a champ, catching herself on the door jamb and lingering there for just a second, just long enough to rethink her approach, tonguing her molars like she does. Probably she doesn’t notice Brooke noticing.

“Pebbles and I are gonna have a problem pretty soon,” says Sam, finally entering the bedroom proper. “Absolutely heinous that the Bennetts leave her out there barking so long.”

So, the thing that strikes me about comic Nico and Karolina is how off their timing has always been. They have a lot of tension and a lot of complicated feelings for each other, but one of their main issues has always been timing.

In the first volume, as Karolina was struggling with her sexuality and discovering her feelings for Nico, Nico was in a relationship with Alex. It was not the right timing.

Then, on volume 2, when Karolina confesses, Nico turns her down, saying she doesn’t think she is into girls, or that at the very least she wants to be alone at the moment. Nico had never thought about being with a girl, and she is still hurting from Alex’s betrayal. It was not the right timing.

Immediately after this, Xavin shows up and takes Karolina to space with them, something Nico does NOT react well to. She is angry and upset. She even wants to use the staff of one to make Karolina come back, but Gert doesn’t let her.

In the following weeks, we learn just how badly she has been missing Karolina as Chase finds Nico going through the blonde’s clothes:

Not even the death of their parents or Alex has hurt Nico this badly before. I think this is when she starts to realize that she has feelings for Karolina. Even more, I think she was about to tell her once she came back to Earth:

She thought she wouldn’t have to be alone anymore, but…

Karolina was with Xavin now (which Nico was NOT happy about). Once again, it was not the right timing.

Even so, their relationship continues to be extremely complicated as Karolina still has feelings for Nico and Nico feels jealous of Xavin (aaand they are best friends. It is freaking complex):

Eventually, as Xavin leaves for space again, Nico seems to decide to give Karolina some time to heal, even as she tries to grow closer to her (aaaand flirt with her):

However, it seems that Nico waits too much (their timing is off once more). Julie Powers makes her move before Nico can, and soon Murderworld happens and the Runaways are all scattered.

Then, comes the Rainbow Rowell volume. They reunite, and that heart cup breaking in issue 3 is very telling. Nico tries to kiss Karolina in issue 5, but Karolina stops her, tells her she is with Julie (wrong timing, wrong timing, wrong timing). They are back to being best friends, but Nico longs for something she can’t have (she never seems to be able to have it):

And then, Karolina and Julie break up. And if it seems like Nico sort of rushes to confess to Karolina, hell yeah, that’s exactly what she does. There has been too much miscommunication, bad timing, confusion, and unspoken words between them for her to wait too long. She has learned that timing is not their forte. She has her window now, and for all she knows, it may close suddenly and unexpectedly. So Nico tells Karolina how she feels, and after years of longing, of wondering how it might be, they are finally together:

SOFT MOMENTS feat. ASIAN WLW

Happy Pride to all my Asian LGTBQ+ identifying women who love women! We’ve had a good few years in media, but more representation is always needed and welcome, not just for Asians, but all queer women of color, trans women, BLACK WOMEN, BLACK TRANS WOMEN. Shout outs to the HAPAs! Not just the half white HAPAs, but the half-black, half-latinx, half-indigenous HAPAs who often feel erased and not Asian enough on top of being queer. We see you! 

Please note, I included all of Asia geographically (not just East Asia) since West Asia and even South Asia are often separated into Indians/Arabs/Middle Eastern people. This was a good excuse for me to sneak in Arthie, Kadena, Circumstance, and I Can’t Think Straight.

maiden queen + celebrities AU + fake relationship

(On Regina Mills) “She’s … a monster come to life.” - Marian Knighton dishes on ex-husband’s new arm-candy.

Marian almost spits out her yogurt when she reads the headline. She’d learned a while back that reading her own press could be nothing but detrimental to her mental health, but when the article flashes up on her homepage, she’s clicking the link before she can even stop herself. She’d wondered why the hell a reporter was asking her about Mills, but she’d never imagined that her words (“She’s an incredible actress; I love her in Red as a Rose. I’ve never seen someone so adept at making a monster come to life.”) could be twisted in such a ludicrous way.

“Is it worth suing for libel?” she asks her agent, and he hems and haws and tells her this is just par for the course, that she should be more careful with her words next time, and she reluctantly accepts it.

Hollywood is cutthroat even if the people in it aren’t. She’s just never felt it quite so personally before.

Little does she know, her “feud” with Regina Mills is only getting started.

Hello, Regina.

The Evil Queen’s last encounter with Ursula.

I actually think “We Are Both” might be one of my favorite episodes of OUaT.

And what the episode does is lay out Rumpelstiltskin’s manipulation of Regina almost impossibly clearly. Regina’s first brush with using magic rids her of her abuser–can you imagine a more heady feeling than that? Than the excision of the most toxic thing in your life? And this man who gave you this, who exposed you to thing that freed you–he promises magic can do more.

Imagine being a teenage girl and thinking–as we later find out–maybe, just maybe, you can bring back the man you loved, that in addition to escaping your mother you can escape a marriage you never consented to and your suffocating stepdaughter. Imagine that option swimming before your eyes: freedom and love, the two things you never had growing up and you desperately craved.

I don’t want to deprive Regina of the agency she had in making the choices she did on the way to darkness. She chose darkness. But sometimes in context, and the way Rumple laid these things out, it doesn’t seem like a choice at all, you know?

And what this episode highlights for me especially, is that there is no one better suited to understand Rumple’s plan to turn Emma’s heart to darkness than Regina. Killian may have a long history with Rumple too, but this specific, almost misogynistic habit of Rumple’s in turning women to dark magic, in manipulating them for his own purposes: that’s something that Regina understands.

Regina has gone further down that road than anyone, and she’s also the only one to come back from it. I will be sorely disappointed if we don’t see payoff for that unique position of empathy at the end of this season.
