The first of my Japanese horror related presents from my partner! First up is Shiver: Junji Ito Selected Stories! 

I’m not the biggest fan of reading manga online if it’s something that I’m really passionate about. So it was great to get this and the perfect time to reread Fashion Model and The Long Dream with those two coming up in the new anime. There’s also a new fashion model short story (like 4 pages short), which is neat to have.

The best part of the collection though are the commentaries written by Ito himself to cap each story. Honestly, I could buy a book of nothing but these they’re so interesting. Add to that his sketches and initial story notes and it’s like reading pure creativity… and an encouraging reminder that execution is everything.

I’m most surprised how slap dash many of his ideas are at first, a hodge podge of random thoughts Ito had that particular week turned in to nightmares. It makes Ito all the more endearing seeing his rough pre-production work, reading the final product and concluding with a kind of self assessment. Naturally it’s also fantastic to see all of the art in its full glory too.
