Week 8 Post
After viewing the lecture video on implementation, I think my client may face some challenges when implementing my recommendations. One of the many reasons social organizations fail is because it lacks the knowledge of mass collaboration. I think my client may struggle implementing one of my recommendations of expanding their social media presence on new platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. I recommended joining TikTok because one of their goals was to reach younger adults as an audience for new clients. I can see this being challenging for them because they haven’t used this platform before and to create a short video clip of financial management advice may be difficult.

Week 7 blogs
After completing the Hootsuite/Podium modules 3 and 4, I have learned sharing content online within a social media community is important. For example, when sharing content online using Instagram the user needs to think about a short description of the photo, provide a hashtag which will make the photo more discoverable, and end the description of the photo with an open-ended question for the audience to answer for engagement within the community.  I think the company GoPro does an excellent job posting on Instagram. They provide a short description of their photos and gives hashtags regarding their products such as #GoProHERO10.

Becoming a social organization has to do with the principles of effective content development and sharing. Sharing content online and active engagement with your audience will further build an online community. This is a great way for a business to grow and attract new clients and customers as many people use social media daily.

Week 6 Blog Post
After reading chapters 4 and 5 in the Social Organization, I think one of the most effective ways of building an online community through social media is active engagement with your audience. Continuing to stay engaged with your followers will keep them around and create new members as well. Also posting valuable content to your audience will keep their interests. Taco Bell does a great job engaging with their audiences on social media. They also do a good job informing customers when they’re bringing back an item on their menu. They have built their online community with more than 1.4 million followers.

After completing the Hootsuite/Podium module 4, I’ve learned how important customers and an audience can impact a business. I am working with Hantz Finance Group and consulting with them on growing their social media presences. One focus is engaging with their audience providing financial management tips through their social media accounts. For example, creating an online poll and survey for their audience to participate in helps give feedback on the topic. Expanding on new platforms, Hantz has been able to attract younger adults as an new audience.

Week 5 Blog
After watching “The Legal Side of Big Data,” consumers should be aware that their information is never safe. The information given online can always be tracked or found by another source. Before applying any information online, the consumer should always read the business privacy settings to ensure the information is safe and can’t be leaked. I think the best way to avoid threats presented by the big data is read privacy settings from businesses and see what kind of security systems are in place in case of the information being hacked.
After reading “The Internet’s Original Sin” and watching Maciej Ceglowski’s talk, I found it interesting how easily our personal information can be found or leaked online. I always thought the information was safe with the business, but that’s not always the case. Moving forward, I am going to be more cautious with providing information to businesses online after learning more about the big data.  Also, I am going to watch out for click bait ads or links that will give my information out to other companies for profitable gains.

Week 4 Post #2
After reading the article “Three reasons junk news spreads so quickly across social media” from the Oxford Internet Institute, I have learned even more about social media and how it works. The three main points given from this article is algorithms, advertising, and exposure. All three of these main points plays a major role in social media and how it impacts us using it.
Algorithms is a product of calculations used to suggest information for us and helps personalize content. From my own experience, the algorithm shapes my social media content with sports. I continue seeing more videos relating top stories or articles about players and teams. The most recent is how Tom Brady has retired from the NFL. I see more and more articles because I’m liking, commenting, and watching the videos posted.
Advertising is interesting to me because the social media platforms collect data from us and sell it to companies for profits. Especially how it mentions “click baits” and we continue watching the videos or reading the posts, but it’s not interesting to us. The company makes money on every video watched. I see many Youtubers using “click bait” titles for their videos to attract more audience to watch. More watched more money.
Exposure is often used by filtering the content on social media to limit what a user sees on the platform. I filter my content typically around sports. I would rather see content I enjoy reading or watching instead of things I don’t want to such as politics. I choose to remove these kind of posts and pages to see less relating politics.

Week 4 Post #1
I think a social media consultant should have the following qualities to be successful such as understanding the platform, communication skills, and marketing. Understanding the platform and how it works is important because the consultant will know the demographic and audience using the specific platform. For example, a social media consultant should know Snap chat is more typically used by younger ages. Another good quality is having good communications skills. Having good communication skills is important because it can lead to more productivity and will deliver clear messages to the audience. Lastly, I think having marketing skills is important because you can market the clients’ ideas in a business professional setting which can attract more audience to better understand the product. This can lead to more sales as well.
If I was acting as a social media consultant for myself, I would advise myself to post more on my social media accounts conveying clear messages to my audience. Posting more will attract more followers and expand my audience. This will lead to creating more connections personally and professional. Another piece of advice I would tell myself is to follow trends. This is important because this is what most of the audience on the social media platforms is wanting to watch and read. Joining the trend, I will be able to discuss my input on the situation and read my followers responses.

Week 3 The Social Dilemma
After watching the instructor’s lecture and the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma, I am shocked how the tech companies work. The Social Dilemma shares how tech companies such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter use big data and algorithms to control their users trying to addict them. They also use this information to keep records of activity on their platform. I don’t agree with this idea and method because it is a violation of my personal information and privacy. I want to use social media for my intentions not based off a control algorithm.
The big date and algorithms are powerful tools because it collects information to keep users returning to their platforms which forces users to spend more time on social media. This causes a major danger for users becoming more addictive to social media without even knowing it. When watching The Social Dilemma, the algorithms would send users a notification randomly if there wasn’t any activity on their profile. I personally think the problem can be dealt with by trying to stay off social media and limiting the screen time on our phones. We can also change our settings of how the data is collected and used to help our privacy when using social media accounts online.

Week 2 Blog #2
I really enjoyed this experiment of creating a social-media-free time span in my day. After what I found in tracking my social media usage from my log, I noticed most of my social media use is in the morning after I wake up still laying in bed. I immediate turn my alarm off and get on Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat so I am creating an experiment where I do not touch any social media in the morning after I wake up in efforts to start my day more productively.
My experience from this experiment was challenging for the first couple days which I know going into it. I still had the tendencies to get on Facebook or Instagram after waking up. I failed the first day, but I kept trying and each day I was less and less on social media in the morning after waking up. After my fifth day of trying this experiment, I can successfully say, I do not wake up and immediately get on social media platforms. This is a big relief for me!
This experiment has helped me in many ways especially starting my day more productively. After seeing these results, I am doing a lot more for myself in the morning by being able to work out and make breakfast. In the past I couldn’t do these things because I was on social media scrolling for hours. This experiment also has made me feel less addictive and dependent on social media. My mental health is clearer and more focused on myself.

Week 2 Blog #1
After watching Max Stossels talk and reading Emma Rathbone’s article, “Before the Internet” I am shocked how much social media/technology is truly in our daily lives. Social media influences my life constantly whether its watching videos on Facebook or checking people’s post. I feel at times I am addicted to social media being on it for hours, which I do not like. I would rather be making money working and spending the time with my girlfriend or friends having a face-to-face conversation while hanging out.
I think having the Internet available by a click of a button impacts our lives more than we know it. The Internet can be used as a great tool, but also can negatively impact users. For example, the Internet can help with researching topics, use of a calculator, online banking, shopping, and getting directions for road trips. The Internet can also be used as a negative tool by lack of face-to-face communication with friends/family, wasting time, excessive use of social media without a purpose and can lead to depression.
Every summer being up north in East Tawas, MI, there’s times when service is hard to find and I’m okay with that. It allows me to live in the moment and enjoy the little things about life. Putting my phone away for a few hours forces me to join more conversations which leads to meeting new friends instead of being on social media.
I would like to achieve more positives when using technology. For example, I want to update my LinkedIn account and expand my connections with fellow colleagues. This will help me further create my professional image and lead to more career options in the business world. Another intention using technology of mine is investing more in the stock market. With the market being very volatility right now, it’s a great time to invest.

Hi Classmates
My name is Lawrence Martin and I am currently a senior at Central Michigan University studying General Business: Applied Communication. I am 25 years old living with my girlfriend, Jenna and our 6 month old blonde lab, Owen. We recently moved into our house in Holly, Michigan.
I worked at Flint Assembly at General Motors being a material supervisor for 1 year, but I decided to return back to school to finish my bachelors degree. It was a great learning experience to be managing 50-60 employees in a fast-paced and stressful working environment. I loved seeing my team’s growth in our mission statements such as a ‘one team’ and ‘we own it’ attitude relating to material logistics in order to build heavy duty trucks.
My career goal is to finish my bachelors degree in Fall 2022. Once I receive my degree, I am planning to transfer from manufacturing at General Motors to Warren Tech Center to further my finance background.
I will be using this platform to post blogs from my BIS 315 class. I hope to see my blog page further my professional image and connect with more business colleagues in effort to expand business ideas.
One company who covers the principles well is General Motors. Their social media platforms continues to grow on Facebook, LinkedIn, Socrates, and Instagram. They use these platforms to reach out to their customers informing them about new innovated ideas and showing their products including Chevy, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac. General Motors truly takes advantage of social media to further expand their business.
