Artist’s Statement
This film encapsulates the message of self-acceptance and self love. Being aware of one’s self and all the colours, quirks and vibrancies one may possess is extremely important to being aware of who you are. This film has 4 primary characters, ranging from ‘Plain-Jane’ simply in black and white, to an almost fantasy-like character with raging blue hair and vibrant, eclectic makeup. These represents different points in the scale of one’s individuality – though someone may appear plain and otherwise simple, the more vibrant/goddess figure can be awoken and part of the concious omnipresently.
As the film develops, these four characters phase in and out, along with the phrases:
- “It is what it is”
- “I am who I am”
- “Be at your most colourful”
These all work together to effectively communicate the message that circumstance is circumstance, though self is most important and the colour and energy one gives out into the world is the only real thing that matters. Even if this is deep inside you and not openly visible, it shows there is more to everyone than you think and you should not judge a book by its cover.
Though the animation and frame changes of this film are simple and fairly amatueur, I am happy with this piece as a first shot at AfterEffects and illustration – a very good learning curve and I have thoroughly enjoyed trying to convey this message of self.

I’m finding it really interesting to do this project and see the amount of effort that goes into animation. Understandably experts and even people with a bit more experience than me must operate AfterEffects second-naturedly but for me it is very much a experiment and trial run at ‘animation’. My video is not properly animated, more so just has queued movements and actions, with words to intersect these changes. Nevertheless, I am happy with this first project using AfterEffects and am excited to receive feedback and see what my peers have done :)

With two days till the deadline I need to commence creation of my final 15 second composition.
I have been watching simple animations such as Peppa Pig and stop motion things such as Wallace & Gromit for an insight into what audio, effects and shots are used to grab the audiences eye and make the footage appealing. Though I will be unable to execute to these levels of animation I hope to convey a similar cartoon like style without the childish naivety and to be able to show expression and feeling visually through my production.

Once our photos were taken we uploaded them to the computer create the stopmotion using after affects, We were able to create lines of everyone coming together from different locations on the map to represent the different places we live but are able to come together as one at the Te Aro campus where we can put our minds together and collaborating achieve greatness.

After the creation of our story board we printed out the map that we would photograph in the upstairs workspace. We were able to take all of the pictures that we needed to create our stop motion.

We created a rough idea of the storyboard. Our stop motion film is about coming together at Uni, finding each other and express our creativity, in a hub of learning where everyone has similiar goals, we can all relate and help each other to design and create as one another pushes us to be our best versions of ourselves. We decided to express this with the use of a map and using lines from different spots of the map to join at the Uni as we all come together.

Values
Peer opinion - Ruby
Akoranga... Sharing learning within the community and surroundings around you
Whanaungataunga... Teamwork and the relationships formed over mutual interest and common values
Whai Matauranga... Open-mindedness and a yearning to learn both old and new
Kaitiakitanga... Guardianship and protection of knowledge and learning processes guided by the technique and method of communication and sharing of ideas
Manaakitanga... Increasing ones mana through the processes of learning and ability to have success
Rangatiratanga... Exerting leadership or experience over those you create with, using this hierarchy to encourage further design and individuality...
50-100 words about a value I resonate most with... The value I identify most with is kaitiakitanga... The guardianship and continuity within ideas and design conventions among a cohort or community is most crucial to the development and evolution of design and creativity. Sharing of ideas and a protectionist view to the conventions as well as processes used in modern design are crucial to keep art ever changing and relevant to societal groups. I like this value since it also holds alot of social values - meaning the collaboration and sharing of knowledge is crucial. This also overlaps with other values such as whai matauranga.
