Dom flashed her a friendly smile. “Ain’t nothing wrong with that. Everyone’s new at something at some point. I was pretty freaked out when I first got here because I was young–having just gotten out of nursing school, and all–and this place is, like, a maze. I don’t gotta tell you that though.”
He held up an index finger. A moment please. After a moment of digging around in the pocket of his scrubs shirt, Dominic procured two caramel candies. “You want a Werther’s?”

Lavinia listened intently. He was a nurse. She felt the all too familiar ache in her chest at the realization that careers like that - or careers at all - weren’t really an option for her anymore, but tried to stifle the feeling. She didn’t want to be impolite. “At the old hospital, I think I got lost more often than not. They should really give you maps when you get admitted.”
Calmly and patiently, she waited as he fiddled through his pocket until he offered her one of her favorite candies. The principals office at her school used to keep them in a big bowl on the desk, and Lavinia would constantly grab them by the handful to keep in her pockets. “I’d love one. I’ve been craving this stuff like crazy since I got here. Thank you!”

“Oh… Naw, you’re fine—I didn’t think you were causing trouble.”
Dom held up his hands in a submissive gesture. He figured a change in conversation would lessen the tension “I’m Dominic, a nurse here. You don’t look too familiar. Are you new?”
Tumblr media
“Yes. I’ve been here for maybe... three or four days? I was in another hospital before this though, so I know how everything works, I guess.”
She crossed her arms over her chest and rested her shoulder against the wall. She had yet to meet many of the staff members here yet, as an intentional attempt to protect herself in case her reputation preceded her. “Oh, I’m Lavinia Margery. I’m a rescue patient.”

Dom had just returned from break, and was doing his typical rounds–more to stall the process of signing back in, than do anything productive–when he’d heard someone (or something) sniffling around the corner. Best case scenario, it was one of those dogs with the smushed noses. When he rounded the corner and saw a little girl, he wondered why he thought he’d have such luck.
“You doing okay over here?” he said, keeping his distance. In his experience it was never a good idea to get too close to an upset patient.
Lavinia quickly rose from the floor and smoothed out her clothing. She took a step back, away from the unfamiliar staff member in front of her. In the event that Carrie decided to make an appearance, she wanted a healthy amount of space between them. If she ran into any more trouble with staff members or patience, she wasn’t sure that she would be able to handle it.
“I wouldn’t go straight to okay, but I promise I’m not trying to cause trouble or anything.”

-- implode.
Heavy heels clicked along the cold tiled floors of the hospital. Long, varnished fingernails drug across the walls of the hallway as she walked. She walked slowly, with her hips swaying intentionally. Carrie was furious about being locked up. There was absolutely no one and nothing to do in this place. She knew that Lavinia was lonely, which she thought was pathetic. Lavinia didn’t deserve friends in the first place. Carrie, however, needed to meet someone to help pass the time. Regardless of how the time was passing.
Her head was pounding, she needed a cigarette. Or even better, something a little harder. Even though Lavinia never smoked or did drugs or did... well, anything, Carrie had always been quick to indulge in whatever she could get her hands on. She sighed. It seemed like everything she wanted to do was a million miles out of reach, these days. With a sigh, she began closely examining her fingernails, before bumping into someone else. She was immediately angered, but tried to contain it just in case he happened to be a staff member or someone that could get her into trouble.
“Want to maybe watch your fuckin’ step?”

Hearing the sound of crying, Stella had decided to find the source and make herself useful. It was amazing how everyone here needed her help. “Everyone here is a bunch of babies. Why do you guys cry all the time?”
Tumblr media
She quickly tried to clean herself up as she saw the much younger girl approach her. Lavinia had been the youngest person in the hospital before this, and she wondered what this little girl could possibly doing here all alone. Her pink lips curled up in a slight smile at her words.
“That’s a good question. You must be really smart and grown up. What’s your name?”

She had been crying since she got here. It was almost impossible not to. She was aimlessly wandering the hallways, trying to acquaint herself with the ward and where everything was when suddenly she was struck with a wave of emotion. Lavinia leaned her back against the wall and slid down to the ground, stifling a sob. As she heard someone coming, she used her sleeves to wipe her eyes and runny nose to try and make it less obvious.
