This Philly Writer’s Book Is Being Turned Into an FX Horror Series
City
If you haven’t yet read Carmen Maria Machado's debut sci-fi/horror short story collection, Her Body and Other Parties, Halloween’s the perfect time.
Carmen Maria Machado | Tom Storm Photography
Since it was published last year, Carmen Maria Machado‘s debut short story collection, Her Body and Other Parties, has been raking in awards and nominations.
It won the Bard Fiction Prize, the John Leonard Prize, the Shirley Jackson Award, the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction, the American Booksellers Association’s Indies Choice Book Awards, among other honors — and it was a finalist for the National Book Award, the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction, the Kirkus Prize and the Dylan Thomas Prize … just to name a few, of course. There are plenty more.
Now Machado, who lives in West Philly, will see her collection turned into a TV show. FX has acquired the rights to the 2017 book and will transform it into a horror series. The adaptation is being written and produced by Gina Welch, who’s known for Feud and The Terror.
I can *finally* say something! HER BODY AND OTHER PARTIES is officially in development over at @FXNetworks. FX has made some of my favorite shows in the past few years (Atlanta, The Americans) & I'm ridiculously excited to see what comes next. 💥 https://t.co/12smhw8xdP
— Carnage "The Hatchet" Machado (@carmenmmachado) October 15, 2018
In August, Machado won a Best of Philly for best writer on the rise.
We first wrote about her about a year ago, after the collection was published. In a sit-down interview at the University of Pennsylvania, where she’s a writer-in-residence, she told us all about growing up in Allentown, her love of Law and Order, working at Lush, and the subtle and not-so-subtle ways we reinforce sexism and misogyny.
Her Body and Other Parties weaves together eerie sci-fi/horror stories that, at their core, all probe topics like sexism, gender, queerness and sensuality. It feels a bit like reading a modern version of Hans Christian Andersen — if Hans Christian Andersen were an outraged woman and alive today. And really, you should read it, if you haven’t already — Halloween is the perfect time for the spooky book.
No word yet on when the FX series will debut.

There’s a Tropical Beer Garden With a Sandbox in Fairmount Park Right Now
An indoor winter beer garden just popped up inside Fairmount Park’s Horticulture Center with eats from Philly-favorite food trucks, plus beer, wine, and cocktails. The pop-up, dubbed Getaway at the Greenhouse, is running now through Sunday, February 10. It’s free to get in, but tickets have to be reserved (and are going quick).
The food for sale includes ice cream from Weckerly’s, dumplings and egg rolls from Dump N Roll, burgers from Spot Burgers, and banh mi from QT Vietnamese Sandwich. Also in the lineup: Dre’s Water Ice, Mama’s Meatballs, Dos Hermanos Tacos, Island Shack, and Kono Pizza.
To drink, look for summery brews like Yard’s Pale Ale, Flying Fish Outside IPA, Dogfish Head Sea Quench Ale, and Narraganset Del’s Summer Shandy. The beer is going for $6. Wine and cocktails are $10 each.
The Horticulture Center, which has been around since 1979, is always kept at a balmy temperature to keep its greenery comfortable, making it a cozy escape from the February cold. The beer garden ups the appeal even further with a grassy picnic area with lawn games, a giant sandbox with lounge chairs and toys, and a vaguely Moroccan-themed seating area.
The Moroccan-themed lounge at Getaway at the Greenhouse

On February 10 and 11, look for free family-friendly activities, including screenings of Jungle Book and Jumanji, a cameo from Philadelphia Zoo animals, and live music.
The food and drinks are available Wednesday to Friday from 6 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the day, during the week only, you can bring your own picnic (and non-alcoholic drinks).
There’s an onsite parking lot, which is convenient since it’s in the middle of the massive park.
Check out the full schedule of events here.

Dalvin Cook questionable, Trae Waynes out for Vikings
Getty Images
The Vikings got running back Dalvin Cook back on the practice field Friday, but it’s unclear whether he’ll be on the field against the Eagles on Sunday.
Cook is dealing with a hamstring injury and he has been listed as questionable for the trip to Philly. Cook did not play the last time the Vikings visited the Eagles as the torn ACL he suffered early in his rookie season kept him from taking part in the NFC Championship Game.
Latavius Murray, Mike Boone and Roc Thomas would be the Minnesota backs if Cook can’t play.
Cook is the only Viking listed as questionable, but they did rule out four players. Cornerback Trae Waynes remains in the concussion protocol, which will leave cornerback duties to Xavier Rhodes, Mike Hughes and Mackensie Alexander. Defensive back Marcus Sherels (ribs) will also miss the game.
Defensive ends Everson Griffen (knee/not injury related) and Tashawn Bower (ankle) are also out, so the Vikings will be thin at that position.

Stina, a Mediterranean BYO, Sets Its Opening in South Philly
News
Chef Bobby Saritsoglou is back with a mission-driven restaurant serving pizza, handmade pasta, shawarma, and more.
Stina | Photo by Society Hill Films
Stina, the mission-driven Mediterranean BYO from Bobby Saritsoglou and Christina Kallas-Saritsoglou, will open this Friday, May 24th.
This is Saritsoglou’s first place of his own: the chef left his longtime post at Greek spot Opa back in summer of 2017. A year later, he and his wife announced they’d be opening Stina — she’s the restaurant’s namesake — at 1705 Snyder Avenue.
Kallas-Saritsoglou, a co-founder of nonprofit Philly AIDS Thrift, decorated the eclectic, 900 square-foot space, which seats 28, with vintage art and tchotchkes. She also used 25 reclaimed wooden doors — which Saritsoglou spent years collecting for this very purpose — to line the lower walls of the space.
The couple, who live just a few blocks from the restaurant, plan to donate a portion of each month’s sales to organizations serving the community, hold monthly charity nights, and make the space available to local organizations for meetings on Monday evenings and mornings when the restaurant is closed.
The menu at the Mediterranean BYO is built around a huge Morello Forni wood-fired oven imported from Italy, which does mean pizza — but also a lot more. There are mezze like fire-roasted veggies and kabobs and borek, a Turkish pastry Saritsoglou fills with smoked cheese and honey. The chef’s take on pide, Turkish filled breads, resemble Georgian khachapuri stuffed with lamb sausage or mushrooms.
Other dishes include a suite of pastas — including manti, Turkish dumplings — salads, and sandwiches in the form of chicken shawarma, falafel and an Italian hoagie (this is South Philly, after all).

Doors open at 5 p.m this Friday, May 31st. Opening weekend hours on Friday and Saturday are 5 p.m. until 11 p.m.; starting next week, hours at Stina are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Delivery will begin later in June.

This drone startup raised $16M in Series A funding
Grays Ferry-based drone startup Exyn Technologies just closed on its Series A funding round, raising $16 million that the company said will go toward expanding its global reach and accelerating its technology development.
Exyn Technologies, a spinout of Penn’s GRASP Lab, uses drones and ground-based robots to collect data from places where maps and GPS don’t exist.
Last year, the team sent a drone down to scour the walls of a Latin American mine so they could build 3D models of the mine’s structure and spot possible safety risks using the company’s exynAI software.
The longterm objective is to turn the mapping offering into a standalone product that can be shipped to mines and used by mining companies themselves, CEO Nader Elm told Technical.ly Philly last year.
Exyn announced Friday that it closed the funding round, which was led by London-based investment firm Centricus, with Yamaha Motors Ventures, U.S. intelligence community venture arm In-Q-Tel, Corecam Family Office, and Red and Blue Ventures newly participating, and IP Group Plc reinvesting.
“We see significant potential for Exyn’s technology to improve efficiencies in sectors including mining and look forward to supporting Exyn’s next phase of growth,” a Centricus spokesperson said of the investment.
To date, Exyn has raised $20 million. The company said the new flush of capital will go toward commercial growth, expanding its global reach and developing offerings for customers in new industries.
An image of Exyn’s technology. (Courtesy photo)
The company will also work on accelerating its tech development to “bring to market advanced swarming capabilities and move its autonomy intelligence to ground-based robots,” it said in a statement Friday.
“Exyn has demonstrated the potential to revolutionize efficiency, increase productivity, and dramatically reduce human exposure to unsafe environments,” Elm said. “And that’s just one application. We are only beginning to scratch the surface of how impactful true autonomy will be.”

Phillies get Jean Segura from Mariners for Santana, Crawford
PHILADELPHIA --
The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired two-time All-Star shortstop Jean Segura from the Seattle Mariners for veteran slugger Carlos Santana and infielder J.P. Crawford.
The Phillies also get left-hander James Pazos and righty Juan Nicasio in the deal announced Monday by both teams.
It's the second major deal of the day for the Mariners. They also sent second baseman Robinson Cano and closer Edwin Diaz to the New York Mets for five players, including two top prospects and outfielder Jay Bruce.
Segura hit .304 with 10 homers, 63 RBIs, 20 stolen bases and had a .341 on-base percentage last season. He is signed through 2022 and is owed $60 million.
Santana batted a career-low .229 with 24 homers, 86 RBIs and a .352 OBP in his first season in Philadelphia after signing a $60 million, three-year contract.
Crawford, a 2013 first-round pick, hit .214 in only 49 games. He's been plagued by injuries and has only 187 career at-bats.
Pazos was 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA in 60 appearances, covering 50 innings. He struck out 45 and walked 15.
Nicasio was 1-6 with a 6.00 ERA in 46 games. He pitched in two games for the Phillies in 2017.

How affordable is buying a home in Philly versus the rest of the country?
A study examining the least and most affordable cities in terms of home buying puts Philly squarely in the middle.
The report, which was put together by housing data site RealtyHop, compiled data on average house prices, property taxes, and median household income, and compared various major U.S. cities based on the data.
Philly, which has an average house price of $200,000, and an average household income of $40,000, was ranked 59th most costly.
Cities taking the top five spots were Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Oakland. Pittsburgh, which has an average house price of $194,000, comes in just a few spots after Philly.

Mapping Philly’s most walkable neighborhoods
Ann Strickland, 87, has lived in the southwest corner of Eastwick for 37 years.
Her small community of single-family homes sits right across from the John Heinz National Wildlife Conservatory at Tinicum.
Not far from Philadelphia International Airport, the area is isolated, and barren of the attractions that line the streets in busy parts of the city, where residents can have most of their needs met without getting behind a steering wheel, or summoning someone who is.
Which is why an online tool from New York University School of Medicine shows that Strickland lives in the least walkable area of the city. The City Health Dashboard rated the area southwest of the Bartram Avenue and 84th Street intersection, part of the 19153 zip code, three out of 100 on the scale of walkability.
The metric quantifies the “density of intersections and residences” and accessibility to places such as grocery stores, parks, and restaurants.
Strickland, who lives with her daughter Lisa, 56, doesn’t mind getting in the car when she needs to pick up groceries, or medicine from the pharmacy. She and her daughter both like to drive and enjoy the privacy of living in an area with little foot traffic.
“The whole time we’ve been out here it’s been really nice,” she said.
Eastwick isn't the only section of Philadelphia to rank low on the walkability scale. Other areas with ratings below 10 include parts of Girard Estates and Packard Park in South Philadelphia as well as Somerton, Millbrook and Bustleton in the Northeast. According to researchers, areas like these tend to have higher rates of obesity and diabetes than places that are more pedestrian-friendly.
Not surprisingly, the most walkable sections of the city — several census tracts scored perfect 100s, and many ranked above 90— can be found in Center City and include Rittenhouse Square, Fitler Square, Logan Square, and Society Hill, where residents pay a premium for commutes that can be traveled on foot.
Citywide, Philadelphia scored 79 out of 100, compared to an average of 42.8 across the 500 U.S. cities included in the NYU dataset.

“Undersized” prospects deliver big performances
You can’t have a strong performance from a team’s offense or defense without dominant individuals within the unit. For running back Trayveon Williams and linebacker Devin Bush, that was the case in how their attention grabbing play catalyzed big wins for their teams.
For Williams, his 31 carry performance for Texas A&M resulted in 238 yards and a touchdown. Williams broke four tackles and got almost 140 of his yards after contact (per PFF), continuing his career trend of creating big plays for the Aggies. The 5’9, 200 pound junior is short but backs a lot of punch and agility at the position. Teams should not overlook a back who is making big plays week in and and week out.
Speaking of undersized, Michigan’s star linebacker Devin Bush helped the Wolverines hold Rutgers to seven points in a blow out. While the Scarlet Knights are a lowly opponent, top tier prospects should deliver on weeks like this. Bush didn’t fill up the stat sheet, but he flew around the field and made plays in coverage and against the run. There will no doubt be debate about where the 5’11” linebacker belongs on an NFL defense, but there’s no doubt he belongs on one.

Doctors Warn Of C-Section ‘Epidemic’ As Global Rates Double
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook Twitter
PHILADELPHIA (CBS Local) — Caesarean section birth rates have nearly doubled in two decades worldwide, even reaching “epidemic” proportions in some countries, doctors warned Friday.
According to research published in The Lancet, the number of women delivering babies via C-section doctors rose to 29.7 million worldwide in 2015. That is the most recent year for which complete data is available. That’s up from 16 million in 2000, or 12 percent of all births, and significantly higher than the 10-15% considered medically necessary.
The results also highlight a huge gap in childbirth care between rich and poor mothers, with the life-saving surgery unavailable to many women in poor countries and over-used in richer ones.
The procedure can save lives when complications occur, such as bleeding, fetal distress, hypertensive disease, and babies in abnormal position. However, the surgery can also create complications and side effects, including higher risks for future births.
“We call on healthcare professionals, hospitals, funders, women and families to only intervene in this way when it is medically required,” said Marleen Temmerman, an expert from Aga Khan University in Kenya and Ghent University in Belgium who co-led the research.
“In cases where complications do occur, C-sections save lives, and we must increase accessibility in poorer regions, making C-sections universally available, but we should not overuse them.”
The study found C-sections were overused in North America, Western Europe, Latin America, South Asia and the Caribbean and underused in parts the west and central Africa region.

Pineville Fishtown, an Offshoot of a 277-Year-Old Bucks County Tavern, Lasts Less Than a Year in the City
Pineville Fishtown, the bi-level bar, restaurant, and piano lounge that opened at 2448 E. Huntingdon Street last summer, is now closed. Father and son restaurateurs Andrew and Drew Abruzzese, who also own the historic Pineville Tavern in Bucks County, opened the city offshoot in August 2018. Chef Drew Abruzzese had recently rolled out a new menu at the restaurant, switching from a traditional appetizer-and-entree setup to more trendy small plate selections. He also added CBD-infused dishes and cocktails.
The original Pineville Tavern is in a building that’s housed some sort of gathering spot — a general store, a hotel, a tavern — since the mid-18th century. The Abruzzese family bought it in 1989. It serves an American menu of steaks, burgers, crab cakes, fried chicken, potato skins, and the like.
The Philly outpost — not exactly in Fishtown; it’s where Port Richmond, Fishtown, and Kensington blend into each other — started out similarly, with the Abruzzeses saying they wanted to bring the original’s “greatest hits” to the city. They switched tactics about six months in, saying in a press release: “[W]e realized that diners in the city have a different style of dining. Rather than one appetizer and/or an entree, the younger set prefer ordering multiple items and sharing them all, so we made some adjustments.”
As for the CBD, Drew Abruzzese said, “We also realized that the cannabidiol craze seems to have seriously taken off. We’re excited to provide this option for our guests who want to take the edge off.”
In a statement about the restaurant’s sudden closure this week, Andrew Abruzzese wrote:
“When building owner Allan Domb and I first met at Huntingdon and Gaul Streets, we thought we had incredible potential to create a solid concept that the neighborhood would adore. It turns out that we were a bit early for the neighborhood, as Philly’s northern gentrification hasn’t quite hit our area yet. We received a lot of great press and we thought the casual dining concept that works in our home base in Bucks County would be a hit down here, too. We were hoping to appeal to millennials, their parents, baby boomers and longtime residents, but we just couldn’t do enough business to sustain the operation.”
Councilman Domb, a noted developer, owns many properties throughout the city.

2019 NFL Mock Draft: New York Jets nab Quinnen Williams
When I picked the Jets, I wasn’t entirely sure who I would take for them. They have needs all over the board for sure. They could use more pass rush to give that defense some pop considering their best pass rusher only generated 7 sacks. They could also use an offensive tackle, someone to protect Sam Darnold from dying the death of 1,000 David Carr’s and who can give Le’Veon more than 1.2 seconds to find a hole.
And then Quinnen Williams fell directly into my lap.
Quinnen Williams is, in my humble opinion, the best player in the draft. I could see a 1A/1B argument with Bosa but I like him just a little more than I do the younger Bosa. Despite only playing one year, due to being stuck behind other 1st round NFL talent in Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen, Quinnen dominated in practically every game he played. He’s got some of the best pass rush moves I’ve seen, he’s got the strength to push offensive lineman into the backfield (or into the QB as Drew Lock knows) and he’s got a nose for the ball and never gives up on a play. This video shows how relentless he is and his ability to just dominate a game. Look at 0:40 specifically if you want to see Quinnen literally tackle Drew Lock with another man for a safety.
I understand there might be some fit concerns for Quinnen but I think they are overblown for the Jets especially considering their defensive coordinator and Quinnen’s build and talents.
First and foremost, I don’t actually believe the Jets are sticking with a 3-4... at least full time. While I’d hate to doubt the authenticity of a man who paid his players to injure people, I find it hard to believe that Gregg Williams, fresh off a season where he made the Browns look like a real football team, would take a job that fully required him to abandon the defense he has had his whole career - an aggressive pass-rushing 4-3 - for a 3-4. My personal belief is he agreed to run a 3-4 as his front defense, mainly so the Jets didn’t have to overhaul their front 7 overnight, while picking up pieces to eventually run a full 4-3. Regardless of that, I think we’ll still see the Jets run more than a few 4-3 reps this year and drafting Quinnen gives them extra ability to do this as he can easily shift inside and fill the gaping hole of IDL where the Jets have Steve McLendon and... no one else.
In the meantime, Quinnen’s height, weight and speed are more than good enough to settle in as a 3-4 DE alongside Leonard Williams who is coming into a contract year. If there are concerns he is too small to do so, it is worth noting that he is actually a little heavier than Williams. He can play the 3-4 role as his run-stopping is excellent, keeping runners confined to the first level, while also giving the Jets a potent pass rusher at a spot that 3-4 teams may not always have one.
His athletic testing backs up the points made above. Even with limited testing, he had one of the best combines ever for a DT by @MathBomb testing scoring nearly a perfect 10. He’s a versatile, athletic, and skilled player who excels in practically every area.
To be blunt, the Jets are a bad team. If they are serious about being like the Eagles, Rams, or Bears, and competing while Darnold is young and cheap than what they need above all is talent. They shouldn’t go looking for good players who fit their stated D a little better than Quinnen when they have an elite player sitting right in front of them, left there by the favor of the draft gods. Quinnen Williams has shown in his time at Bama that he’s the type of player you take and let the talent and skill make it work.
So go do the damn thing Jets.
