Stormblood is probably my favorite expansion in FFXIV, but god, I HATE how the writers treated Yotsuyu in the second half, and I hate your character's passivity and incompetence in all her predicament. I hate how we're supposed to demonize someone who doesn't even remember what she did wrong and forgive the men who turned her into a monster in the first place (the pleasure house guy is readily forgiven by Hien despite knowing full well what he's done, but Yotsuyu, who doesn't even remember her own name, deserves to die for her crimes? The pimp is "honorable", but his traumatized, amnesiac victim is unforgivable? Even though he knows FULL well how fucked-up his treatment of her was, to the point he runs away at the mere sight of her, not out of regret or guilt, but out of fear of retaliation, because HE KNEW her hatred of him was fully justified? If I had my way, my character would have clocked that fucker's face so hard they would have broken his goddamn jaw right then and there, Hien be fucked.

I hate how your character stands there watching her be (literally) kicked and threatened when they've been nothing but kind to people so far, I hate how few dialogue options we're given during this whole arc, how we're not even given the CHANCE to come to her defense ONCE in any cutscene. I hate how everyone but Gosetsu treats Yotsuyu like some irredeemable demon when we're supposed to treat the Confederacy, pirates who bully, extort and abuse common folk (you literally come across one proudly and gleefully laughing as he takes EVERYTHING from sailors who didn't pay the Confederacy's extortion fee, even their CLOTHES, and boasts about it), as roguish, lovable heroes when Limsa Lominsa has no tolerance for people like them, and over there they're treated like the criminals they are (but I guess THEIR sad backstories excuses their actions, and THEY'RE above consequences. Go figure.) I hate how the abuse you've literally SEEN her go through in her childhood memories doesn't even come up ONCE. And we're supposed to believe our character wouldn't stand up for Tsuyu? That ALISAIE, probably the character who's the most vocal and resolute in the whole game about standing up for what's fair and just, would just watch this shit without saying anything?? That our character would let Asahi anywhere NEAR Tsuyu on his own even if you express disbelief and distrust for his good intentions, when the prisoner exchange deal hinges on her not recovering her memories by the time Asahi leaves? Who the fuck wrote this?

I absolutely HATE how Yotsuyu's only ever referred to as a monster in Endwalker, how Gosetsu doesn't even MENTION her, all but his surrogate daughter, the person whose body he SOBBED OVER, in the role quests, when it would have been perfect for him to leave her hat or a dango or just SOMETHING at the Doman memorial that was supposed to honor ALLIES AND ENEMIES ALIKE. He didn't have to say who the item belonged to, it would have been something that was theirs, Gosetsu and Yotsuyu's, alone, and I was ACTIVELY EXPECTING SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN AND IT NEVER FUCKING DID. IT'S LIKE GOSETSU JUST FUCKING FORGOT HER ENTIRELY. WHEN HE WAS THE ONLY ONE TO STAND UP FOR HER AND SHOW HER KINDNESS. I hate how she's treated like she never had any sort of redemption and died a monster when she was about to TAKE HER OWN LIFE OUT OF GUILT OVER WHAT SHE'S DONE TO GOSETSU AND HIS FRIENDS BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T THINK SHE DESERVED THEIR KINDNESS, AND DIDN'T THINK SHE DESERVED TO LIVE. When it's heavily implied that the only reason she even went through the Tsukuyomi summoning at all was because SHE THOUGHT SHE SHOULD DIE A MONSTER AND SPARE EVERYONE THE AMBIGUITY. BECAUSE IT WAS EASIER TO JUST LET PEOPLE HATE HER FOR BEING A DEMON THAN HAVE GOSETSU DEAL WITH THEIR REACTIONS TO HER. WHEN SHE DOESN'T EVEN UNDERSTAND WHY YOUR CHARACTER SEEMS SAD OVER HER DEATH, BECAUSE SHE THINKS SHE DESERVES TO BE HATED BY EVERYONE AND A MONSTER IS ALL SHE COULD POSSIBLY BE. And, again, you have no dialogue option to reflect how Doma was primarily to blame for what Yotsuyu had become. AND THEN THEY HAVE THE FUCKING NERVE TO GO ALL "oh boo hoo poor Hien he's suffering so much for letting her live, look at how conflicted he is over his awful mistake of showing mercy on someone who objectively deserved it since she didn't remember what she did wrong and was willing to die once she recalled all of it" ON MY ASS. NO. GET. THE FUCK. OUT OF HERE. WITH THAT BULLSHIT.

And what makes this all even worse? Fordola's got basically the SAME character hook and plot, and she's handled perfectly. The writers COULD have had Yotsuyu die in the end to contrast Fordola, still, and to have Fordola be what Yotsuyu could have been had Ass-sahi not shown up and fucked with everything, while still giving you, the player, the option to treat her with a fucking MODICUM of basic sympathy other than "Tsuyu deserved a kinder fate" by the point she's bleeding out on the floor, thanks in no small part to YOUR inaction and YOUR incompetence. Hell, Emet-Selch did equally awful shit, not least of all CREATING THE GARLEAN EMPIRE AND ATTEMPTING TO END THE WORLD MULTIPLE TIMES and he's still rightly regarded as a victim of circumstance, and someone your character wishes they could have saved. Someone they regarded as a friend, or, at least, not an enemy. Why is Yotsuyu so fucking vilified by the writers in comparison to him, to Elidibus, to Fordola, to Nero, to Gaius? Why is the player NEVER given the chance to express an ounce of empathy for her other than ONE dialogue option that completely excludes Yotsuyu as a whole and instead implies your character only feels bad for her Tsuyu persona? Fuck that, YOTSUYU deserved a kinder fate, not just Tsuyu. Fucking GRYNEWAHT was kinder to her than the Warrior of Light ever was. This whole arc (and by extension, the ranged DPS questline in Endwalker) is the only time in the entire game I not only don't like my character, but actively DISLIKE them. This is the only time in the entire game I actively view them as a passive jerk and an incompetent idiot, not as the hero. I genuinely LOVE my character in the whole game, except for this one goddamn arc.

By all accounts, I should not be this incensed over a fictional villain, but by god, the way Yotsuyu was handled post-Stormblood's MSQ just fucking enrages me to no end, especially considering the Doma arc in the main part of Stormblood actually handled her WELL. If THIS was what they were gonna do with her character, she might as well have fucking died in Doma Castle. She deserved better. I will NEVER be over how fucking dirty they did this character.

(And just to clarify, in no way does Yotsuyu's backstory actively justify or excuse her cruelty to innocent people. But I expected the consequences to come for everyone who did shitty things. Instead, it seems every bad person in Doma's forgiven and exalted except for her, despite the fact that, unlike them, SHE doesn't remember what she did that was so awful, and, unlike them, SHE was willing to die to make up for it. Hell, the Confederacy KEEPS ON DOING AWFUL SHIT AFTER STORMBLOOD AND NOBODY SAYS JACKSHIT ABOUT IT. THEY'RE STILL GIVEN FREE REIGN TO EXTORT CITIZENS AND ABSOLUTELY NO ONE CARES. THE FUCKING HEAVENSWARD ZEALOTS AND ZORAAL JA WERE SHOWN MORE SYMPATHY BY THE WRITERS THAN YOTSUYU WAS.)
