When Death comes for the Midnight Prince

Their robes brush past the

Sleeping princess,

Who cracks an eye to see who woke her.

Death tuts and shakes their head.

"Back to sleep now, young one.

I am not here for you."

Wandering still through the night,

Soundless,

Death comes to the kitchen,

Dark as the night itself.

"Come now," Death says, squinting.

"We do not have time to play this game."

Glowing eyes slowly open,

Small stars in this space.

"There you are. Come along."

The eyes stare back,

Unblinking.

Death sighs, "Now really,

You act as though you've never

Seen me.

There's no time to waste,

My boy."

The eyes blink, finally, slowly.

With a hint of plea to their voice,

Death asks, "Must I?"

Another silent beat passes,

The tick of a clock hand,

Before Death concedes.

As they approach the line of

Shadow,

They melt into the void,

Becoming one

With the darkness.

It is silent once more.

The eyes blink again,

And creaky joints crack

As he stretches.

The clock ticks on.

For you see,

There is a magic to midnight

That only the Midnight Prince

Knows.

The rituals,

Watchful lookout,

To keep the magic at bay,

Until the unending hunger

And relentless pursuit of

Tomorrow,

Allow Death to visit

During the light of day.
