Leo Valdez could’ve solved the “they don’t even seem close” problem within the seven if his character was better used and focused on friendship instead of shitty romance.

I’ve already made plenty of posts about Piper/Jason/Leo friendship so not getting into detail but they’re perfect found family (at least in the lost hero) and learned to trust eachother even when they didn’t trust themselves

Hazel: Sammy literally told infant Leo to look out for her. The power of this set up is astronomical and there’s so much that could have been done w it besides love triangle drama. Leo is one of Hazels last connections to her old life... Hazel is one of Leo’s last connections to his mother’s family....

Frank: these two should have started out so scared of eachother. Frank bc Leo could easily kill him and Leo bc he could easily kill Frank.... but they learn to trust eachother and probably bond over loosing their amazing mothers. Them forming a comfortable friendship would help with Leo’s character arc of learning to forgive and trust himself again when it comes to his powers and Franks character arc of not living in fear of his mortality :)

Annabeth: somewhere out there is an amazing fic about these two working on the Argo plans together and the friendship they formed in the months between TLH and SoN. If anyone knows it pls send me a link. Anyway being able to bond with someone that can actually match them intellectually is probably a big deal for both of them and I wanted them to bond over it. My ideal scene with the two of them would be in MoA. They would be going back and forth making plans to fix the ship or something idk and everything they say goes straight over everyone else’s head. SoN trio are just staring at them like what??? Jason and Piper are like “you get used to it :/“

Percy: ok there’s so many similarities between these two characters and I’m really sad that Percy didn’t slowly become a big brother figure to Leo :/ both pegged as trouble makers their whole lives? Leo bounced around homes like Percy bounced around schools? Both victims of abusive households? Percy is more emotionally perceptive than ppl give him credit for and if he knew a bit about Leo’s background he would definitely be like “oh man my childhood... but without my mom.... I have to be his mom now” or something idk

It would have been so fitting for the character who felt like the biggest outsider to slowly form these deeper bonds with the other characters throughout the books.

And if all of these obvious and easy to spot connections were developed properly suddenly Leo’s sacrifice at the end is about protecting and saving his friends, the only family he’s had since his mom died. And Hazel loosing her last connection to her old life? Percy loosing someone he saw so much of himself in? It low key felt like in the end of BoO the only ppl who really lost someone was Piper and Jason, and even then,, barely? Where was the grief?

hey yall ever think about how the remainder of Leo’s living blood family disowned him and called him a “demon child” because they blamed him, a like 8 year old, for his mother’s death

and then he felt like an outsider jumping from foster home to foster home, school to school

and when he finally found a place he “belonged” with Jason, Piper, and the Seven, he was a third wheel, and then a seventh wheel, and generally kind of an outcast from that too to the point where he was literally willing to give up his life with the possibility of him not coming back because he didn’t really have anything left unless he succeeded in coming back and thus would at least have Calypso who genuinely did like him and to who he was valuable because he could get her off her island

and really the closest thing he has to a true “family” at this point is basically Hazel, because she was one of the only ones out of the 7 who actually reached out to him and got past any of his walls, and plus she was almost his great-grandma
