“Are you sure you won’t take him back this time?” Skepticism was written all over her face and it infuriated me. “Yes, because there’s nothing to chase after. The feelings are still there but there’s no honesty, loyalty or trust anymore so what would I even be chasing? A healthy relationship cannot exist without those three things. So yeah, it’s really over and he’ll regret letting me go one day. ”

SSquad Spoilers
Since Harley’s introduction in BTAS fans have been romanticizing the relationship between her and the Joker. What’s really sad is that Harley finding independence from him has only been a recent development within the last five or six years. The DCAU ended with the implication that Harley either died after helping the Joker torture and mutilate Tim Drake, or was the grandmother of the Harley twins in Batman Beyond (it’s left open ended).
In some comic interpretations the Joker did love Harley (as a possession and object not actual healthy love obviously), and in others he found her to be a lackey and nuisance.
In Suicide Squad I thought it was clear that Joker viewed Harley as a possession, a pet project he manipulated, created, and thus owned. I do think the more physically abusive aspects of their relationship were toned down or outright cut from the movie. It’s a complex feeling, because I don’t want to see Harley physically abused, but it’s unfortunate the physical abuse is one of the few ways people understand and acknowledge abuse in a relationship is happening.
The Joker’s manipulation and control over Harley is much more subtle due to these cuts. Joker purposely manipulates her when she’s his doctor so he can get out of Arkham, he tortures her to make her more susceptible to his influence, and manipulates her into jumping into a chemical bath. This scene I can already see people romanticizing as the Joker “saving Harley” or “going back for her”. But that’s not the Joker’s intent. He has no interest in “saving Harley” so much as further owning her. The reason she’s in that situation is because of the Joker. Later, after she’s become “Harley Quinn” she’s less Joker’s partner than his object. He places her on display, uses her as an excuse to kill others, and leaves her for dead when confronted with Batman.
So the abuse is there, but subtle and I’m still on the fence about how I feel about that. Because abuse can be very subtle in any relationship (romantic or platonic). I thought it was very clear that the Joker didn’t actually care about Harley as a person like she wanted him too.
I’m wondering, given the abrupt ending and cut Joker scenes, if we’ll see further development in Harley if her would-be solo/team up movie (or a Squad sequel) is officially green lit. It’s canon that Harley repeatedly goes back to the Joker, even when her friends or other love interests (namely Poison Ivy) tell her point blank he’s terrible for her. It’s only a more recent development in her history that she’s pulled away from his influence and found independence through her Squad friends (namely Floyd) and Ivy (along with members of her gang). I would hope that we eventually see her character develop to the point where she realizes her relationship with the Joker is abusive and finds her independence. But that remains to be seen.
I’m not upset that Harley was still in love with the Joker, that’s been her canon for decades and it’s unfortunately realistic that victims often return to their abuses repeatedly (which is also Harley’s canon). I do hope we see progression for Harley beyond that. I didn’t feel she was in a place at the end of the film where she realized the Joker was abusive towards her, but did find peace in being without him. Which is a step forward for her.
I’m not sure how the DCEU will shape up, So far the movies each seem to influence and inter-connect, but we’re only three movies in so that remains to be seen.
As for people romanticizing their relationship, I’m completely unsurprised and still disappointed.
