I love history specifically 15th century but i am partial to the bronze age.

my first step in the shield making process was to investigate what the boss on the shield is made of. Most do not seem to be obviously made of metal so i made a prototype shield boss made of coiled rope sewn together with heavy jute twine and soaked in glue. This is fairly resistant to strikes with various implements but i think if this construction was used it would most likely have a wickerwork frame underneath for extra strength.
after shooting it with my longbow i can confirm that it is very strong. Using a slightly different construction method it might not even be able to be pierced by arrows from a higher poundage bow.

I'm going to recreate a 15th century bossed heater shield with no starting experience. I'm sure this will not be hard at all.
