"i understand not having a choice in the way a life should go." he knows this all too well himself since he never wanted to be turned into a vampire or a monster that he occasionally is subjected to becoming, but he didn't want to get into his tragic past despite theo starting to open up more about herself. it was just easier to let her talk and to listen to whatever it was she wanted him to know about her.
