Rants and Reviews of a Late-Night Reader
5 posts
I am an avid reader. I will forgoe an entire night's sleep just to read a new book to it's completion. This will be a place for me to write reviews on books I read that I love (and maybe even a few that I don't LOVE). I hope to do justice to the books I read and hopefully introduce new worlds to fellow readers. My Main blog: @mirrorsandmoonlight

My Disappearance
Okay, so I suck. Apparently school overwhelmed me more than I thought it would because this is the first time I have been on tumblr since Spring. I know that this page wasn’t even popular before I disappeared, but I still apologize for my absence. It won’t be very frequent (I might forget my password again and have to go through that god-awful process to make a new one) but I will try to post some reviews on here again.
It might not be popular still, there might not be any notes and no one will ever see these reviews. But I’ll still do it, just in case.

They say “time heals,” but even now, I know that’s a lie. What people really mean is that eventually you’ll get used to the pain. You’ll forget who you were without it; you’ll forget what you looked like without your scars.

Fall in Love With This, “Happily Ever After”
~Review Written on April 12th, 2017~
**To preface, this is the sequel to a book written by Kelly Oram called, “Cinder & Ella” (which you guys totally need to check out before you read this!) I’ve been excitedly waiting for this book for a long while now so please excuse any of my craziness in this review. It came out yesterday and I was gonna write the review for its Book Birthday, but unfortunately I fell asleep.**
And go.
In the first book we meet Cinder and Ella, a pair of geeks who met online through Ella’s blog. Cinder made a comment on something Ella said about a book series that they both love, one that she simply HAD to fight him on. After that, they became best friends--but they never told each other their real names or where they lived. They were strictly online friends, even after they realized they loved each other (that way), and it became that classic story of wanting to move forward but they were too scared of the unknown to do so. (So sad...)
***SPOILER ALERT***
After Cinder tries to breach that gap between them by asking for Ella’s address to send her a present for her birthday, she gets into a car accident with her mother before she can reply to Cinder. Ella’s body is burned badly and she was in the hospital for eight months--for the most part in a coma--while Cinder thought that she was dead after he saw she wasn’t updating her blog. He spiraled into despair thinking the woman he loved was dead and basically he became a playboy and a douche. Until Ella “miraculously comes back from the dead.” Then, everything goes back to normal for them--except they begin talking on the phone for the first time. It’s an adorable story and an even more adorable relationship between two nerds. So it’s perfect that their first in-person meeting is at FantasyCon (oh the wonderful irony!)
***SPOILER OVER! I AM SORRY***
In this sequel we join them as they find their happily ever after. (Swoon! Heart eyes) Ella and Cinder (Brian Oliver actually. Of course his name isn’t really Cinder!) go through a lot of heartache, and where you think Brian’s fame and the fame of “Cinder and Ella” would break them up so much that you’re anxiously waiting for it to happen, you can relax. Kelly’s not evil, this IS their “Happily Ever After” story. Oh my god, the whole book I was worried that something would ruin their relationship that I almost cried every time Ella was her awesome self and fought back against all the power-hungry people in the business.
This book (and it’s predecessor) are perfect for anyone who loves an absolutely sweet love story with humorous and dorky characters. I would personally recommend these books (and Kelly’s other YA romance books) because of the real problems and circumstances that she throws her characters’ way. Cinder and Ella, and their friends, are the types of characters you wish you could pull out of their stories and bring them into your life. They are the type of people you hope to one day meet IRL. This story makes you believe happily ever afters are possible and will maybe even have you saying one day,
“How about, ‘And they lived happily ever after’?” --Cinder, Cinder & Ella

Watch Out for “My Fairly Dangerous Godmother”
~Review written on April 10th, 2017~
**To preface, I have read this book before when it first came out, but I decided to re-read it tonight and remembered how much I loved it, and it’s predecessors. (THAT’S RIGHT! This book is the THIRD in a series by Janette Rallison!)**
And go.
Okay, so what you need to know is that Chrysanthemum Everstar (a.k.a Chrissy) is a fairy-godmother-in-training, and she’s not that great at her job. She’s a bit ditzy and full of herself, but she does care on some level for her charges (but she’s a fairy, that’s their de facto personality.) Anyway, Chrissy really wants to get into FGU, Fairy Godmother University to become a full-fledged fairy godmother. The only problem is she always somehow messes up her assignments, like stranding them in the 12th century or something (who hasn’t done that?)
These books are each about different charges of Chrissy’s as she tries to show her “profound abilities and great prowess” in her field to hopefully gain acceptance to FGU. “My Fairly Dangerous Godmother” is Chrissy’s most recent attempt at gaining admittance. Mercedes (Sadie) Ramirez longs to be a famous singer (and win the affections of pop star, Jason Prescott) so she tries out for a singing competition but it doesn’t turn out well for her AT ALL. Her sad state afterwards is what allows her to be considered for the FGA (Fairy Godmother Association) “pitiable and wretched damsel outreach program.” And yes, that is as insulting as it sounds.
So Sadie signs a contract to be granted three wishes with the clause that states if she tells a lie, her nose will start growing like Pinocchio. She, of course, messes up her first couple wishes and then with her third, Chrissy twists the wish so that Sadie ends up in “The Twelve Dancing Princesses” tale! The only way she can get home is to find a way to retrieve a magical goblet from the Unseelie Queen for Chrissy before a modern thief named Donovan, who is also trapped in the story until the goblet is stolen due to a meddling fairy. But Sadie will need Donovan’s help to steal it from right under the Queen’s nose.
Janette Rallison takes magic and fairy tales in a new direction with her books. She has an inexperienced and flighty teenage fairy grant wishes to young girls in distress, messing up their lives and putting them in danger. The original stories are re-written in a great way and the characters are hilarious. (I love the banter between the characters in these books, especially Donovan when he’s making fun of Jason Prescott!) As with all great characters, Sadie matures throughout the story and her awful wish outcomes teach her that what she thinks she wants, isn’t what thinks it is. Also, the love interests she makes for the main characters in each book make the perfect book boyfriends (and they’re all so wonderful, it’s hard to pick a favorite!)
If you’re a fan of fairy tales, humor, magic and adorkable guys--then you should check out her books!

“Geekerella” is a Masterful Modern Re-telling
~Review written on April 4th, 2017~
**Okay, to preface this review, I didn’t make a tumblr account until today but I started reading this book the minute it was put into my Kindle library so I wanted to fangirl and write a review of it now that I have this account.**
And go.
I pre-ordered “Geekerella” months ago on Amazon because I love fairy tale re-tellings with my whole heart.  I started reading the story and I just couldn’t stop! I had to take regular breaks while reading to just laugh, shake my head, or quietly squeal for some reason or another (my dad was sleeping, so I had to to be quiet) because it was all so nerdy and geeky!
This story was likable in so many ways--from the main character with her great (and slightly obsessive) love for her fandom we can all understand, to all of the great geeky references throughout the book. (One of my favorites was when the “Back to the Future” fandom was represented!)
Oh do I wish that I could say more about it, but I fear that I will spoil the lovely surprises awaiting you once the book has been opened!
But I will say this book was full of laughter, fun, sarcasm, and the perfect amount of nerdiness. It has lovable characters from a green-haired aspiring fashion designer, to an invisible nerd all alone, to an insecure actor getting to play his dream role and letting his inner geek out to shine. I’d say it is the perfect read for anyone who loves fairy tale re-tellings, has ever been to a Con of any sort (and loved it!), or who simply love a fun YA romance sprinkled with just the right amount of weird.
I literally stayed up from 12:30 a.m. when the book was FINALLY placed in my library, to about 4:45 a.m. when I regrettably finished the book. I forsook an entire night’s sleep because I couldn’t stop reading this book. I wanted to cry when I got to the end because of course, I DIDN’T WANT IT TO END! But all wonderful things must come to an end, the great thing is though, we can always go back and visit.
“Look to the stars. Aim. Ignite.”
I’ll catch you on the observation deck Stargunners!
