no offense but there needs to be more wacky cartoons to balance out the oversaturation of serialized story-driven cartoons

post movie 2 spongebob is just as good as pre movie 1 spongebob, but in different ways
for example, post movie 2 has bob jacques as an animation director and the animation is extremely fluid and expressive and fleshes out underused characters like bubble bass, while pre movie 1 is iconic
yea there are some dud episodes but pre movie 1 episodes had dud episodes too. dont knock it till ya try it

kablam’s ACTUALLY a pretty decent show and all of the segments have charm, and henry and june are fun charming hosts as well, though some of their humor hasn’t aged super well

the more i think about it, the LESS i like mainstream animation. dont get me wrong its well made but its just so hard for me to get into. i think it more has to do with this decade being full of plot driven shows which ive never been a fan of, and big studios who are too afraid to take risks

cn put mike lu and og on their on demand section so i decided to rewatch it and...
...its boring.
i admire it a lot for being a collab between the us and russia and the bg art is really pretty (esp if you like watercolor stuff). the writing is just...very slow. i couldn’t follow the story half of the time because of its bad pacing (and this was an 11 minute story!!)
idk. maybe it was just that one, i’ll watch another one sometime soon and see if my opinion changes

look man i love “ugly” cartoons so much (cough i stan teachers pet’s art style) but summer camp island is just...unpleasant to look at in a way i can’t articulate. there’s nothing that makes it stand out (like how tp has THE most unique art style for a kids show, how k-c cartoons are intricately ugly in design) so thats probably why im not defending it

*immediately forgets i had this blog*
the jungle movie was absolutely precious, i cried at least 3 times during it
a perfect way to wrap up the series, waiting 15 years for this was worth it imo. nicks proven they can do good reboots

also: i love the HELL out of teacher’s pet, its my favorite cartoon of all time, but it has a serious problem with re-using story ideas
case in point, a lick is still a kiss and inspector leadready ii have the exact same setup. leonard gets accused of doing something to leslie that he didn’t do, strickler threatens to punish him, scott defends him and wants to clear his name, mary lou cries, ian makes ear wax jokes, leonard’s name gets cleared, the end

i keep thinking about so many plot points and interesting story ideas that were abandoned or wasted and it hurts my soul. especially the one about timmy having a feminine side and trixie having a masculine side, those could’ve brought great characterization but were forgotten after that episode

i feel like a lot of people who act like american cartoons are dumb but anime is super good (with disney/pixar as sole exceptions), or people who like american cartoons (but only the serious stuff or classic comedy/nostalgic stuff) are actually secretly fans of the stuff they’re rejecting, they just don’t want to admit it because it won’t make them look “cool”, when in fact, admitting you love silly kids cartoons will make you look cool, since you’re not following the crowd

characterization > worldbuilding
i say this because you can make a cartoon with some of the most interesting worlds, but if the characters aren’t engaging, why watch it? people like to relate with and see themselves in characters. they’re interested in the way they interact, the way they feel, the way they experience things.
if you throw well written characters into different settings, it’ll make for a fun story. compare that with flat and wooden characters in an engaging universe, which isn’t so fun to watch
