Lee Fuchs IDA Final
Tumblr media
My poster about health care focuses on how mental health needs to be more ingrained into the normal care given by our practitioners. I think over all my graphic did advocate for more integration and more education. I believe that it advocates by showing the statistics for the people who don’t get care and showing the audience that these statistics are very important and extreme. I believe that overall the type and the graphics in relation to each other create a good sense of unity and organization. I split up the larger text and the small paragraphs into the larger areas to use the space provided well as well as using the pentagon type figures to split up the page. I also integrated a graph to show the impact of the statistic and that helps to bring everything together. I think that if people were walking by my poster in a normal area they might not come closer to view it but in areas such as schools or medical offices or waiting areas they would be more inclined to look at the poster. I believe they would be able to understand the information quickly. The main points are bigger and stand out much more. I feel like the process of making this was in some ways easy and in other ways very stress inducing. Things such as learning where and how to frame the text and graphics were hard for me while finding the information was pretty easy to find. I do think going through the process critiques did help immensely in my process of organization in my poster. I needed the feedback to understand what was good and what could be fixed and organized better. I was helped in critique by having others explain the little things that needed to change such as my hyphenation and punctuation. Other things such as placement I also got a lot of help with.

My Design Rational
My advocacy campaign was to further awareness about the mass deaths of bees and their colonies, as well as to bring a better understanding to the general population as to what they can do to help save the remaining bees. I set out to do this by creating logos and materials reflecting what a bee is all about such as honey, flowers, flying, and much more. I decided to implement these to impact the reader hopefully to a heartfelt realization that the bees do a lot more than they think. I think using my brochure as an invitation to a “convention” got the point across that there is a need for some type of intervention in the community to save the bees. I used pretty flowy fonts to tie in with my drawings and theme so that it would look cohesive and well thought out to the reader or audience. Most of the materials have one bee with flowers inside it on them and throughout my process I implemented that to show how bees do in fact somehow relate to flowers and growing. I also used this on the bag and shirt and mug which were in my opinion my most impressive points in the campaign. Most importantly I think while going over my materials I realized that just using facts and statistics would be very boring to me so I switched to a more subtle hint at the topic by using the graphics I said above such as the large bee with flowers inside.

Process for Mental health IDA assignment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for my mental health IDA poster and information I am using medical like type and imagery to create a rigid and important looking info graph.
My mental health design brief:
Mental health is an overwhelming topic to talk about but the main issue that arises in this topic is that there is not enough or fully informative presented information in our country. This is a problem because most people are uneducated or too worried to take action and not informed enough to even understand how to start.
My target audience is teens to seniors (14-65 year olds) who suffer with mental illness or health struggles in general. These are the people that are most affected by the lack of mental health resources so these are the ages that should be most important to advocate for.
This topic is an important issue because over the years suicide and suicidal ideation has become overwhelminng in most communities. The rates of young adult suicide have risen and mostly not gone down to the “normal level”. The amount of kids to adults I have heard or seen struggle with mental illness has been astounding and that is just in my small surroundings in Rochester New York. Most of these issues are not taken care of due to the absurd prices in our health care and the lack of providers in most areas in the United States. Other issues causing this is lack of education on correct services or the online services new and upcoming. Without proper education and good cost there will be more mental health crises in our states and no possible way to fix it.
My design plan is to create the poster in a way to show “medical” imagery such as charts and medications to show that these are included in mental resources. I am using mostly blue and some orange to correlate with medical type coloring as well as a typeface that is somewhat harsh and straight like medical type. My whole idea is to try and make the paper look like a medical infographic you would see for chronic illness so it can tie in with the importance of mental health being included.

Human rights poster
Tumblr media
My human rights poster is addressing the article 25 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This article is information about the rights to a certain standard of basic medical intervention and health care. I used my knowledge of this to apply this to woman's rights, especially to the usage of preventative medicines as well as abortion services. I used the eye illustration to sort of show how over time. woman's rights have progressed a small amount, and the background to show how there still needs to be some changes in the healthcare for women. The quote at the top by Elizabeth Blackwell also shows the need for further change to the care for women's health in America. I think my poster does show my topic well as the color change shows anyone that there is more diversity and that side is the side with more rights written behind it. I also think my usage of the actual article tied into the quote at the top to show the real reason behind the poster. As for hierarchy I think I did a moderate job at showing the difference in importance. This is shown by the color in the quote and the size of it as well. Critique helped me a lot because at the beginning of the project I didn't really have a vision so going through the project getting feedback helped a lot to visualize what I should add or take out.

Jonathan Hoefler Postcard
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Write a brief reflection of how you feel about your design, and hierarchy.
I think over all after doing my design it works well with all the attributes I used and meshes well with who Jonathan Hoefler is.
What are you really proud of?
I'm really proud of the glasses and how I put some of the fonts inside as I thought that was super cool.
What worked well to create your designs organization and hierarchy?
I think the text being smaller than his name and the stamp being a large letter worked to my advantage so it sort of drew my eyes in from the large to the small. I also like how I boxed the smaller text.
What aspect of the program helped you execute your ideas?
I used a lot of layering and editing so one of the biggest helps in the process was the lasso tool and the marquee tools.
Do you feel like you grew as a designer during this process?
yes. I feel like I grew in my talents because most of the items I used and the processes I went through were new and pretty hardcore me together a hang of until I did it over and over. Name something you learned both technically and conceptually from your project?
I learned how to create different shapes to outline objects instead of a border or bevel tool. I also learned that sometimes making things overly large will make your piece look off and not as pleasing.

Found Objects
Tumblr media
For my final on the found objects assignment I decided to not go with the drawings I had already done. This was because I did not think they were original. Looking back now I should have gone with what I was able to do instead of trying to stretch my creativity. This spells out sweet in honey and oats and salty in sauce and pasta and spices. The contrast is the thing I showed best as the sweet side was more gentle and the salty side was more bold. I also tried to use a more open font for sweet and a block type font for salty. I wanted there to be a clear divide between them. I tried to create atmosphere behind by scattering the objects I used around but I ended up not liking the results on any of the options I tried. Sadly this isn't my best but I still liked the experience and I now know what to do better.

Final Reproduction
Tumblr media
This is my final product for a reproduction project I have been doing. This a reproduction of Bradbury Thompson's Victory Magazine Spread.
I did find this a bit challenging for my skill set while creating this piece. Drawing the colored half circles was hard as I needed a specific opacity and type of grain to it. The darker half circles were much harder as they had a much more apparent texture to them. Over all drawing most of the aspects in this was one of the hardest parts for me.
My technique was for sure a lot different from Bradbury's original work. I mostly used procreate to design and draw the arrows and circles as well as photoshop to put together the parts I drew. I used solely digital medias and no paper or any other mediums. I did use textured brushes in procreate such as the water paint stroke and the technical pencil. I think working this way did change the way people will see the poster as it doesn't look as authentic as the original. I has the look of being created digitally and not physically which I would have liked to change more if possible.
I really liked Bradbury's use of the colors overlapping and the depth between them and the arrows. This is for sure something I focused on trying to replicate the most as this was the unifying piece in the poster.
If I could've done anything differently I would probably have tried to hand draw the horse and the arrows to see if that would have created a better depth to them and better shadowing.

Bradbury Thompson Research
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bradbury Thompson is a prominent magazine designer / creator from the 1900’s. He was born in 1911 in Kansas and passed in 1995 in Connecticut. He graduated from a college called Washburn with his degree in Economics and immediately after in 1934 started his design career. He started working for Capper Publications, helping to design covers for magazines and books, and stayed there for four years. He got the opportunity to become an art director for Rogers- Kellogg-Stillson in 1938. When working here he was introduced to the Westvaco's graphics publications. He became interested in the type of work Westvaco was producing and he began to create his own works inspired by their publication. He then designed art for the Inspiration series, and it was very highly acclaimed. Thompson then went on to create 61 issues for them from the years 1939-1962.
Needless to say, the start to Bradbury’s life was spectacular and fast moving. He had said his degree in economics proved useful to connect the world he lived into the art he could and would produce. He went on after working with Capper and Westvaco to become the director of art in multiple other businesses and national capacities as well as designing many of the stamps used in the mail. Thompson authored a book called “The Washburn Bible” as well as another called “The Art of Graphic Design” later in life.
Thompsons use of typography was indeed a very big part of graphic design history. He is known for his use of typography in a way that created not just lettering but shapes and beautiful designs on a page. His use of integrating regular type with type-design was and is one of the reasons he is remembered for his achievements. Throughout Bradbury Thompsons life he used his surroundings and his beliefs about our world and culture to influence how he created his graphic elements, and this is what he is most recognized for. At the end of the day Thompson was and is one of the most important influencers of graphic design from the 19th century.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two pictures are my favorite two from the few I did ( I accidentally deleted two of my first drafts) I was interested in the use of medication and health supplies to make the words anxiety. Through this process I realized that certain words and items don't go together so the colored picture is my final draft I have made. the third picture is the mock up I did to help me visualize it more in depth.

Lee's type exercise ART 235
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Throughout this project I got used to seeing depth and shapes within letters and words. In the first part using one letter I used the letter W. This is symmetrical and created a very nice graphic showing depth and also even shapes.
The second part I used the letters q and k. These were not any special meaning to me I just thought they would look interesting when contrasted against each other. At first I wasn't sure how to make shapes or depth with white and black lettering but when I accidentally put the k over the q It made a cool pattern that showed me how the contrast could work for the benefit.
The third part was the expressionism lettering. I showed two of these above as this was a very fun part of the project. I used coloring and spacing as well as spacing to show the relation between the letters. for instance in the circular one I used colors and size to show which way the letters went as well as insinuating a ticking clock.
For the last part, hierarchy, I used my knowledge of type to create a type of symmetrical business card. I used size to show the things I wanted to be seen more. Lee Designs is the biggest and boldest because that is my "company" name. The graphic designer because that is my title and then the rest of the info put into small font as that is supplemental to the card. The phone number is bold as that is the contact info I would like the people I give this to to see and use.

Photoshop exercise one (ART 225)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two photos are the final product from my first photoshop exercise in ART 225. For the flower picture I learned how to manipulate a picture and text to create a clipping mask. This wasn't new to me as I have done this in procreate before but it helped understand the controls of photoshop more and how the mechanics work. The collage was a bit more difficult for me to finish. I had a list of information and yet it took me awhile to understand what tools to use when. One of the hardest parts of the collage was the uncertainty if I was using the tools correctly. There are many ways to use each photoshop tool that at times it is stressful. In the end I realized that even if it doesn't look perfect it is a work in progress as we are learning this new technology.
