On Sunday I took a walk around my neighborhood and found a bunch of maps for sale! I bought some of the places I lived in France before moving to Paris. I hope that I won’t be moving again anytime soon :-)

The real question : do you use a blue or black pen? My blue pen ran out during the lecture and I'm kind of liking the black ink 🖋️

uni update : I wasn't expecting my course to be this difficult !!! :O Computer science really does break me... until I get my program running perfectly, which then I'm the happiest little data scientist!! ❤️

Irish, Polish and cars all being mentioned in the same post reminded me of a ridiculous piece of Irish history:

There was a Polish national that was causing significant trouble on Irish roads. Mr. Prawo Jazdy was getting many speeding fines in multiple cars and everywhere around the country. Irish Gardaí (the police) couldn’t figure out how he hasn’t been arrested yet. So many driving offences across two decades, all by the same Mr. Prawo Jazdy! They were really scratching their heads about this Polish fantom speeding away on Irish roads.

Turns out that Prawo Jazdy actually translates to ‘drivers licence’ in Polish.

Speeders were using their Polish drivers licences to get away with it, saying their names are Prawo Jazdy. “Look! That’s my name on my licence!”

This doesn’t happen anymore due to the standardisation of drivers licences in the EU, but Irish officers now know at least two words of Polish lol

"Irish doesn't have a word for please, you have to say if it be your will" buddy do I have news for you about "please"

"Irish doesn't have a word for hello you have to use a shorthand religious blessing" buddy do I have news for you about "goodbye"!

"In Polish the word for car is that which walks by itself" BUDDY what do you think an AUTOMOBILE is?

you have got to understand that your mother tongue is not the model of language. all your words have secret histories and layers of meaning just the same as other people's words. the word you think of as just a word has etymology, it wasn't handed down from God as a finished word. English doesn't have a word for movie you have to either refer to the recording medium or use a short version of "moving picture", isn't that cute?
