El Diablo de Conjugacíon: El Subjuntivo (Parte 1)
Tumblr media
The subjunctive (el subjuntivo) is one of the three moods in Spanish, the other two being the indicative (regular speak) and the imperative (commands).
It is also a pain in every Spanish students ass when they get to it…
So… I’m going to try and make it easier for all you young whippersnappers witnessing a brand new hell.
How do we know when to use it?
Well, funny you say that because you already do. The subjunctive is similarly used in English and is the “that” in most sentences like “I hope that” or “It’s important that.” The only thing is that English (as you may already know) does not conjugate for it in the same way that Spanish does.
To Hispanohablantes, the subjunctive is used to express desires, doubts, the unknown, the abstract, and emotions, which is unanimously understood as
WEIRDO:
W - Wishes
E - Emotions
I - Impersonal Expressions
R - Request/Recommendations
D - Doubt/Denial
O - Ojalá or “I hope”
Each letter explains a separate domain that the subjunctive covers. Generally, it is used to emphasize feelings towards things out of a person’s control (Wishes, Emotions, and Ojalá) like “I wish that” or “I hope that” or “I prefer that”  But sometimes, it can also be used to deal with ideas of uncertainty (Doubt/Denial) like “I doubt” Or “there’s no way.”
FYI: You CANNOT use subjunctive on yourself because well, we’re going to assume you have control over yourself.
Well, that covers W, E, D, and even O. What about R and I?
Well, it’s simple:
Requests and recommendations are simply that: requests and recommendations. They are your simple “I recommend that” or your more regally, “I insist that.”
And impersonal expressions are those times that you take yourself out of the equation, using phrases like “It is important that” and my favorite “It is necessary that.”
Broken down even further, each of these domains have words called triggers. These are words that spanish students all over the world, especially in America, memorise to know when to use the subjunctive.
I’ll be back with how to form the subjunctive next week but for now just take in all the “triggers” that can set up your new favourite mood below!🥰

La Leche
Castellano Spanish has a very weird thing with milk... here are some examples...
Tumblr media
A toda leche – at full milk
This essentially means ‘to the max’. So ‘ir a toda leche’ means ‘to go really fast’, ‘trabajar a toda leche’ means ‘to work flat out’ and ‘hacer los deberes a toda leche’ means ‘to do your homework at top speed’.
La leche de – the milk of
This means a lot of something. So ‘saber la leche’ about a given subject means to know a lot about it, while to be ‘la leche de listo’ means to be very clever, and ‘hace una leche de calor’ means that it’s extremely hot.
Mala leche – bad milk
On its own, mala leche can mean bad luck. So ‘¡Qué mala leche tiene!’ Can mean ‘What bad luck he has’.
Tener mala leche – to have bad milk
This means to be in a bad mood, or to be bad tempered. This Spanish meaning harks from the days when people believed that babies inherited personality traits through breast milk, which is why wet nurses were carefully selected in order not to pass bad milk on to babies.
Hay mala leche – there is bad milk
In this sense, mala leche means bad blood or ill feeling. So ‘hay mucha mala leche entre él y su hermano’ means ‘there is a lot of bad feeling between him and his brother’.
Ser la leche – to be the milk
Generally, this saying means “the shit.” So if a new phone is ‘la leche’, it is very good.
A mala leche/con mala leche – with bad milk
An action undertaken ‘with bad milk’ means it was done with bad intentions from the beginning.
Darse una leche – to give oneself a milk
When reflexive, this expression means to hurt oneself accidentally by bumping or crashing into something. For example, ‘Andrea resbaló por la calle y se dio una leche’ means that Andrea slipped and fell on the street, but ‘Andrea se dio una leche con el coche’ means she had a crash in her car.
Cagarse en la leche – to s-t in the milk
The expression is used to express anger and frustration.
Qué leches? – what milks?
An expression of surprise, that could be translated as ‘what on earth?’
¡Leches! – milks!
This exclamation can mean anything from shock, wonder or surprise to annoyance, and listeners are expected to understand depending on the situation.
Toda esa leche – all that milk
This phrase has a vague meaning, which can be roughly translated as ‘all that stuff’, ‘all that jazz’, or ‘all that kind of thing’, as in ‘tengo que comprar pan, agua y toda esa leche’ (‘I have to buy bread, water and all that kind of thing’).

Some Spanish Idioms
1. “Yo que tu”
Tumblr media
- Used as “If I were you...” In Spanish, it is generally continued with a sentence in the Tu form, explaining what they’d do if they were you.
2. “enrollarse (con alguien)”
- It is normally understood as “rolling” with someone, which is just doing the sexy sexy with someone.
3. “Cojonudo | Cojonudo!”
- both an adjective and an exclamatory, the word is really flexible. As an adjective, it means “hell of a” like in “ un cojonudo paseo.” As an exclamatory, it means “awesome” or “wonderful.”
4. “Tomar el pelo”
- Simply, “to kid.” Literally, “to pull hair.”
And finally...
5. “No me pises el terreno”
-Means “don't take my thing.” Literally, “don’t step on my ground.”

Filler words in Norwegian
Can’t learn a language without fillers!
altså - “well…” or “so…” It’s often used to enhance confidence, whether it’s strong or weak. Altså, mamma sa at jeg får lov til å gjøre det.. / Well, mum said I’m allowed to do it..
vel - “well”, can be used in the same way as in English. You can also combine it with altså: Vel, altså, her er planen… / Well, so, here is the plan…
liksom - the Norwegian equivalent to “like” - use it everywhere! It can also be used to enhance sarcasm. Har du liksom tenkt å gå med det der? / Are you seriously like, going to wear that thing?
da - this literally means then, but we often use it to end sentences, especially if we’re saying something that another person might want to argue with. And since it means ‘then’, you can also use it in the same way as in English. Jeg skulle jo liksom bare prøve den på, da. / I was just going to like, try it on.
ehh / øhh - uhh, uhm. Super useful.
på en måte - “in a way” or “kind of”.  Han er litt merkelig, på en måte. / He’s a little strange, kind of.
bare - “just” Jeg skal bare innom butikken. / I’m just gonna pop by the store.
ikke sant? - translates to “not true”, but is used for saying “right?” “don’t you agree?”. Around Bergen, people usually drop the “ikke” and just say “sant”. I’m from Bergen so I didn’t know that not everyone says this until I googled it lol.
skjønner du / skjø’ - used at the end of sentences in the same way as “you see” in English. It comes from the word “å skjønne”, which means to understand, to realize or to “get it”. “Skjø’” is not really used in the southern regions, but if you’re around Trøndelag, you’ll hear this a lot. In other regions one would say “skjønner du”. Han er lærer, skjø’/skjønner du. / He is a teacher, you see.
Feel free to ask me questions about these or request more specific fillers!

Norwegian Conjugation Pt 1
This is my first real post haha so hello but more importantly,
Tumblr media
This language is so out of whack sometimes oh my gosh!! but I love it so muchhhhh~
So first of all, there’s the easy stuff... Norwegian follows a simple conjugation structure, one similar to english (because both languages are germanic in origin), where words do not submit to the persons that they are binded to but only to the tenses they believe in! (translation: they don’t conjugate for person, only tense).
Here’s some examples:
Tumblr media
As you can imagine, there was a surge of happiness and contentment knowing that I didn’t have to go over almost a hundred conjugational endings for every verb known to man and then some (spanish flashbacks, sorry).
that was until I learned that Norwegian and English were more alike than I had hoped for. y’see, Norwegian, like English has its irregulars, only... it does it better. or worse? I can’t really tell how i should weigh that (probably worse).
Norwegian’s simple verb conjugation system is actually a little more complicated than it seems (but you already knew that). I’m going to try and explain this by tense.
Firstly, there are 16 “tenses” but I can easily chop that down to 3 for right now.
Tumblr media
Don’t worry about the modal or perfect tenses right now. You already naturally use them the same way in your native language and can cross this bridge a wee bit later. Same goes for the conditional. (if not, i’m sorry but you’re gonna have to do some extra studying).
Next, the infinitive is just the book definition of the verb or the “to (something)” in any language. for example: to do, to eat, to cook.
Also, I barely understand the passive tense in English so I surely couldn’t explain it in Norwegian haha.
And lastly, you don’t need to know the imperative right now, hun.
✨ That leaves us with: Present, Simple Past, Future, and the magnificent Imperative. ✨
Tumblr media
PRESENT:
For the present, you can just slap on an r at the end and generally be fine.
SIMPLE PAST:
The simple past is a little special, but it’s still simple nonetheless. decide wether the verb is strong (irregular) or weak (regular), and if it is weak, decide which weak group it belongs to. we’ll assess these backwards for clarity:
Tumblr media
If it’s “Weak,” then you have yourself a regular verb and have to then assess what weak verb group it belongs to:
Once you do that, you can easily follow through with the stable conjugational flow and get through life pretty easily.
Tumblr media
Your issue is when you arrive upon a “Strong” verb. These verbs are all irregular in the simple past and most of the time, this even extends to other tenses. They are the big bads who you must memorise and maintain in that big, beautiful brain of yours. But here’s a cute list for starters.
FUTURE:
Tumblr media
For the future, you can be a little stylised with your answer. Im Norwegian, there are 3 phrases that are said before the infinitive of the verb and are all understood as the future tense but they have slightly different meanings:
“kommer til å” - going to
“vil” - will
“skal” - will
- The difference between “vil” and “skal” is that “vil” also means “wants to” and generally has a connotation of doing what someone wants to do (in the future). “Skal” has almost the opposite connotation and explains that something will or won’t happen even if someone doesn’t want it to.
