There's a sizable Muslim population in Danforth, or rather this county at large. Notable Arab and South Asian populations, spread all over this Northern border of the state and NYC in particular. For Lily, this must have added to the security and appeal of Danforth, with pre-established Muslim communities so she wouldn't have to be so wary in that regard.
For Dick, it meant he hadn't the slightest clue which of the many veiled women walking by were his sister.
He hasn't seen her face at all since they reunited. He's not sure if he ever will, but he's not going to push for that of all things, no matter his curiosity. It does make it harder to single her out though, since it would seem that just about every niqabi in their 20s to 30s shopped in the same places and favored the same trends.
(He's counted at least seven that had the exact same outfit, embroidery and all, albeit in different colors.)
Dick sighs and rolls his shoulders, as the nth woman who was not Lily walks into a store, eyeing him warily. He's aware of what he must look like, squinting at every young niqabi that he catches sight of. It isn't helping any or getting Lily here any faster, and from the way the baker across the street is glaring at him, he's only risking getting himself chased off.
So Dick closes his eyes and tilts his head back. Lily will get here when she gets here, and looking too hard isn't going to help him any. Watched pots and whatnot.
Initially, Dick had thought that Danforth was a ridiculous place for anyone, let alone Lily, to try and lay low or avoid the bats. He realizes now that he might've been hasty in his judgement.
In reality, Danforth was both too close and too far from Gotham. Still within the bounds of Jersey, but on the opposite side of the state. Theoretically easily reachable, especially for the likes of the bats, but realistically-
Well. What the fuck would any of them be doing in Danforth?
Why would anyone be in Danforth, unless they lived in or around, or were visiting for a particular reason?
In truth, though the Bats traveled a lot, very often and very far, the kind of traveling they did was limited to certain areas, and more often than not for Bat reasons rather than personal to boot. From other capes' cities, to missions and sometimes fancy vacations in foreign countries, to lesser known or even secret territories, to even space - all of that was fair game. Random residential areas in America, or even around the state, with no unusual criminal activity and where the most interesting thing was the greenery? Not so much.
For all the time that's passed and all the distance - literal and figurative, physical and spiritual - that extends between them, Lily still knows Bruce and Dick in particular ways that few else do. They've all changed significantly and dramatically over the past several years (fuck, it's been almost two decades) but some things remain the same, if only by habit.
Ultimately, some slowly bustling little city (large town?) in North Jersey - about 40 minutes from NYC with no hero scene nor any Wayne-related interests - was never going to be noticed as it was. However random it may seem, Lily had done well in choosing a safe, convenient, and hidden place to make her home.
Hell, the only reason Dick was here now - or even knew she was alive and around at all - was due to a mission in Granada four years ago, pure fucking chance, and Tim Hunter.

@star-archivist In response to your comment, since mine was getting long lol
Firstly, I'm really glad you like it! I knew while working on it that a lot of people would not care or would even dislike this AU because it's so different from what the desired idea of Jason or what they want from him. It was always going to be pretty specifically for me only, but I'm glad someone else is enjoying it.
Also yea definitely there will be internal conflicts resulting from the Bruce-Lily off, especially with certain bats over others. They range from similar reactions to other capes of "why are you upset your dead kid is alive/why are you upset a teen assassin reformed and settled down well as an adult" to kind of like uncomfortable with Lily's Everything TM and thus not caring to involve themselves or think too hard about Bruce's weird emotional thing, to just like "literally who cares this is just some lady".
Some of them would be awkward or uncomfortable with Lily definitely (see: Tim), but it will be for Very different and more boring generic reasons than Bruce's thing. Actually have a post about that in the tag that elaborates on the more personal/social aspect.
Others will probably get a bit agitated about the push and pull, like Stephanie. She's removed from the situation personally so she has more of an outsider's view, but to her it really seems like another "nothing ever satisfies Batman" thing but in some ways worse, which tbh she's not wrong for that. I will say at least for her, especially considering her limited information or involvement, there's probably at least some projection affecting her feelings on the matter, but that projection probably isn't wrong either.
Cass I think would be most normal about Lily besides Duke. For Cass, Lily is a random woman she has no history with, who obviously has no killing intent or criminal plans, is literally just some mom who doesn't like them being around or capes butting into her business. Like sure Lily used to be an assassin but she doesn't want to be a killer anymore and hasn't for years, she's happy to live a normal and fulfilling mostly civilian life with her daughter, that's great, Cass loves to see more people genuinely living better lives.
Cass doesn't have any of Bruce's baggage or weirdness attached to Lily at all, she doesn't care to pick apart Lily's very specific reasons for not killing because she doesn't care and like obviously it's working out perfectly fine, so Lily is just a reformed civilian woman with some vague past ties to Bruce and Dick that has nothing to do with her. She also definitely won't have Tim's hangups or discomforts because she doesn't care about those things. If anything she sees the genuine joy and contentment within Lily about how she looks and lives as something reassuring.
(Sidenote: I use "reformation" a lot when talking about Lily's history from the perspective of the bats/capes, but I would add that it has nothing to do with my personal view or how Lily perceives herself and her experiences. It's just a term/view that certain bats and other capes would think was appropriate.)
Duke is aware that a thing is happening, but ultimately much like Cass, does not care about the civilian woman he's never met before and has no connection too. He's watching this all go down and doesn't know why anything has to go down at all. Honestly besides affecting the moods and interactions between bats it really has no bearing on him.
Damian is interesting to think about because he straight up knows Lily, on a personal level. They're more acquaintance-y by the time any of this would theoretically happen, and Damian would have grown quite a bit, and they'd be polite enough but distant. But even without the shared connection to Bruce, Lily would basically be his cousin given her relation to Nyssa. (Backstory I never talked about? More likely thank you think!)
Damian wouldn't necessarily be Close to Lily, especially given how much time would have passed by the time of this series of events, but Lily was pretty decent to him as a kid, which he appreciates even if at least some of it was an obligation. He has this like, vague limited sense of respect or filial piety by virtue of her being an older sort of cousin who babysat him often enough. He would get occasional correspondence from her so he was never totally out of the loop about what she was up to, but it was more a distant awareness of yea I have this one kind of relative around somewhere.
Damian would be confused and even agitated about the Bruce-Lily conflict because he wouldn't understand why Bruce was upset with Lily for her past or her beliefs (why is Lily specifically a problem?), but also no one will really explain anything to him or want him in the loop. It gets a little more personal with him since again it's technically family and there's also some like cultural sensitivities being touched on. If left to his own devices Damian probably would shoot Talia a call or something at some point for consultation if anything but Lily would ask him to stay out of the situation.
On that note I imagine Damian and Lily would kind of reunite which wouldn't help Damian's inability to feel too close to the matter. I don't think they'd be buddy buddy best friends or anything, but an accessible and reliable older cousin who'll probably help you if you asked is so valuable to have in your life.
And as for Dick, well. What a mess is all I can say lol. He's kind of at the center of everything and the one always conflicting with Bruce over the matter. There's so much I can say about his role but that's what my attempt at a fic is for. He's like the most important and involved with Lily, literally knew about her long before everyone else and kept her secret upon request, wants so bad to be able to maintain this tentative connection to his sister, and then everything goes to shit because his family was getting nosy and decided crossing boundaries was the way to go and now he's practically back to square one with Lily and deeply angry with the situation and the bats and especially Bruce for not only ruining this for him but also being a bitch to him and Lily about it. It's so bad. Pray for Dick's sanity and well-being, genuinely, he's having such a bad time and trying so hard to regain some control and he's scared Lily will give up and leave and then he will never see his sister or niece again.
All this being said, I will confess that quite frankly I don't want the bats to find out Lily exists. I think everyone would be much happier that way, and it's also literally what Lily wants. Contemplating the possibilities is interesting but for the main au I genuinely would prefer that it's just Dick (and you know, Damian, though that's only revealed later) knowing about Lily, about Dick being able to cultivate a closer relationship than he was able to originally without the threat of bat interference. So this entire post is more of a hypothetical thing I'm toying with, au of an au if you will, but I would prefer that The Lily Pot au stay centered around Dick and Lily so batdrama probably won't be given as much thought or written out for a long while if ever.
Thinking about that take that's basically "if Jason gives up on killing it should have nothing to do with batman and co, and do little to improve their relationship because Bruce doesn't understand that other reason why Jason stopped"
(Fully agree with and love this for the record)
I always figured that if I ever decide to have Lily and Bruce meet in The Lily Pot au, it will not go well and absolutely not end in reconciliation
But I realized furthermore that Lily would definitely have killed many people some time during their post resurrection youth, and then decided to stop (excluding certain extreme cases that mostly don't involve humans anyway) and been satisfied not killing for several years before the theoretical reunion with Bruce even happens
But she also wouldn't regret what she had done, not in a way Bruce could accept, because ultimately her reasons for killing and for not killing have nothing to do with Bruce or his code and is entirely about herself and her beliefs and her growth, and Bruce in turn isn't able to really understand where she's coming from
It would be a source of strife between them (presuming Lily didn't pack her bags and go off the grid the second the bats got distracted)
Bruce wouldn't be able to understand or accept Lily or her thinking and beliefs,
and Lily would not in the slightest care about compromise or sympathy or reconciliation or being in his good graces (in fact her entire aim was to live long and well without ever having anything to do with bat and co or having them know she existed)
So she's antagonistic and angry and high-key a megabitch but in like very normal humany ways that don't entail any killing or criminal activity
Like oh this lady doesn't get along with her estranged father and says really mean things to him. Genuinely no one around (as in civilian neighbors etc) cares about it, to them it's another bitter parent-child relationship and thus unremarkable
Whenever Bruce gets all bat broody about Lily, others get confused because "you're mad that she's... Not killing anymore??"
So to outsiders this situation and the animosity just doesn't make sense because it's Batman having personal familial beef with a random lady who is as good as a civilian to them
And to Bruce it's like "you wouldn't get it it's more complicated than that it's personal with lots of layers and nuance stay out of it" but to everyone else they're just confused why it's a bad thing a teenage assassin reformed and settled down peacefully and hasn't killed in years. Like who cares the specific how's and why's so long as nothing insidious is going on
Lily quite frankly is mostly deeply normal compared to the bats or other capes, it's like she's just a mom in a small city who very very occasionally will help with certain missions if absolutely necessary and more often than not it's only of the intel kind

Dick rubs the back of his neck. It's a warm, sunny day and he's loitering outside some tea shop. The humidity's starting to be a nuisance.
A mom strolls by with her babbling toddler. The kid notices him and waves their toy, so Dick smiles and waggles his fingers in greeting. The kid finds this so delightful they're still giggling as they disappear around a corner.
He tries not to think about a certain niece little girl. That he may or may not be able to meet today.
Lily should be arriving soon, or so was her plan. Dick might be the one always reaching out or checking in, but it's Lily who decides the if, when, where of their very occasional meetings.
He doesn't mind it, really, even if he would like to see her more often. He's glad Lily's trying to maintain some form of distance from the caped world, even if it includes him. Her safety and stability takes priority, and he won't fault her for the distance if that's what it takes.
He's glad she's got this chance, to make these choices. That she's found herself a place in the world, one in the light of day without the masks and capes.
(That being said, it would really be for the best if they didn't have contact at all, but Dick is not that selfless, not with this. He doesn't think he could handle any less than the rare texts and rarer meetups.
He wouldn't be able to keep himself from chasing a running shadow once he knew it was there. Lily probably, definitely knew this, and planned accordingly. Dick supposes it should sting, that he's almost certain Lily wouldn't want anything to do with him if she wasn't wary of the alternative, but he chooses not to focus on that.)
Theoretically easily reachable, especially for the likes of the bats, but realistically-

that post from eveningdawn22 (I think??) about "not palatable (notably to tim) transfem jay" is only reassuring my ideas and thoughts for the lily todd au but in like a different specific-to-me and specific-to-this-au way
speaking from experience tim drake Would be weird about lily* (for context: lily as in lily todd, from an au where jay is a transfem Muslim, among other things)
this isn't like a character condemnation thing, this is me speaking from experience about what people are like about queer Muslims. (bruce would also be very Weird about it but i think the source would be first and foremost bruce/batman shit, particularly in relation to jay specifically, before we hit the like more general social aspects and whatnot)
people around here (new jersey, but also america in general) are just Like That. the white kids (esp rich white kids from those gated mansion communities or whatever) around here are especially Like That. i've been going to school with them for years and have even been "friends" with some (for a given definition of friends) and they all inevitably to some degree will be Like That. in fact the vast majority of the world is Like That, to varying degrees of severity, not just specifically because of the Muslim bit or the queer bit, but because of the two things together in one person.
(from my personal experiences, it's not always a malicious thing or an intentional thing, but it is inevitably demeaning and isolating in a particular way that's supposed to be acceptable and is brushed off as like, "people can have different political beliefs blah blah blah". microaggressions and the taint of Islamophobia and all that)
there are a lot of places and people that are theoretically queer friendly or push this idea of no prejudice, like my uni, but it's inevitably not actually that straightforward
(tim and tbh a lot of the batfam, or even superheroes/vigilantes in general, are or would be like that. not even your beloved heroes are immune to propaganda, overt or otherwise. jay is already basically a freak in canon. in the lily pot au, lily is a freak existence for arguably "worse" reasons. "crazy" white boy is vastly more preferable to transfem niqabi mom.)
there's a specific idea of queerness people have in mind when they talk or think about acceptance, and it's one that does not involve the majority of the real world or communities, and they react poorly when asked to confront that
none of this is new or revolutionary information or ideas; queer bipoc people, especially Black and Indigenous queer people, have been talking about their personal experiences with this for ages, and have been demanding attention and change for just as long
some people are receptive, some people are theoretically receptive, most people don't like confronting or acknowledging the status quo
but i almost never see those kinds of discussions about or from Muslims, especially Muslim women or hijabis (i specify this bc of the visibility of hijab)
if anything it seems like everyone is deeply uncomfortable with just Muslims existing in a way that is not in fact "Other", and having to think too hard about Muslims as people who can have similarities that Really don't fit certain narratives (e.g. devout hijabi who is also proudly queer) even "positive" ones is just so.... incomprehensible, and disgusting, to them
it's exhausting when even the blue-hair-and-pronouns cannot stand the blue-burqa-and-pronouns but everyone pretends that's like. fine. and acceptable. if they acknowledge it at all
tim drake would think lily todd was weird and freaky and he'd be with the majority on that
#the lily pot au#transfem jason todd#fem!jay multiverse#my au#rambling vaguely to myself mostly it's more for me than anyone else#tagging with the specific au because even if it's not specifically about it it's still deeply relevant#also no one ever listens on a good day. if you're browsing my blog or the tags the least you can do is read this and think a bit#long text#there's more to say on this but it's draining trying to get this out coherently and i have things to do. might come back to it later idk#queer Muslim#lgbt Muslim#does this count as like discourse or.

Ok so. The Etsy is not that much of an au because in the follow up reblog with more details I was going to bring up how Willis was going to start taking commissions and eventually have his own small business of sorts
ok but what if AU with a grieving, frustrated, vengeful, universe-hopping, arguably unstable in certain regards, still deeply loving Willis Todd who saves/helps all the Jason Todd variations he comes across in his travels, because perhaps one cannot defy their own fate but he can at least try to change the fates of the Jay's, maybe his family was doomed to die in his world but that doesn't mean he should let these elseworld versions of his daughter suffer if he can prevent it
and what if I called this the Are you there, Dad? It's me, Judy AU because unbeknownst to this same Willis Todd, his daughter Judy crawls out of her grave at some point, because it's not enough to be fated to die, she must also be cursed to have her death undone, and she's scared and confused and cold and ill and she wants her dad, she's calling for him over and over, but her dad isn't even in her world anymore, he's away where she can't reach, making sure no other version of her dies while she shakes in the rain against the wings of a marble angel named Catherine

@autisticrosewilson this is like more than a week late and not even everything, legit just forgot and caught up in life but here's some background on the au
Judy starts to sort of clue in to the trans thing pretty young and talks it out with her parents, and sure they support her but they can't afford to change anything about their lifestyle including buying new girly things Judy would like, but they also don't want Judy to just… not get to be a girl the way she wants? Like they feel shitty about going "it's perfectly fine if you're a girl and we'll love you as a daughter! anyway you can't actually stop being a boy." (That is not what they're doing but it's how they think they come across.)
Objectively Judy knows full well it's not in the budget to get her a new skirt or hair clips or whatever, but that doesn't matter because when you're in grade school that shit still devastates you, even if you understand. (Can you detect the projection.)
WillCat are somewhat troubled about what exactly they can do for Judy, more physically, and Willis goes fuck it I'm going to the library, paying taxes in Jersey has gotta be useful for something.
There happens to be one of those like neighborhood-aunties-doing-fiber-crafts clubs hosted there, and one of them catches Willis regularly browsing through texts about fashion and clothes design, and sets the trap to bring him in as a new member. So Willis learns fiber crafts and hey he's quite good at it! Catherine had kind of learned before, but she didn't really care for doing it herself beyond mending tears.
Time passes, Willis diligently practices, and eventually Judy gets surprised with some new clothes made from old things, like sheets made into dresses or scraps made into accessories. She's shocked and elated, this is arguably even better than just buying some fancy new things that'll further fuck up their finances because it's specially tailored for her by her dad.
ok but what if AU with a grieving, frustrated, vengeful, universe-hopping, arguably unstable in certain regards, still deeply loving Willis Todd who saves/helps all the Jason Todd variations he comes across in his travels, because perhaps one cannot defy their own fate but he can at least try to change the fates of the Jay's, maybe his family was doomed to die in his world but that doesn't mean he should let these elseworld versions of his daughter suffer if he can prevent it

wish I could draw more and better. I would like to show the visions of Lily. so many people would hate her because they're bigots or they hate Jason Todd in any capacity which kinda overlaps a bit ngl but ugh. the ones who could get it would get it
anyway like imagine after a few years since the sort of vacation where you accidentally ran into your older brother (who was not aware you were alive, let alone now a married(?) Muslim woman with a kid) who insistently has kept contact and checks in on you (secretly, upon your request) you finally feel kind of ready to try toeing the line of comfort and invite your brother over for a meal at your actual literal home while your little daughter is there too (she's more than meets the eye but you haven't actually broached the topic with your brother yet so as far as he's concerned you're dramatically overprotective and your daughter is no more of a weirdo than the average bloodthirsty kindergarten girl. the magic shit can come later. way later if you have anything to say about it.) and it doesn't go badly but it wasn't amazing in fact it was a pretty careful and awkward experience but your daughter is obviously fascinated with her uncle she barely knows except from your stories and your brother is obviously amused by her not to mention pleased that you're opening up a bit more in your own way and you let them sort of hang out and get to know each other on their own whilst you tidy up and while you're finishing up with washing the dishes you hear a loud crash and a gasp and oh fuck what the fuck happened what the fuck did they do
#transfem jason todd#muslim jason todd#the lily pot au#despite me messing around with weird feelings and projection the domestic angle of this au is greatly entertaining to me#like ah fuck my daughter just shattered an important magical artifact and#my brother let her bc he doesn't know what to feel about her but thinks she's cute and funny and unserious and lets her get away with shit#so now your home is haunted. 'dick I hope you're aware you're covering the cost of damages'

i love dc and batfam but before that i was and still very much am a mdzs stan so naturally i've kind of held up both wwx and jason up to the light at the same and examined them like lab specimens on their own and in comparison to each other. this is just a long tired midnight roundabout way of saying. what if loosely wwx-fied jason todd au. literally pluck some of my mdzs wip concepts and alter it to use for a messy jason todd resurrection au and toying with supernatural elements and vengeful angel type tropes. furthermore what if modern mdzs au loosely based on batfam/vigilantes and heroes, and i mutilate jason todd canon to suit my wwx needs.
#mdzs#jason todd#wei wuxian#surely I cannot be the only danmei/baihe + comics enjoyer#on that note. I need to utilize some toxic baihe#put sapphic jayrose in a situation and the situation is a ripoff of jwqs bc why not

If I write Lily (transfem Muslim Jason Todd) with the rare but much needed Muslim Ego TM and put myself in the mindset while doing so maybe I can eventually get over the self hate and deprecation by convincing myself that I too am unconditionally Allah's dear little creation and live happily ever after

thinking about the vague concept of Muslim Jason Todd that evolved from that one post about Catholic Jason Todd being boring I think and like. man it would be SUCH a projection fic esp considering i'm leaning more towards transfem jay specifically and i'm thinking about how i can utilize hijab for the story. very stiff and displeased and complicated reunion of sorts between her and batfam and she keeps them at arm's length at best but after a very long time and some developments a scene where she's with one of them (i'm inclined to say dick but maybe bruce) maybe for a meal or smth who knows and she finally shows her face (niqabi) and it's like oh. family.
#jason todd au#transfem jason todd#the lily pot au#islamophobes do not fucking interact#if this doesn’t make sense don't worry about it
