Jimmy’s words stung, and Castiel recoiled, the same helplessness washing over him that had crippled him facing Michael and Lucifer. All that he had done, all that he had sacrificed…was any of it worth it if he couldn’t protect the one family he’d sworn to? True, he’d had the entirety of Heaven at his back when he’d made that promise. He’d believed back then. All of Heaven should’ve upheld that promise, but they were betrayed. Heaven didn’t care.
His throat closed up in an all too human reaction when he felt Jimmy’s intent, his desire to be gone from him. Why wouldn’t he? Castiel had failed him. All that he had suffered, and Jimmy just…didn’t care. Castiel’s wings drooped in defeat, weary.
“I can bring your family back together, erase your memories. I will place wards on your family that will hide them from demons and angels alike…even me. It will be like nothing ever happened.” Castiel murmured quietly. “Like you never met me.”
“We still look like each other, Castiel. All they’ll need is eyes and they’ll know who I am and ..I’ll just risk their lives.” Jimmy shook his head, arms wrapped around himself. He couldn’t go back, he never would be able to. Not without risking their lives. It wasn’t worth it, nothing was worth it, not even his own happiness. ..why be free when he couldn’t be with the people he loved? He didn’t understand whomever enabled this split, whatever they thought this’d do.. it didn’t do it.
“You keep smiting and killing looking like me - it won’t work.” An idea struck, Castiel’s words registering. “You can hide them? Nobody will be able to find them if you do?” No angels, no demons. They’d be safe, right? That was all that mattered to him.

While he was with Castiel, Jimmy always only thought about one thing. His family. He never once thought about himself, about what would happen to him when Castiel fought or what’d happen to him when he was done fighting - he didn’t care about anything but Claire and Amelia. So long as they were safe, he could keep on doing this. It wasn’t as if he had much of a choice, Castiel wouldn’t let him go if he asked, not without taking Claire instead, which Jimmy couldn’t accept. He’d rather die than live knowing she suffered.
When the day came and Castiel told him he could go, Jimmy couldn’t believe it- he didn’t know why he let him free, but Castiel told him it was alright and that he found another way. Whatever that meant - probably another vessel, but .. he didn’t care. He just wanted to go home and forget about everything he’d seen. But .. when he got there, he found himself locked out of his own home. He knocked and he yelled, but nobody opened. Where was his family?
He wouldn’t leave, he couldn’t leave. Not without seeing his family, making sure they were safe and .. and happy. He sat on the porch for hours, still dressed in the trenchcoat and suit he left in, dozing just a little until a car came to a halt right in front of the house. The young girl climbing outside the car made his chest hurt and tears spring to his eyes. He stood, his hands trembling as he made his way over with a soft, sad smile on his face. ❝It’s me. I’m home, he .. he let me go.❞

Life for Claire was n e v e r the same after Castiel took her dad away. Her mom moved on, finding someone else to…“Fill the void” as she told it to Claire. Frank was a nice guy, but he wasn’t Claire’s Dad. He did what he could to make things easier for Claire. But she wasn’t about to buy into this n e w family her mom was trying to make. Her dad was coming back, and she would be there waiting.
At first she was honest with what happened to her dad. She told her friends her dad was fighting in the “Holy War”. But after enough students calling her c r a z y and her mom getting several calls from the school about her…unnacceptable behavior, Amelia finally put a stop to it. But she didn’t stop talking about it, she just saved it for when she was at home. And every night before bed she prayed that Castiel would let her dad come home.
Claire pulled into the driveway in her car, another failed attempt at Frank trying to “make things right”. Amelia wanted to sell Jimmy’s car, but Frank convinced her that saving it to give to Claire was the right thing to do. She was about to climb out of the car when she saw him. Her dad. Or was it Cas? Sitting on the porch. Amelia changed the locks the last time he came back. Her breath hitched. Finally, she slowly climbed out of the small car and stared at the figure on the porch.
❝Dad?❞

❝ I was - I was CONFUSED, Amelia. I was completely delusional. And I thought GOD was calling me to something and I thought that it was IMPORTANT … And I was wrong. I was such an IDIOT. Heaven, hell .. NONE of that matters. The only thing that’s important to me is you and CLAIRE. And I - I can’t undo what I’ve done. But I just wanna come HOME again. ❞

“Not really. I had to make sure it was really you. Sorry, standard protocol.” Claire said, wiping the silver blade off on the helm of her shirt, looking down on her father, laying where she had tackled him to the floor. “You should be glad I’m being careful at least. There are tons of monsters that can take on people’s appearances.”
Jimmy picked himself up off the floor, putting a palm over the cut on his arm to try and stop the bleeding. He frowned as he looked at her, his daughter who’d .. grown up while he wasn’t there. He’d finally found her after looking for so long. “Claire, it’s me. I’m not a demon.”

theshatteredshield:
“I just told you where they are…” Castiel frowned in confusion, but he fell silent, listening to Jimmy. The words hit him like holy fire, but they sparked an anger of their own. To think that he would willingly abandon them?
“I couldn’t come.” Castiel snapped, his wings bristling, puffing up in his anger. “I protected them from the moment that I took your body as my vessel until the moment I was dragged back to Heaven and reforged in fire and pain…”
His lip twitched ever so slightly as he remembered the pain, the cold faces above him, cutting away the parts of him that had doubts, remaking him into an obedient soldier.
“I heard your prayers as I lay bound and I could do nothing to help you.” Castiel’s voice wavered as he spoke. “I came as soon as I could. After I rebelled, I protected them even as my Grace bled from me. When I faced insurmountable forces, I protected them. I will continue to protect them as long as I am able. I have kept my promise.”
“And if you get taken again? You promised me they’d be safe so long as I gave you permission to follow your holy mission - but if you end up taken again, who will save them then? Sam and Dean who couldn’t even protect me?” His family was too important to risk anything, Castiel had to understand that. He’d trusted him once, he got shot and his daughter got possessed by an angel, his wife by a demon in just one day .. he couldn’t risk that happening ever again.
Could he just .. could he cut ties with Castiel, Heaven and Hell and be done with it? Would anybody know who he was? ..they did find him the last time. So, he was still trapped, wasn’t he? Hands trembling, he found a nearby chair and flopped down, “I can’t, Castiel - I can’t see them in pain again.” But he also couldn’t go back to being Castiel. He couldn’t, he just .. he was going to go insane like that.
“How is this possible?”

theshatteredshield:
“After her possession, Amelia felt herself unfit to continue raising Claire. She left her with Claudia, then began traveling. I warded both her and Claire for as long as I could, but during the battles against Michael and his army, my Grace became finite. Shortly before the battle between Michael and Lucifer, I was killed. I only returned a few hours ago, likely when you awoke in your own body once more. Whatever brought us back, brought us back separately.” Castiel explained as calmly as he could, worrying about Jimmy and what his state of mind might be. He didn’t know exactly how much Jimmy knew about what had been going on, if he knew about the Apocalypse at all.
“For what it’s worth,” Castiel murmured. “I’m sorry I brought you into all this. If I had known at the time what I was doing, whose path I was being led down, I would not have sought you out. I was…blinded by purpose, and…now…”
Castiel’s shoulders slumped involuntarily. He’d done so much wrong in his life, taken so many innocent lives in the name of a Father he’d never been serving in the first place. Always Michael. Only Michael. And Michael only cared about himself, and his ‘peace’ at the cost of the very creatures they’d been ordered to protect. How did he even begin to ask forgiveness?
“So.. you don’t know where they are. Or if they’re safe.” That’s what this meant, right? That’s what Castiel didn’t explicitly say. Were they okay? Did he know something he wasn’t telling him? Jimmy needed his family to be okay, he just did. They were all he had left, they were all that mattered to him. “I... didn’t know it was possible, you and me being separated.” Castiel had never mentioned it. In fact, he’d made it very clear Jimmy had to be his vessel. “Who could’ve done it?” It was a little too late now, but it was better than being stuck with an angel riding him forever.
“You would’ve ruined someone else’s life.” Jimmy was way beyond surgar-coating it around Castiel. He’d done enough damage. “You would’ve lied to someone else and blackmailed your way back into their body.” He wasn’t blind, not anymore. He saw Heaven and the whole angel lie now. “You lied to me, Castiel. You promised to protect them, but you didn’t. They almost died and for what? So you could make a great entrance? So you could get me to say yes again too ave my daughter? Why Castiel? You promised - I prayed for you.”

Castiel looked at him in confusion for a moment. He had been protecting them. He’d woven shields around both Amelia and Claire, as he had promised, until the last drop of Grace faded from him. No angel nor demon could’ve protected him with the wards he’d done, though he didn’t dare do to them what he’d done to Dean and Sam. They wouldn’t understand. He hadn’t checked on them since he’d…returned yet.
“That last time I checked on them, Claire was living with her grandmother. Amelia was in southern New York.” Castiel responded, his tone measured as if unsure of Jimmy’s reaction.
He reminded himself he’d kept Jimmy sheltered from all that was going on in order to protect him as well. He had no idea what had been going on, that Castiel had lost his Grace, and that they’d lost Sam in their efforts to end the Apocalypse. He just didn’t know.
"Why? Why isn’t Claire with her mother?” As she should be. Amelia would never leave Claire alone, she was their daughter after all. What happened to them? What did Castiel hide from him? “What happened to them? Tell me everything.” How was he supposed to get his family back if ..it wasn't there anymore? Would Claire even want him back? Would Amelia?
He couldn't be around them, could he? "I'll put them in danger, won't I? If I find them?" He didn't want to cause any more harm, they'd already seen far too much. It was all his fault, wasn't it? He'd brought danger home to them. He brought those demons there.
"How can I see you like that? How can you look like me without being me? Am I dead?"

Castiel had just left Dean behind, tracking the man mentally just long enough to know where he was going (Lisa’s, as promised) and then turning his thoughts to the future that as of now lay…unwritten. An apocalypse had been promised, and peace beyond. They had stopped that apocalypse for the sake of those it vowed to save.
He was traveling alone, flying aimlessly, when a voice he hadn’t expected to hear resounded in his Grace, bringing him to a full stop somewhere in the Andes. Jimmy.
Castiel stood in front of him in seconds, his eyes widening when the other appeared before him in physical form. He noticed they were outside Jimmy’s old home, but there was no one inside.
“…Jimmy?” Castiel started cautiously. “Is something wrong?”
Jimmy didn't have much hope, he wasn't sure Castiel would even come if he called - he didn't come the last time either, not before it was about life and death. He just wanted to find his family, he wanted to try and make up for the time he missed and the pain he caused both of them. He didn't want anything to do with angels or demons, with flying or the apocalypse. He was done.
When Castiel did show only a few mere seconds after he called for him, it was quite obvious when looking at his face that he was surprised. Very surprised indeed. He didn't know much about Castiel, but what he knew wasn't good. Not at all. He didn't know why those two hunters even put up with it.
"Where's my.." He swallowed, glancing away. It was strange looking at himself. "Where's my family, Castiel? You promised to protect them. Where are they?"

theshatteredshield:
When Castiel faced Lucifer on that field, he never expected to feel light again. Dean didn’t see what he saw: two world-shattering beings preparing to do battle…he had no hope left. No faith. He was a void, cold and lonely.
He was nothing.
Then light breathed back into him and he was renewed. How? Why? Why did this keep happening to him? Castiel healed Dean, of course, and Bobby. He couldn’t bring back Sam, not yet, but he would find away.
He was still cold, however, and it wasn’t until after he left Dean that he realized why. The warmth of Jimmy’s soul was gone, and the loneliness crept in even stronger than before. He had offered Jimmy so much, and in the end, it cost him his life. Why was he still asked to carry on? Why him?
The first thing Jimmy did was shower, he hadn’t showered in way too long (it’d been years) and then he went to find food and something to drink. James Novak had never found comfort in alcohol, the occasional Saturday afternoon beer didn’t exactly pose as a source of comfort. Men, friends, drank together - nobody knew why. It didn’t matter anyway. He needed a drink, now.
Once he was dressed, Jimmy set out - mostly to not meet the man who expected him to pay for sleeping in a bed he didn’t even knew he was going to sleep in. He didn’t know if he had money on him, but he didn’t want to risk staying too long to find out. He slipped out the door and made his way back towards the road. He found his wallet in his pocket - just the way it’d been when he got ready to leave that night he said ‘Yes’.
He got a bus ticket and drove down to Illinois, but he found his home empty, his daughter and wife gone. Where were they? He knew only one person could know. Castiel? Castiel, can you hear me?

@theshatteredshield
It’d been a wild ride for sure, half of it hadn't exactly been consensual, but Jimmy had agreed - no, he’d begged for Castiel to take him as his vessel and leave his daughter alone and so he’d been possessed by an angel for the past year or two. He didn’t know how long it’d been, he just knew he’d ruined his wife’s and daughter’s lives and he’d most likely die while being possessed.
Being possessed was a very strange feeling, sometimes he didn’t see a thing, but when he did, it was as if someone else was controlling his body (which it was) and he felt so helpless, trapped in his own body.
So when he woke up again and managed to look around the shabby motel room (how did he even get here?) and he managed to sit up, wiggle his fingers and toes - he let out a little breath of relief. How?

The fact that his SARCASM wasn’t met with contempt or IRRITATION managed to make Nick’s shoulders LOWER the faintest of fractions from their tense position. A shaky sigh threatened to breath through his CHAPPED lips { of relief, or fatigue? both? Neither? He didn’t even know it himself } but was promptly held back in order to cast yet another CAUTIOUS look { one that tiptoed the line between distrustful and full on paranoid } .
“Are you with Dean Winchester? Because I told you: I don’t know where he is.”
Question was LEFT hanging on the air before he fully realised he was asking it. This MAY not be Castiel- yet it still doesn’t MEAN his vessel can’t be working with them- well, HIM { since as far as he knew sam was being used as prom’s clothing by the morning star } .
That being said his posture had RELAXED noticeably even though he himself was to STRESSED to perceive it. Perhaps deep down he couldn’t truly BELIEVE that someone who had been USED by an angel in the manner they had would voluntarily SUBMIT to anything of the like ever again.
“It’s just me - I’m trying to find my daughter. Castiel took her, but I’m back and she should be with her father.”
Dean and Sam were hiding her, which he did appreciate - but it wasn’t necessary. He could take care of her just fine if given the chance. He’d missed her so much.
He didn’t mind the suspicion, the fear of being tricked into danger again - he understood up to a certain point. He was very careful now, too - always looking over his shoulder wherever he went, making sure he wasn’t being followed. He was worried, too. He was TERRIFIED, but being scared didn’t help and he was done sitting around and being scared. He’d learned quite a bit, he knew how to protect himself.
“Look, I know you’re scared, but I’m just like you. I want nothing to do with angels and demons - I just want to find my daughter and get as far away as possible.”
He looked at him, then, making sure their eyes met when he spoke.
“You’re welcome to join me. I can protect you.”
