the whole Kinnie Problem, when boiled down, really just sounds to me like one simple thing: "otherkin/fictionkin identities are Fake and Silly, actually, so why does it matter who uses the word lol it's all just memeing right"
it's a lack of respect, is what I'm getting. we're not worthy of having our terminology and spaces treated with respect and compassion. "it's not that deep" is just flippant shorthand for "I think y'all are insane and/or playing an elaborate game of pretend so I refuse to take you seriously". like, I would say it was classic dehumanisation and it is, even if we don't all necessarily accept "human" as an identifier. (depersonalisation? well, see, that's already a different thing. but you get my drift) (also, inb4 "well if you're not human you can't be dehumanised so I can treat you however I want hurr hurr" smh)
and I've seen "gatekeeping" being thrown around, which... how do you get that out of "here are the actual words from our community (and adjacent communities) for what you're describing ('hearted, synpath, copinglink, etc etc), please use those instead" unless you are intent upon reading in bad faith? sure, those aren't meme-able and cute and trendy. that's part of the point.
it's just irritating. it's literally fine to be a roleplayer, a copinglinker, otherhearted, a person with a special interest in that dude from Danganronpa, whatever. maybe Mewtwo is your Persona.* fuck it. there's all kinds of ways to be connected to or identify with something. I used to c'link like three Hetalia characters back in the day. I identify with Ardyn Izunia. those are separate from my actual 'kin (as in: I AM this character) identity. you can do one! you can do both! you can do neither, and actually do something else entirely! because the variations of [non]human experience are myriad! but when we invent words for these experiences, so we can connect with other people who have similar ones, it'd be real nice if people would make an effort to use them in the ways they were intended to be used. when language shifts, it should be out of necessity, not out of thinly veiled mockery.
if I say to you "please don't use 'kinnie', but here are some other great words/concepts for what you're describing", I'm saying "please have some respect for me and don't use a word that is inextricably connected with mockery of my identity", and if you take it as gatekeeping and decide I need to get over myself, then you can hit the fuckin road
*actually that's fuckin sick please tell me someone's got Mewtwo as a Persona

kind of a vent? i'm leftykin (an animatronic from fnaf) and its weird to be a character that people in the community view as a completely separate character but essentially in a costume. i am not the puppet nor am i charlie. i once was inhabited by the puppet, but that does not mean that i am possessed by her. i am just an animatronic bear named lefty. even the voice actors for the two characters are different in the games! i rly wish more people would understand that i am my own being... -lefty
