Yeah, I think you're right given the spacing between the keys. I just thought that since Dipper, Mabel and Soos activated the keys simultaneously there had to be some catch to them.
(Sorry to have replied after such a long time, heh...)
The three keys
So, uh… I might be a little confused now, but who is the third person who could supposedly shut down the portal?
If Ford built that switch, then two of the people would most probably be Ford and Fiddleford. Bill couldn’t possibly turn that switch unless he has a physical body other than Ford’s (both of them). So who was the third key for?
Moreover, if Ford shut the portal down after that confrontation with Bill, he probably did it automatically (if there’s something manual there must be something automatic as well, probably using the board/computer).
Am I missing something with the keys?

Some love for this adorable elf-nerd, Stanford Pines Inspired by this http://youtu.be/wx6_MWVHZ4g since I haven't seen Ford's version on YouTube. Don't know if it's been done before... So proud of it since I finally figured some cool things in Vegas and I'm a slow editor so it took some time to get it done. It's my finished thing, yay :3

You know, a recent tumblr post got me thinking
Each of the journals have a different feel, a different emotional theme, as they took place at different points of Ford’s research and emotional stability.
The first journal is Ford curious and eager, excited to explore the mysteries all around him. This is him at the purest part of his research in Gravity Falls, full of hope and happiness. This journal goes to Stanley
Its a sad contrast to what the incident made Stanley go through. Imagine him, sad and alone with nothing but his brothers happy written word to keep him company. I can almost imagine him reading it and laughing at parts saying “That is so sixer”. The most it and him share is the feeling of hope.
The second one is the more dangerous. We have seen many times that despite being full of information that is for the most part correct, it’s contents are well, rather scary. Especially the recently revealed possession spell. This is because the knowledge is Bill’s. This is Bill pouring what he wants or is ok with Ford knowing into the journal. Therefore the book has a darker and more sinister undertone then the others. This journal is found by Gideon (whether that was on his own or with help is now coming into question).
This is probably the best matched book. Gideon’s violent, possessive and cruel nature allows him to have no moral objection to a lot of the darker and more evil spells and items detailed in the journal. It also matches him in the desperation for knowledge. And as we all know, knowledge is power.
Book three is Ford at his worst. Paranoid and scared. It has been several years since his mind scaring experience with the portal and the betrayal of Bill. And what makes it worse is Fiddleford’s state as a mentally defective recluse and the creation of the blind eye society. As such, the writing is much more conservative and defensive. Ford doesn’t know who he can trust, and has no one left to turn to. This is found by Dipper.
At first it doesn’t really match him. Yeah Dipper and the book’s writing are both paranoid, but wouldn’t it make more sense if he had the first book? But then the season’s continue. How many times have we seen Dipper beaten down by the world around him, slowly growing more defensive and conservative, to the point were he doesn’t even really trust his sister any more, the one person he stated in the first episode he could always trust. He is so scarred by the stuff that has happened that he almost turns the memory gun on a person he deeply admires. And thats the clincher. Dipper possessing journal three is a huge foreshadowing of his characters development. And I’m afraid if it gets too much worse, he may really do what the book says and trust no one. Maybe not even himself (I mean did u hear his thoughts in the last mabelcorn there is no way Bill wasn’t at least partially involved with that)

Where did Mabel's goodness go?
So pretty much everybody has noticed Mabel becoming ‘meaner’ in the latter episodes (herself included), more precisely after Ford’s coming. I think it has something to do with the changing dynamic in the Pines household and the way it has affected her:
Dipper: The two have been best friends since ever. Moreover, due to Dipper being more socially awkward than Mabel, he depended more on Mabel’s attention than vice-versa, and didn’t have someone else to compare her to. With him suddenly being on the same wavelength as Ford, there is newfound tension. Mabel is no longer the only person Dipper turns to (in some matters, she is completely kept in the dark). Moreover, to Dipper, Mabel making fun of him seems out of place compared to Ford's praising, but Mabel has never thought of herself as mean. Her old attitude is suddenly seen as inadequate, and she doesn't know what to do to fix this.
Stan: Since Dipper is now spending time with Ford, Mabel has found her 'twin' in Stan. Obviously, Stan is not the best influence - he makes mean remarks, has no problem with crimes, and his first reaction is to punch something in the face. Of course, Stan would do everything for his family, which Mabel has shown as well. But without Dipper as a foil, she identifies more with Stan, and may have picked up some of his traits.
Ford: Mabel may have two problems with Ford: his relationship with Dipper, and his relationship with Stan. Like I've said before, Ford has taken Dipper away from her, and shaken the two's almost perfect relationship. But she also knows something that Dipper doesn't, that Ford is willing to abandon Stan once again after the summer is over. Stan doesn't trust Ford too much, and I don't think Mabel does, either. Mabel and Ford may have more bonding moments in the future, but for now Ford's absence and influence don't facilitate this.
I don't see Mabel's development as a bad thing, considering all the things she has gone through. I just hope she's gonna be okay in the end ;_;

NWHS and TLM parallel
I“I’LL SHUT IT DOWN!”
“SHUT IT DOWN, NOW!”
The way they shout it is almost identical.
The scenes are also quite similar. Both of them feature the portal to the Nightmare Realm, and the danger it poses is the reason for their despair.
Moreover, gravity fails them both. Ford is standing on floating books, but he is actually ‘grounded’ to them - related to the way he tries to control the situation through reason. Dipper is clinging to the wall, unable to control the situation directly.

Ford is a good uncle and really loves kids 2k15
Ok ok ok so I know I’ve been irrationally pro-Ford from the jump but hear me out. Ford loves kids. Capital-L loves. I-want-8-of-my-own loves. Why am I saying this? Well, look at his fucking nerd face when he finds out Dipper and Mabel are his great niece and nephew
He was ready to murder Stan less than .2 seconds ago and now he’s smiling like a dork and getting down on his knees to shake hands. And that’s another thing - Ford gets down on his knees with the kids. He’s not asserting adult dominance by hovering over them - he’s putting himself at their level. That is a such a positive social behavior like holy shit bad guys don’t do that stuff
I don’t think there’s been a single scene yet with Ford where he doesn’t smile at the kids at some point. When he’s chasing down the cycloptopus he has this deadly serious expression on his face - that thing is dangerous and the work he’s doing in the basement is serious business. But as soon as the danger is over and the thing is KO’d, the first thing he does is grin at the kids. He’s telling them that it’s okay.
And again, after telling Dipper that he can’t go down into the basement or follow in Ford’s footsteps - “well, call me for dinner!” and another goofy smile. He lightens everything. He’s gentle with the kids, way less intense than usual. Characterization-wise, it’d be a safe argument to say that the way Ford acts around Dipper and Mabel is much more reminiscent of teenager-Ford than it is of crazy-paranoid-angry-adult-Ford.
everything’s fine
Ford is willing to drop everything to play with Dipper. He promised Stan to stay away from the kids and not put them in danger - and that’ exactly what he’d been doing. He wasn’t distancing himself from Dipper and Mabel because he wanted to, he was doing it to protect them. Then Dipper invites him to play a board game, and Ford finds his in. A safe outlet for the two of them to share their similar interests. Ford isn’t an idiot - he can see he and Dipper have a lot in common, and he wants to be close to these kids. He even kept the picture Stan had of them on his desk. Yeah, I know, Mabel’s half is covered up but that looks like it was more for symbolism in the animation than in Ford’s intent. By that I mean I don’t think he purposefully put Mabel’s half of the photo behind the TV screen thinking, ha show this little bitch I’m gonna steal her brother’s affections and leave her with nothing. It was probably displayed that way to show the distance between Dipper and Mabel - Dipper has sold himself to Ford, essentially. He and Ford have a bond now that Mabel and Ford do not (yet? hopefully).
And when Ford tells Dipper to keep the rift a secret, he’s not doing it because he wants to cause problems with Mabel - he’s doing it because he knows Dipper’s bummed out about not getting to go adventuring with the author down in the basement like he wants. It’s like when little kids get the pilot stickers on airplanes - obviously this 5 year old isn’t going to be taking the controls anytime soon, but the sticker makes them feel wanted and included. This secret is Ford’s way of telling Dipper I like spending time with you, I trust you, I want you to be a part of my life here. That’s kind of a big deal for Mr. Have-You-Come-to-Steal-My-Eyes. Ford ain’t exactly what we Americans call “trusting”. Not to mention, Ford has spent 30 years on his own, fighting and struggling to survive, with nothing but his thoughts. He’s had time to reflect on his actions and mistakes. Ford isn’t some prideful 20-something anymore - he’s an old man, who’s pride and refusal to destroy his own work for the better of humanity has gotten him trapped in the portal he created for more than half of his life. Talk about regret. Ford’s paranoia is what got him into this mess, and you’re (probably) wrong if you think he isn’t aware of that. With everything he’s seen, he’s probably realized that losing research isn’t the worst thing in the world. Maybe, maybe spending 30 years entirely alone has made him a little more willing to trust - to try and have faith in humanity. And he’s starting with a child, because kids are awesome and innocent and pure. This is called “character development”. I know, take a moment to digest.
Last but in now way least, Ford doesn’t pull Dipper into his issues with Stan. Unlike Stan, who literally hits Dipper on the head and tells him to stay away from his brother. The only thing Ford says to Dipper in relation to the fight he’s having is when he’s explaining why he dismantled the portal and he tells him, “that’s why I was mad at Stan for using it. He saved me, but, as I feared …”
He doesn’t say “Stan was an idiot for turning this thing back on - look what he did! He caused this super dangerous rift that could tear us all apart! He never thinks of the consequences of his actions, he just does what he wants and then expects a thank you!” That’s why I was mad… He saved me. Ford is explaining his own reasons for being angry without trying to convince Dipper to take his side - he even validates Stan’s actions. Ford isn’t looking to destroy Dipper’s image of his grunkle, even though the relationship between the brothers is strained at best. Ford still thinks Stan purposefully sabotaged his science project, ruined his future. The last memory Ford had of his brother for 30 years was being pushed back over the line, watching Stan watch him get sucked into the portal. But for Dipper and Mabel, Ford is willing to ignore all those bad feelings. He even invites Stan to play with them - probably in part because he can see that Dipper is desperate for Stan’s approval. Stan and Ford are ready to start fist-fighting over the living room, and when Stan starts to make fun of the game, Ford says “don’t mock our fantastical monetary system!” This is his thing with Dipper - and it’s got him projecting. BUT he recovers fast, going from 0 to 60 and inviting Stan to join them.
Ford is willing to share his bonding time with Dipper - something that can’t exactly be said for Stan at this point. By the end of the episode, even Stan has seen the error of his ways and apologizes for trying to stop Dipper and Ford from having a relationship.
So, to conclude, Stanford Pines is a huge teddy bear when it comes to children and he’s good at dealing with them. He doesn’t patronize Dipper or try to pull the “because-I-said-so” card - he levels with the kids, places himself as their equal, without giving them too much information or putting them in dangerous situations. This man is a cinnamon roll. Too precious for this multiverse.

THE “BILL IS FUTURE DIPPER” THEORY
Hey guys! So today I bring you this theory due to this tweet from Alex Hirsch himself.
WAIT WHAT? THE TRIANGLE GUY’S NAME? But we know his name is Bill whose name could it possibly-
Oh shit.
Dipper is a nickname.
Pretty interesting huh? And Note the date: November 28. This is from November 28 of 2014, right after the premiere of “Love God.” and during the Great Northwest hiatus. So, we already knew who Bill was at this point. So, why would he say this? Unless maybe Dipper
…is the past Bill?
Now, I want to note now that this theory might get a little long, so buckle up.
First lets start off with Dipper’s name. What is it exactly? Well, no one knows. But, I would like to speculate that it could be William for a few reasons. One is that someone named William could be nicknamed Bill. Another comes more from Mabel’s name. Its a bit old fashioned and has an older person feel to it. So does the name William, (also if any of your names are William I am not saying you’re old I’m just saying that it feels old on these characters.) I have a hunch that their parents might name them both something a bit older.
Next lets turn over to Bill. We don’t really know a lot about Bill other then he inhabited a body at some point and is now a dream demon making deadly deals with 12 year olds. Wait, he inhabited a body at some point? Maybe he was once human. And then went insane and corrupt due to not being able to trust anyone anymore. Sounds like someone else I know…
…oh, right. What I am getting at here is that, if Bill has mentioned inhabiting a body before, maybe he was once Dipper, living in his body until he finally became corrupt and accidentally turned himself into a demon. Where did I get that notion? Well from the fact that we have seen Dipper cast spells and use magic throughout some of the episodes, most notably, Dreamscaperers and Scary-oke. It seems pretty possible for Dipper to go insane at some point, due to his lack of trust, and end up turning himself into a demon when trying to cast a spell. I know this one sounds like a weak cause, but I am trying here.
My next piece is another shot in the dark, so just bear with me on this one. Okay, so we know that Bill is very wise in the knowledge of who Gideon was and various other events that we were shown flashing on his body. But how? Bill is a dream demon not a demon of knowledge or one that can see into the future. I propose, given that he was Dipper once, that Bill was showing Gideon his MEMORIES from when he was Dipper. Sure t sounds stupid, but how else would Bill now about that stuff?
These next pieces I will bullet point for now, I might go in depth on them later though:
Loss of hat-might represent loss of character?
Future Dipper frequently mentioned
The future Dipper Guide entries sound a little on the insane side
Ever noticed how Dipper in a suit causes bad luck?
“Who would sacrifice everything they worked for just for their dumb sibling?” They bridge with Mabel was burned last episode, think about it
Thats it for now. I will update later with more evidence if I find it!
See ya.

Bill Cipher Theory
I was just thinking... What are Bill Cipher’s actual abilities? So far, we know that he can control minds and possess people, but also that he knows/has witnessed several events from the past and/or future. So, to which extent do his powers go?
Let’s start off by saying that he is neither omniscient nor omnipotent, but he is pretty close to both of them. If he were completely omnipotent, he wouldn’t need to make deals with anyone to fulfill his plans (and could probably exist outside the Mindscape as well). If he were omniscient, he wouldn’t have needed to enter Stan’s mind in order to obtain the combination to his safe, if he really needed Gideon’s service. Let’s also assume that he has been displaying at least some of his real abilities.
Here are some of my theories about Bill:
In “Dreamscaperers”, Bill makes a deal with Gideon to enter Stan’s mind and obtain the combination to his safe, in exchange for help with “something he’s been working on”. Bill has to trick the gang into obtaining the combination, but then he loses it after Mabel shoots the memory door out of his hand, forcing Gideon to call off the deal. This can be seen as Bill being careless, but then this happens.
Bill suddenly counters all of the gang’s creations, showing that he has always been in control. He could do anything inside Stan’s mind. So why did he waste all that effort to get the combination, and how could he let himself lose it?
He wasn’t after the combination in the first place. Instead, he was after something more important: Stan’s mind.
After Bill gets the combination, we see him doing this:
He is going through Stan’s mind, opening all of Stan’s doors. He is watching all his memories, taking in everything that Stan has seen throughout his life. In fact, he only bothers to give Gideon the combination after the latter calls him.
Let’s recall that Bill accepted to help Gideon only after Gideon told him about Stan.
Gideon’s service isn’t so important to him. In fact, Bill might’ve as well known that Gideon was bound to fail even if he got the deed (and it is highly possible, but I will discuss it later). This actually happened, as Gideon got the deed by himself at the end of the episode and still went to jail in “Gideon Rises”. Basically, Bill had nothing to lose from the deal. Moreover, he got another benefit.
Throughout the episode, Bill tests the gang. He acts as an ordinary villain and pretends to follow Gideon’s plan in order to see whether the Twins + Soos can figure him out. And when they do figure the mindscape out, he is pleasantly surprised. He now knows what to expect of them.
“You’re a lot cleverer than I’ve thought. Especially the fat one”.
Okay, but Bill is a mind demon. Why would he enter Stan’s mind for his memories? Can’t he just read his mind or something, no deal involved? I think the answer is no.
We already know that Bill has some limitations. He only exists in the Mindscape, so he cannot affect the real world unless he inhabits a body. That’s why he tricks Dipper into using his body in “Sock Opera” to destroy his Journal. But he also cannot possess Dipper until he makes a deal with him. So what if his powers upon people are limited to his deals?
What if Bill needs someone to make a deal with him in order to use his powers outside the Mindscape? Something like taking a piece of someone’s soul or making a connection with the real world? Bill cannot enter a person’s mind by himself; he needs to make a deal with someone (in this case, Gideon). Bill can’t possess a body for the same reason. It’s pretty clear that Bill doesn’t know many things about people – that’s why he was ultimately defeated by Mabel in “Sock Opera” -- so there are some limits as to what he can access by himself.
Still, if Bill couldn’t read minds, how did he conjure Mabel’s dream boys and Soos’ nightmare in “Dreamscaperers”? Let’s talk about what Bill can know. It is widely accepted that Bill can observe the real world through triangle-shaped windows. Furthermore, he knows many things about the future – such as Soos’ time of death, Ford’s coming, and the apocalypse -- and there is proof of him existing in the past (in “Northwest Mansion Mystery” he appears on one of the tapestries). So he has at least witnessed events from the past, present and future, which definitely gives him a lot of knowledge about the world. He just can’t go beyond what actually happens without a deal.
That’s why Bill wasn’t very concerned with Gideon’s help. He knew that Gideon would end up in jail, so he used the deal for other means. As for Mabel and Soos, he could have observed them enough to choose something very likely for them – Mabel had suggested watching the DVD with the two boys he summoned, and Soos explicitly stated his nightmare.
However, I believe that there are some further limitations to Bill’s power. Bill is curious about the Pines gang, and occasionally impressed by their actions, so I think Bill’s powers don’t work the same way for Dipper, Mabel, Stan and the others. Maybe he cannot see their future, or the aforementioned powers only work this way with the gang. Besides, he wanted to destroy the Journal and prevent Dipper from finding out more secrets, so there is at least some sort of uncertainty regarding the twins’ actions.
We have seen that Bill is not invincible (more so if the nature of his summoning implies that he has been somehow exiled from Gravity Falls). And after “Sock Opera” I think that those who stand a chance against him are here:
The Cipher Wheel, which surely already contains some of the Main Characters.
So there you have it. Bill can make deals to tamper with the real plane, and they are the only way he can affect the Pines gang; this gives them a good chance for defeating him. Yet, he is constantly observing them and gathering information about them in very sneaky ways, which definitely makes him an unpredictable foe.
Note: I haven’t seen this theory before, I’ve just thought about it last night. If there are any similar theories, please direct me to them

I'm planning to make a full AMV with 'The Kill' by 30 Seconds to Mars about the way Ford has affected other people. This is Fiddleford's part. Fiddleford has developed both ways throughout the series. First, he was driven to insanity by working with Ford. Then, he started to regain his composure by confronting the Society of the Blind Eye. Not only he buried the part of him that worked with Stan (and got severely hurt in the process), but also the part of him that existed with no purpose and no memories. Stanley's part is next and still in the works.
