The mixture of ghostly, dripping grey and the tired, gloomy green of mosses, ferns, lichens and bushes has a rather oppressive and creepy fairy-tale effect than encouraging. Mt Taranaki (or formerly Mt Egmont) is a beautiful, perfectly formed stratovolcano and is located in the west of the North Island of New Zealand. Climbing the summit is considered dangerous because accidents happen here all the time & the weather is unpredictable. A long time ago Taranaki belonged to the centre of the North Island, where he lived peacefully with the other mountain gods Tongariro, Ngaurohoe and Ruapehu. There are several Maori legends that explain how he came to the West.
