CRAFT & DESIGN EMPOWERMENT Summer 2015, thousands stranded at Europe’s borders on a search for a safe refuge. After the arrival in Germany the application for asylum needs almost one year. One year of waiting to start a new life. While waiting for residence and learning a new language the co-creating workshops can give orientation and hold.
Using the power of crafts, working with your own hands and creating something has a soul healing effect on human being. Beside the training of skills in the workshop, the collaboration has a huge impact on the capability of teamwork and the chance of knowledge transfer. Beside all, craft functions as language and supports a non-verbal communication to cross diverse culture and languages.
The empowerment of the individual is the basis of a participating society. A chain is only as strong as its weekest link. We need to support those who are in need of support to arrive. This project was part of WHAT DESIGN CAN DO #RefugeeChallenge https://vimeo.com/167475897 Fotographer: Dennis Arnold

SONDER Urban camouflage suit - coat out of geometric vintage fabric One planet for seven billion humans. Cities rising faster and faster. Vertical cities shoot up out of nowhere. Tower blocks everywhere you look. Welcome to the concrete desert. Gigantic architecture that swallows up human being. The individual overlooked in the mass. Surrounded by thousands of souls to lose yourself. Be someone and become nobody. Get lost in the city. Invisible in the mass, but always watched by someone. The illusion of being unseen while being observed. Being seen and not seen. Collective loneliness. Studio photos: Emily Daniel
