at a phase in my life where when i get the sense a book is trying to offer me Representation (TM) i hiss and scream and start kicking and ripping bricks out of the wall. this character's Coherent Identity And Articulation Of Their Issues had Better fit in with the rest of the worldbuilding (it won't)

Hot take: Both 20–22 episode seasons and 6–10 episode seasons have their place; the trick is knowing what types of stories are best served by each format.

Do you have any thoughts on why Alicent was written to be older than Rhaenyra in the books?
Ooo I know this one. Fire and Blood is not good. It is George RR Martin at his most misogynistic and least creative. There are only about 4 types of women in the whole thing: girl who loves sparkly dresses (vain stuck-up slut if she’s just enjoying her life, conniving bitch if she also wants power), tomboy with sword (not too butch they’ll get scared), baby-bird-virgin-victim, and bitter old hag.
Alicent is older than Rhaenyra in the books because he wanted to do evil stepmother trope (bitter old hag AND conniving bitch. Except she also got married as a teenager she can’t be too old.) That’s pretty much it to me. I think the show’s decision to make them childhood friends instead is fathoms more interesting and makes the relationship a lot more complex.

are you mad at me: deconstructive, assumes the other person’s feelings, accusatory more than inquisitive
do you want me to kill myself: broaches a problem and solution in one, prioritizes action over feelings, proactive in seeking a resolution

i find it frustrating when a character makes a decision (especially an emotional one) that makes sense for them as a person to make in a given situation, but because the decision has unforeseen ill effects of some kind, fandoms attribute this choice to the character’s stupidity. because it’s like. no!! they aren’t stupid, they are just trapped within their story and cannot see further forward in it than where and when they are!! they are not looking at this with the omniscient god’s eye view that you, the viewer who has already read this book or seen this movie, are where you know what happens after this and the consequences of every move on the narrative chess board!! they cannot make the decisions that you think you would, knowing what you know, because they don’t have all that insight!!
