Photographed by Kevin Cummins, 1994
Note: This is a translation, not direct quotes. This is not the full interview. You can find the complete french interview by clicking the link below.
What did you think of them during that first encounter?
Kevin Cummins: They were pretty normal lads, to be honest, excited about going on tour. Not cocky or arrogant. The music press likes to have a stock of images to use later, after an album release for example. Since Oasis was heading off on a U.S. tour, we wouldn’t be seeing them again for several months.
When I did a shoot with them in late July 1994, I had this idea of longevity in mind. Liam was wearing a brown top, but I thought it would look better if the two brothers were in similar colors, so I lent him a denim Armani shirt I had just bought. His reaction: “This is amazing, I’ve never had an Armani shirt before.” I replied, “You still don’t, since you’ll have to give it back after this shoot!” Musicians always assume they can keep the clothes we dress them in.
The Gallagher brothers aren’t known for being easygoing. Were you able to direct them easily?
Kevin Cummins: Yes. I still photograph Liam and Noel for their respective solo careers. I tell them exactly what I want them to do, and I find them very patient. Back then, when we didn't take photos of ourselves all day long with our phones, they weren’t really used to being photographed. I imagine they practiced in front of a mirror at home, like all bands do.
Musicians tend to listen to photographers’ advice. They know I’m there to make them look good. Liam is very funny, but he can also be very exhausting. He’s a loose cannon. Last time, he knew I had just done the cover for Noel’s new album, and he said: “I bet you’re buzzing to shoot with me instead of our kid.” As if I was thrilled to be with him… Noel is calmer and thoughtful, he sees his music as a whole, including the visual aspect.

#that's hard because the drama on my dad's side is just that we don't talk to him#but my mom and her siblings are soooooooo bad at communicating#which frequently causes some friction#also my uncle hasn't worked a day in his life but still expects everyone to listen to him because he's The Man#useless blob

Liam said his dream in Oasis was to write with Noel and have writing credits that said “Gallagher-Gallagher”

His dream, he says, was for a partnership like Lennon and McCartney.
“I guess maybe that’s the real thing,” he adds, slipping into an unusually reflective mood. “I wanted Gallagher-Gallagher writing music. Obviously he’s on another level. But I guess that’s what I really wanted from that band. Gallagher-Gallagher – I think we could have been…” He tails off forlornly.
— Liam 14/09/2019 The Telegraph

Well, there could have been “Gallagher-Gallagher”, but he wasn’t into it.
— Noel 30/09/2019 The FACE

It would be great to have a Gallagher/Gallagher composition at Number 1, it would be fuckin' great, it would be great for music. It would be... the natural thing.
— Noel July 2002 Q Special Edition
Please please please make his dream come true🙏🏻
#and if i kms?#all he's ever wanted is noel's respect........#he just wanted to sit with noel and write a lil song together#meanwhile noel's like ??? here are 25 songs i wrote them by myself bc i don't have the patience to explain my process to my little brother#oasis
