The mixture of ghostly, dripping grey and the tired, gloomy green of mosses, ferns, lichens and bushes has a rather oppressive and creepy fairy-tale effect than encouraging. Mt Taranaki (or formerly Mt Egmont) is a beautiful, perfectly formed stratovolcano and is located in the west of the North Island of New Zealand. Climbing the summit is considered dangerous because accidents happen here all the time & the weather is unpredictable. The last eruption occurred in 1775 and volcanologists agree that the volcano is only "sleeping" and not extinct. Read more about campervan hire New Zealand here. A long time ago Taranaki belonged to the centre of the North Island, where he lived peacefully with the other mountain gods Tongariro, Ngaurohoe and Ruapehu. There are several Maori legends that explain how he came to the West.

The diverse landscapes are home to coastal, mountain and rainforests, alpine, subalpine and swamp plants and are home to numerous endemic plants. A special feature is the "Goblin Forest" on the eastern side of Mt Taranaki. They all vary in length, many of them are hikes of several days and I have neither a map nor a sleeping bag with me. The layered volcano, which is just over 2500 meters high, is located in the west of New Zealand's North Island and is surrounded by the Egmont National Park.
